Why not give raids a PvP-style gear select?
Because raids are PvE.
PvE is all about the economy of getting gear, or getting multiple sets of gear, or getting legendaries.
If you didn’t need gear at all for PvE, you completely undermine the basic economy of PvE.
The easiest fix for everyone whining is for them to stop whining and recognize that raids are content designed to be literally the last thing you do, when you’re at the pinnacle of a PvE build’s power and have money to burn on extra gear sets.
Also, people could just go do vale guardian in exotics and get all their ascended easily that way for free.

It would also de-value the rewards received from the raids. Ascended equipment is of little value in the open world but plays a much bigger role in the raids (I’m thinking more about ascended weapons here as we know groups have been downing bosses in exotic gear). The best rewards from the raids right now are ascended armors and weapons, but if those stats completely did not matter in raids, the rewards for completing the content would be meaningless.
The point is not to let anybody tome a character up to 80, run into the raid in full greens, and down all the bosses. Like PopeUrban said, raids are the definition of end-game so the time required to get there should be longer.

This is true. However, GW had an economy that included the sale of materials to make luxury/prestige armor skins. I agree that it was/is essential for mats to retain value. That does not mean, however, that it is necessary to have that value be provided by stat boosts — however large or small they might be.
Some people prefer the stats approach, some the cosmetic. One thing is sure, though. Those who made the stuff and who are using lack of it to filter out players who are less likely to have the same values they do are among those who like the stat approach. It takes commitment to make multiple sets of Asc. gear, and that’s the type of commitment the exclusionary players want.
