Which professions do you like on...
5 warriors are all you need.
If I’m not looking for a speedrun, I’m fine with anyone, I think each class brings it’s own contributions to a run.
With the exception of Rangers, though. Each run I ran with a Ranger they were just so terribly underwhelming. At first I thought it could be their build, but I found it hard to believe I would get these so many times in a row. I hate to discriminate against classes, but I always roll my eyes when a ranger joins a group. Can’t see what they bring into the party that someone else can’t, correct me if I’m wrong on this one.
Played well:
- mesmer
- warrior
- engineer
- guardian
- ranger
- necro
- thief
Played poorly:
- warrior
- guardian

you should know why unless this is your first MMO. pet classes lend to the worst play. you have to do the least learning in order to get by with them, so most do not learn their class at all by the time they hop into group content.
The profession I like most is the player that plays well.
The profession I dislike is the player that, well, doesn’t play well.

I don’t think that’s really the case with rangers since the highest dps builds with ranger are really just built on them using auto-attach for the most part anyway.
But to respond to the OP, for an ideal group, I would probably do this:
1) Guardian – Role: Anchor/tank/defensive support
2) Engineer – Condition damage and vulnerability stacking
3) Mesmer – Defensive and offensive support
4) 2x Warrior – Pure dps and might stacking
My perspective on the professions in terms of their dungeon usefulness is this:
Warriors – are so far ahead of any other class in terms of dps, that it’s hard not to take them.
Guardians – are great at bringing tons of defensive utility while still being able to output solid dps. They are also handy to have since they can easily stack a lot of armor to increase the chance that they get aggro.
Engineers – are my favorite class for condition damage dealers since they can stack so much vulnerability.
Necros – are also a decent condition class for when an eng isn’t available.
Elementalists – have a lot of heal-centric utility, but personally I think that damage prevention utility (protection, projectile reflection, etc.) is much more useful than healing in dungeons. However, they are still strong condition damage dealers.
Mesmers – are a staple of any good group for Time Warp alone, but their projectile reflecting and ability to group enemies for cleaving with focus pulling make them indispensable.
Rangers – are pretty much mediocre at best at anything they attempt. I have no problem taking a ranger in my group since they can get through anything just fine (when played right, of course), but I take rangers despite the fact that they play ranger, not because they play ranger.
OMGSOHAPPYIGOTONE tier:
-Guardian ( So happy i made one, guardians truly are the bread&butter of non-speedrun hard content )
-Mesmer (good damage, utility, and the most OP 2 skills in the whole game)
-Warrior (if running the correct setup, hate zerkers in mixed grioups or tanks in my speedruns. Not really much of skill needed to be worth the tier, but they must know how to setup for the run)
GOODBUTNOTBEST tier:
-Eles
-Necros when specced condition dmg with contagion ( or whatever is called the one thing spreading conditions )
SRYWAITINGFORGUILDIE tier:
-Ranger (and yes, i do have one myself with 500+hours. Damage is just “ok” but they lack any useful support or defense/utility to justify the damage and the incovenience of the pet. Also, most pug rangers just afk LB 1, which makes a poorly balanced class perform even worse)
-Engi (mostly because i have no clue what they do, most of them drop turrets or other useless stuff and run around spamming nades & flamethrower, maybe a well played one is better)
-GREATIFFRIEND,NEVERPUG:
-Thief ( they have great damage and stealth is very useful for ninjarez, good utility with permablind, cluster bomb spam etc….the problem is, pug ones seem to DIE too much to be effective. Ele-tier if played by someone who knows what hes doing, <ranger tier by the random pug in greens )

I like having guardians and eles on my team, but I’m generally okay with everything
Not so gone on another ranger (my main) or warriors (nearly all the people on my block list are warriors from pugs)
mez and guard all day every day.
more/any melee less ranged glass cannons. It’s what my guard build favors anyway. Not counting pets :P
I love me a well placed time warp anytime of the day. :P
Scrub Logic.

Even when I’m on my ranger I kick rangers. They sit in the back with their bear pet and spam SB 1, god knows what gear they are in.
If you run full glass, piercing arrows, quickness on pet swap, sb/lb you can reach an acceptable level of dps imo. When lining up you can do between 7k to 15k rapid fire shots (total around 60k+?) which you pair with quickness for a decent AOE spike, get a barrage in there and then back to shortbow to maintain dps till quickness is back up. You can also do some aoe vaulnerability 10 to 15 stacks with openning shots and hunter’s shot. <- how easily this can be done really depends on your ability to line up targets and the group’s ability to keep mobs together.
Only real group utility is aoe CC ( entangle/ muddy terrain), Healing spring with a blast finisher pet (drake).
(which most pugs don’t even know exists it seems).
Pet res debatable.
Warhorn –
1 stack of might is laughable.
1 stack of fury- a warrior can do this.
1 stack of swiftness- nice for running through trash.
This means that another class is usually better as it will be able to keep up DPS and actually have some more useful utility eg. mesmer with timewarp or warrior with for great justice/banners/shouts and etc. However. If you have a mes, warrior, guard whatever, and you have those utilities covered, it sure is nice to have an aoe CC for things like charr fractal warriors and shaman adds while still keeping up some acceptable damage.
In other words- rangers are not needed. But they can become acceptable when played correctly. Just acceptable.
