When do I do my first dungeon? I know AC is level 35, but can I do it a bit later? Also, what is the difference between challenge and story mode, level wise?

You can do your first dungeon anytime. Try the new molten facility or do fractals.

The difference between story and explorer mode is 5 levels.

As lame as it sounds I really suggest getting to level 80 first, especially if you plan to play with random people.
First time is usually very harsh so you want to prepare as well as possible.

It’s better if someone can carry you. Not saying impossible, but I’ve done AC/fotm in low level and mobs really hurt, even with green gears. I’d say, do it after lvl55 for a much smoother run.

And the level thing is just recommendation I think. You can join any dungeon if someone in your party start it.

Level 30 minimum for Ascalonian Catacombs story-mode, level 35 for Explorable mode.

Story mode should be very do-able at level 30 in a somewhat decent team, but make sure to have your gear up to date (level 25+ greens).
Explorable at level 35… let’s just say, won’t be a pretty experience, especially not if it’s going to be your first time…

Can I do story mode at level 80 then? Is the dungeon story not needed to bolster my personal story? Because I am alright waiting till 80 and doing all dungeons then.

Of course. It’s up to you to decide when to do it.
