If your party members are inexperienced in a particular encounter or just simply overwhelmed by it, which class will you pick to save the day? Definitely the answer will depend on individual skill levels, the specific fight in question and familiarity / experience with the class, I am simply curious as to what people think and how do they play?

Sadly I believe rangers/necros/engis/thieves aren’t going to be anybody’s answer. Personally I feel that as high the Warrior’s DPS is, it cant carry a party in general. It may be just that I don’t have the skill or the experience to play warrior at its most effective.

I carry party’s all the time on my “high dps war” sometimes with 2/3 guards standing in back with a staff waving away so your wrong in that aspect. But the obvious answer to your question is a guard, with the right build you can dish out some nice dmg while going full leroy on everything, when i join a group that obviously sucks and is super squishy i reroll guard.

Edit: and by obviously sucks i mean multi tripple digit or low quad digit nerd points

I personally think thieves can save parties completely downed (happened to me a few times) but this is counterbalanced they get downed v easily themselves unless the player is skilled. People generally have a bad opinion of thieves being glass cannons and the many players playing thief really badly in PVE. I would have said the same thing about eles a month ago, but it seems that people playing elementalists have upped their game, at least in my experience.

As a Ranger, (yes ranger, contrary to what you believe) I’ve had to fight lupi numerous times by myself while my team would wipe out and come back from the wp (before the removal of wp’s during combat), for however long they needed to come back.

If I were to list all my moments I’d ‘save the day’ as a ranger, it’d only seem like I’m trying to feed my ego. There’s good players and bad players in every class. I guess maybe more in some than others.

a profession that does good damage, support, and manages to stay alive while everyone else goes down (skill-based mostly).

Guardians and eles in my opinion. (maybe warriors). all the other classes either provide little group utility, or rely on others too much.

Sadly I believe rangers/necros/engis/thieves aren’t going to be anybody’s answer.

Imo, its really the player that makes and breaks the encounter. How many people swap utilities and weapons between fights ?
As a ranger you can use entangle to keep enemies away from downed people, use search and rescue to let your pet rezz allies, support with healing spring, use signet of renewal for aoe condition removal. Use axe offhand #5 to block projectiles (like the small spiders ones in ac), stun enemies before their initial attacks with shortbow #5 ( extremely underused on breeders in ac), stun and knowkdown from gs. Longbow #4 for knockback. Ice and spike trap to slow enemies pursuing your skipping group or a player running because hes low on health. Elite spirit for rezzing players (yes even that one can save lives). Wolf pet for aoe fear.

Necros: Fear to keep enemies from downed people, drop well of darkness on downed players to blind enemies while rezzing, spectral grasp to pull enemies from downed players away, well of power in condition heavy places, plague signet as well. Signet of Undeath to rezz 3 downed people. Well of blood for healing. Elite skill plague form for aoe blind.

Engis can use projectile reflection with shield, glue shot to keep melee from reaching downed players with pistols or net shot with rifle, rifle knockback/throw mines or netshot turret. Provide burst healing with healing turrets aoe blast, or use medkit (throwable when traited). Healing field from elixir gun. Toolkit magnet for pulling enemies from downed payers, slick shoes for knockdown. Throw elixir r for reviving allies, smoke bomb to make enemies unable to hit downed, big old bomb for blowout. Elixir s for a 3 sec invincibility rezz. Provide stun and healing as well as immobilize with your elite supply drop.

Thieves are extremely useful for stealth rezzing (blinding powder, shadow refuge) or blind rezzing against melee with black powder, stun from pistol #4 i use all the time in ac to interrupt breeders, it also works on any channeled ability, even the deadeyes/inquest permastunner in arah iirc. Scorpionwire to pull enemies, tripwire for knockdown, needle trap and devourer venom for immobilize, smoke screen for projectile blocking or aoe stealth with shortbow 2. If you time it right you can lock down an enemy for 2 sec, wait 1 sec and stun him again with swords tactical strike to allow others to rezz someone downed. Projectile reflection with dancing daggers, locking down enemies with basilisk venom.

All this is mostly stuff you dont even need to trait for. No you can not use all of this tools at the same time. You need to think ahead. I swap my weapons and utilities according to the encounter that lies ahead and the quality of the group i am running with.

tl;dr The profession played by a player playing cleverly can carry the group. You got the tools to carry a group on any class

Tbh i didnt bother mentioning ele cause their advantages seemed obvious to me and i was more concentating on showing why the classes OP mentioned are also able to carry groups. As someone who plays ele a lot in dungeons i agree with you. No need for sad faces :-)

we have lots of support and if u play tome of courage right your party never wipes, plus we dont do huge dps but sustained dmg… so it might get a little longer if u dont have a burst dps warrior in the party, but theres fewer wipes and resets.

Guardian for sure. Because you can hold agro and relieve alot of pressure from bad players and you have alot of survivability skills for the group.

I’ve carried on my guardian/warrior/mesmer/ele plenty of times but nowhere near how hard I’ve carried with guardian. Guardian just has so much control in a fight while being very bruiser-like. Every class can carry, other classes just carry harder. All depends on the player.

Hardly. I play as I normally do (S/D + SB) and I find myself being downed the least, or usually not at all while mostly in melee, and only having to stop to pick up other people with stealth. There are also multiple parts of the game where a Thief can just run it solo and save the group a whole lot of trouble eg. destroying all the golem parts in CM path 1, planting all the bombs in the Dredge Fractal, Refuging the group past pointless trash mobs etc.

Admittedly, running D/D ele also feels similiar, without the stealth part. Cantrip ressing in place of stealth isn’t quite as effective, but it works. I probably don’t need to go in to detail about why a D/D ele is effective in general, but yeah.

Those are the only 2 80s I have, and my Warrior is currently at 45-ish. I can’t comment on anything else, but that’s my personal experience with those two. I don’t want to sound overconfident, but professions don’t seem to matter as much as the person playing them. I’ve seen many, many terrible Thieves, but I’ve also seen some very good ones. Same with most other professions.

If my PUG is doing poorly, I try to explain what’s going on and what they should be doing. It doesn’t matter what profession I am. That’s how I ‘carry’ my group… by making them better.

That’s not carrying, thats called “leading”. Carrying refers to deadweight teammates. Leading ofc is better than carrying, but you can’t lead a group of people that just doesn’t want to learn or get better, hence resorting to carrying / adjusting to make it through encounters.

I give them plenty of leech, root and stone their enemies in place, and the refuge will still heal, and give them even more leech if they are projectile users. sounds pretty good to me.

Guardian gets my vote easily. A high dps warrior can make things nicer just depends how glass cannon he’s setup as to whether or not he can keep from dying. Mesmer brings many good things, some of which are appreciated and some which aren’t so apparent.

Generally thinking of all pve content I keep coming down to a Lupicus test. Try Lupicis with a good guardian tanking him and see how painless it is. Then try it with a group with a mix of any other class. The fight becomes considerably harder. It becomes more of a “who can survive Lupicus running wild” kind of event. Anyways thats my 2 cents.

And no, epic DPS is not needed as the guardian did it.

If by “carrying” you mean “keeping everyone else alive even if they screw up”, then no class can do that.

If you mean “soloing the bosses even after the others die”, then nearly every class can do (some) bosses, if the player in question knows the encounter well.

IMO the only class that really stands out (negatively) is ranger; they have by far the least defensive / support abilities (which doesn’t mean they can’t solo enemies – or duo them, if you count the pet).

I find guardian to be the best at this and is why I made it my main. I go for the highest toughness to get all the aggro since I can handle it. Even if it is a good group I do this and the rest can focus on dps.

Guardian is the easiest and best to keep the party up and alive for this. They have focus 5, retreat, virtue of courage, and sheild on revive trait to revive safetly. I’ve had plenty of times where I’m the only one alive and I have to kite him at phase 2 and revive the party at the same time but it’s not too bad. It’s the best to help a group learn the fight with since they will be up more to experience it. Timewise I’d say warrior though. Wethospu would have lupi beat by the time we get everyone up though probably….

Im working on my 7th 80 and I can say for sure: ALL PROFESSIONS

All classes can carry a group if they are well played, and I will tell you the reason, you carry your group if you know what you are doing and how to aproach the dungeon figths.

A guardian can heal and keep alive the party.
the warrior dps can make the difference just by killing fast
the elementalist can even solo some parts of dungeons.
the necromancer will keep you always without conditions
the enginereer can surprise you with hundreds of tricks
the ranger is the best rezzer in the game, put double rez with the pet, use the spirit to instant rez people
the thief can stealth the whole party to skip hard trash, and they rez very well, they can also pull a single mob to kill him alone
the mesmer can be awesome in expert hands, they can negate almost all dmg on the party if they are well used.

In a few words: If you say a class is less than other, you need learn to play.
