to choose a main
Guard, engi, or mes give the most support. Thieves also are pretty good support tho most people dont think so. With the meta 25/30/0/0/15 Sw/P build you can have perma blind, and perma weakness from autoattack. You can also safely res anyone who goes down quickly via shadow refuge. And you’re awesome for skipping stuff
One class to rule them all
Anet should give us capes…
…
Ok let me ask again.
In pugs, should I pick class that brings vulnerabilty or might or banners or fury… Or capes…
Just pick warrior, self-sustainable, offensive buff, and able to solo Mai Trin.

Pick thief, perma dodges, one of the best self-heals, blind and weakness spam, a 60s cd revive skill and able to carry people through dredge. Hard to learn, but very rewarding. Downside: most pugs are running “heavies only”. So maybe just pick warrior?
I would say Guardian actually has the most demand on pug teams.
They always want cleric guardians though.
Guard, warrior, or thief are probably the most indispensable/useful. I main a mesmer and those are always appreciated as well.
Sadly, I don’t pug Guards in higher levels of fractals. I most welcome thief (for the skip and stealth) and then war, since they can carry themselves.

Am I hearing what I think I’m hearing. You forsake guards on your runs? If I ever run into you, I’ll be sure to remember this!

PuG gaurds.

Iris is good people. has brains. more than me at least.
The best class for a pug is a dps full zerker warrior.

The problem with guards is that they are harder to play than warriors, and namely in pugs.
You put “guard” and “hard to play” in the same sentence, your argument is invalid.

And what about engis? Are their dps too low to be on the list?
Pugs don’t understand engis.
The problem with PUG Guardians is that they usually have this notion that any build is good for dungeons (coughlookingatyoufulltimestaffguardianscough). The problem with PUG Groups is that they’re usually desperate to have guardians and they probably don’t know better.
Guardians can be a very valuable asset in a party. You just need to know what weapons to equip when, and what utilities to use when. You can’t just fulltime only 3 utilities and camp staff and keep your virtues on passive. You have to eke the most out of guardian because their potential utility is quite high.

I. Don’t. Pug. Guards
Don’t Pug Guards
Pug Guards
1. Level 19, a full berzerker guard knows what to do and the run was smoothly. Level 29, the same guard was re-invited. At Mossman, he proceeded to RANGE the boss from his own safe spot when everyone tried to convince him to melee and become helpful. His reason: ‘I don’t melee in a pug’. The jerk even had the gut to mock us who effectively carried him through Mossman and Urban Battleground by melee-ing almost all the things.
2. Level 49, a thief was pugged. He is so good that he puts a tear into my eyes. Such treasure that I cherish in my friend list. Well… not until Mai Trin, his friend who got invited, started to down more frequently than desired. The thief dude switched to a tanky guardian to actively on rez duty. I saw the sign but thought ‘whatever, Mai Trin is hard for squishy.’ Level 50, thief and mesmer were re-invited again. At Molten Duo, thief and mesmer were down. Thief told my guard: “Hey, why don’t you put down your scepter and stop DPS-ing to rez the downed people?”… Ugh?!! His reason: Guards are made of tanky materials and should be proactive in rezzing. And coming from his pronounced experience in PvP, that is the way the game SHOULD be played.
That said, we never know what the Pug thinks. They may be effectively in meta for a certain class and have a totally distorted view regarding Guardians. I don’t pug guards because I have one or two friends whom I trust enough to play a guard. If you want to play a guard in pug, start with lower levels of fractals and work yourself into others’ friend list.

Engi’s are never needed in PvE. Why? Because their big thing is capping vuln, and that’s no longer needed. Why? Because Anet broke Sundering Strikes, so it no longer has an internal cooldown. Thief with Sundering Strikes + Improvisation + FGS + multiple teleports = win (and multiple applications of instant 25 vuln).

kitten Iris, you’re vicious today. I like that.
I’ll complete the story for you.
That guardian was promptly expelled at the third fractal, and I was called in to replace him. I brought an ele, everything went pretty smoothly because I’m not a ranging pug. The icing on the cake? I got an ascended weapon chest for 2 fractals’ worth of work.
“Memories are nice, but that’s all they are.”
Wait until after my morning coffee and I’ll be as meek as ever ;-)
Ele is good in any types of pug and pretty fun to play. Strongly recommended.

I second that! I’m a big fan of the Ele + Thief combo
Because every bad group posts “need guard!” like it’s a mandatory thing, especially in fractals. They develop a hero complex and they actually think they’re the reason everybody is alive while spamming wave of wrath in magi gear.
Also try to convince one of them to stop using empower when you’re trying to blast fire fields.

WAVE OF WRATH!
Maybe I pug too much, but I don’t find that there are a disproportionate number of bad guardians – it’s just that a guardian has a more complex and specific role then a lot of classes. I see just as many shortbow thieves, longbow rangers, flamethrower engis, greatsword mesmers, scepter/dagger no hammer eles, staff necros, and hammer warriors. I also find plenty of people running the meta who have way more skill and knowledge then me, and everything in between. People pretty much tune out bad rangers at this point, but a guardian can and should be the backbone of the team, and a bad one is a bigger disappointment.
I’m having trouble choosing a main too, yay! ^w^
I like dungeons and Ikea.
aka Cotscene.
Ty pals. Guess I will level an ele and see if I can handle him.
