unfortunately theyre all over the place, (this should probably go in the player fails thread) even in dungeons, had a pug ranger join for coe final boss and i swear he stacked with us while using kudzu the whole time

lol, happened to me yesterday in a cof run… this guy was attacking CoF1 final boss from a close distance (right out of the big red circle, could be somewhere around 600 range?) with a long bow…

I mean, how clueless do you have to be about your own character!?

On a side, tiny note, I was pretty prejudge-mental about bowbears myself till I leveled my ranger and equip it full full zerk gear and traits… if the ranger can keep it at 1500 range, the LB hits for 3-4K each hit :S it’s not that ugly for random content actually… but at closer range it makes you wanna kill yourself with a spoon. Sword > LB anyway.

I agree with trying to CQC the Longbow by purposefully hitting the mid-range bonus instead of going all the way out to hit the long-range bonus. But only when you’ve got to stay within range to hit people with Spotter and there’s some delicious buffs going on that you’d otherwise be missing.

Double-bow rangers normally don’t use spotter, they prefer to pick the traits that give 1500 longbow range and piercing arrows.

….well, I guess I can’t argue with that.

I used to run longbow ranger for pugging CoF 1 back when we had character based token rewards.

Just stand at 1500 range, stack whatever might I could with rampage, keep frost spirit to myself.

Solo whole acolyte event without getting agro.

Pugs must think “Oh here! Another condition damage bearbow ranger like me that isn’t a filthy elitist and plays how he wants! Let’s join!” and then proceed to join with their crappy rangers/flamethrower engineers/whatever and ruin the run (and the fun).

OOh i saw one the other. At first i looked at it and said…what a unique and odd creature maybe i should inspect it further. However, it increasingly became annoying. Somehow in the most serious of dungeons before the most dangerous of monsters, the wild and ignorant creature attracted the undead and subsequently killed the small group of adventurers we had. There was even a champion warrior which ran after us after having seen the peculiar creatures cuddly pet….

And actually most pug ranger use bow and bear so that’s why people hate ranger in dungeon.

A few days ago in HotW 1 there was a bearbow who just refused to accept Ginva’s reflection as a fact of life. Butcher starts spinning, he doubled down with rapid fire shot.

Bearbow: “Arrows flying back in your face just mean you need to shoot them faster.”

Genuine question, how does Greatsword damage fair against Shortbow? Cause I mean… Dat Shortbow shoots pretty quick, and that Greatsword is pretty awful…

Ugh I think shortbow does more damage, ironically… that was before the greatword buff; I don’t think it changed much though.
Greatsword: the sword of ladies and kittens. Hah. Rooting autoattack for men only.

As a player with 4 characters, none of which is a ranger, I have to ask: What is so bad about a ranger using the bow and a bear as a pet?

You’ve never played with such a player, have you?
I’ll answer with more questions: what is bad about ranging at a medium-far range where your buffs (if you have any) don’t influence your party (because mind you, to do decent damage, the LB needs a lot of range)? What is bad about doing incredibly bad dps for no apparent reason other than, maybe, the so-called “playstyle” and so forcing your team to carry the burden? What’s wrong about using your skills randomly and pushing back foes away from melee players? What’s wrong about not calling back your pet thus messing up all the aggros? What’s wrong about kiting melee foes around, forcing your team to run after it?
And let me tell you before you start staying: “But that is just a bad player, a ranger with a bow and a bear is only that, a ranger with a bow and a bear, can’t measure skill blablabla”, let me tell you this: having a bear and a bow in situations where it’s not even REMOTELY NEEDED (see: Alpha) to be safe/tanky (I could accept that at, say, a couple of fractals), or actually having it at all, is already a sign or either an oblivious, bad player with no skill, or a decent player that decides to kitten himself and his own team for the sake of being a special kid.

Ah the bear has a tank characteristic, right. that explains a lot. Guess that I’ve been lucky in my 1+ year of playing this game since launch because I don’t recall ever having had the “pleasure” of teaming up with such a player. And I’ve done loads of dungeons, all of them

Oh you lucky fellow… ranger players in this game are so bad it hurts.

Crazily enough I joined a HOTW p1 party recently, saw the ranger class icon and then said in the party chat “let me guess, a bearbow ranger”, he zones in to the instance and he’s sword/axe + feline pet.

That was … awesome. He even used whirling defense on the dude with frost magic while the guardian couldn’t put reflect up to save his life and the mesmer camped greatsword at the top of the stairs with the occasional phantasmal warden.

But yeah, it’s all those bearbow bads which tarnish the class so badly that we once didn’t even think the class itself was any good. If only people looked down on PvE hammer warriors, mace/shield cleric guards and water attunement staff camping eles as much as they do rangers, then people would be forced to get good or get kicked.

Indeed, a ranger played well is awesome because it’s also surprising can’t imagine the surprise I had myself while I realised I really enjoy playing it. Woah sword at times is a kitten challenge for me. Ai laik it.

@Colesy: Nothing wrong with a Warrior wielding a hammer. There’s plenty of PvE situations where that choice has its benefits.

Yes I do like Kholer fight. Not only it is a fun fight but it also expose bad players presuming to be good like no other. Best way to identify them.

Anyway, speaking for myself, I use a Drake and Longbow on my Ranger (second weapon set is either Axe/Axe or Greatsword, depending on the situation. Second pet is a Devourer for situations that call for range). I don’t really mind Bearbow Rangers, as long as they understand boss mechanics and don’t do silly things like stay at range when you need to melee, or knock back bosses when we need him to stay in one spot.

I went with a group of buddies and did a 5 man bearbow run of CoF P1 and arah P3 earlier today for the lulz. It… Actually went pretty smoothly. The CoF run took maybe 10 minutes, and the only hitch we encountered in arah was at lupi because 4 of us had never fought lupi before on a ranger. But after a couple of tries even that was done rather easily.

That being said though, we were an organized group of 5. Pugs will be pugs, and they really can’t be trusted with much of anything.
