10+ more trait points without level increase?
Tbh I don’t see them ever increasing the number of trait points unless they completely rework them and add new ones. Many builds will become OP and balancing this would be a complete nightmare. I can see them doing it alongside nerfing quite a few of the grandmaster traits, which is something I do not want to see
[OHai] – Northern Shiverpeaks
Honestly, I hope that they do not increase the trait points.
There are quite many builds in the game that would go way overpowered with 10 more traitpoints. Think Thieves with 0/30/30/20/0 or Warriors with 30/0/20/0/30.
Why would you do that?
“You can’t have more than 10 HS decks because that would confuse people”
“30 fps is more cinematic”
Why would you do that?
more traits points to distribute almost certainly confirms new and more traits (not just reworking current bad ones but brand new ones that will add up and give more options) for more build combinations. That would certainly make some major traits too powerful but they can always tone them down a little without ‘nerfing/killing’ them.
Why would you do that?
This.
This kind of question makes me think you don’t know the game at all. Do you know why we get 70 skill points instead of, say, 80? Because that limits you to, at most, 2 grandmaster traits and 1 adept, or 1 grandmaster and 2 master traits.
Traits are tiered because some traits are supposed to be more expensive than others.

read my post above, i stated that some may become too powerful when combined with other grandmaster traits. Also, we heard many rumors that anet may increase level cap in the future, do you seriously think by increasing level cap additional trait points won’t be given? What i asked is no level cap but just 10 free points you acquire in whatever way. And no i don’t know the game i bought it last week…
more traits points to distribute almost certainly confirms new and more traits
They’ve already said they’ll be adding more traits and skills in the next 6 months in that blog post.
If they did do this, they’d have to add an extra tier to traits. Much easier to chuck the less exciting traits out and somehow integrate them with skill use (using this skill when x condition is met achieves y effect) and introduce the new traits.

more tiers would be as awesome, don’t you people want more versatility? i sure do

Aww come on?
We ALL know that a game with a maximum of 90 levels and/or 80 trait points are extremely superior to a game with 80 levels and/or 70 trait points.
Who cares about ‘actual content’? +5 to power owns all that!
;-)
And no i don’t know the game i bought it last week…
A little thought experiment for you: Consider the implications of commenting on mechanics you, by your own admission, do not understand.
Oh so much YES!
But I think it´s a pretty safe bet that ANet will just rework the whole trait system.
They already promised new Elites and other traits as part of the coming “vertical-horizontal” character progression.
@Proxy thnx for the facepalm.

You can have versatility without expanding the number of slots and by proxy, stats.
Expanding the number of slots over and over would just lead to power creep. Adding more interesting traits, and integrating the boring ones into skill usage has dual benefits:
- Skills become more effective when you don’t just spam them.
- Interesting traits = more valid choices = more depth.

More trait points and more trait tiers is power creep. Screw that.
Additional traits, maybe even additional trait lines would be nice though.

By the way, they only release stupid content in which you don’t get to use your character skills ( your own words, mind you ) so why would people even care about more traits if they can’t even use them inside our wonderful minigames?

Wvw. They release stupid content that’s for sure and looking at latest threads talking about ‘mini’ everything im not the only one on this forum who thinks so. I’m sure with all the unhappy people they will finally start releasing content for those who enjoy playing their class instead of standing in LA collecting miniatures and showoff their legendary/titles, but that’s another story.

More tiers is power creep…something Anet has distinctly said they don’t want. In fact, a random 10 extra points in the existing structure could also be considered power creep.

Hyperbole and insults do little to bolster your point.

Welcome to gw2 forums, where insults bolster your point. If you don’t have a point, you insult insult and insult. It works for American politics so why not forum “politics”.
This is an mmo forum, if someone isn’t whining chances are the game is dead.

If anything, the casuals (when the term is used in a derogatory way) are the people who want power creep. There is absolutely no reason why power creep is a good thing.
All power creep does is ruin balance and invalidate what already exists. Sure, a causal like yourself won’t necessarily mind that, but the rest of us don’t want to see balance skewed even moreso than it already is.
There is plenty of ways to add new traits without simply adding power creep… since you seemed to be trying to imply that nothing can change, or be complex without power creep.

Just want more, more of what’s available so im not forced to run same couple of builds (most of the times there’s one or two builds that significantly outshines the rest so you stick to them) the passed 10 months and years to come. Adding a weapon on which you can’t even swap skills or a new utilty/elite skill isn’t enough to diversify from what’s available.

You’re still implying that power creep creates diversity, when the opposite it true. All power creep will do is change what the viable builds are, where adding more stuff without power creep will do just that, add more stuff that can compete alongside what already exists. Also, power creep is as I said, going to mess up balance even more.

I don’t see how adding other tiers would add diversity.
All it’d do is give you an additional trait to your current build.
Adding new viable traits, however, would add diversity.

more traits doesn’t necessarily mean a new tier, or more points to distribute, maybe they meant that there would more traits available to choose from

I don’t mind having more trait points added in PvE if there’s a level increase. For PvP/WvW, trait points can remain capped at 70 in order to preserve balance.

and adding new tiers with completely new traits wouldn’t? makes no sense.
They can add another toolbar while they’re at it so we can use all our class skills. It’s time to take the training wheels off, ladies and gentlemen. Lol!
I do not care about 10 additional trait points. All I want is Role Slots and/or the ability to respec my traits on go.
New Skill and Traits
We’ll begin regularly adding new skills and traits to the game for each profession to expand your characters and builds! You will be able to earn these new traits and skills by unlocking them. To go along with this, we’ll expand the content and options to earn skill points to help encourage players to experience different challenges and content throughout the world. These skills and traits will be designed to be balanced with the existing skills/traits we currently have in the game, and will simply compliment and expand the range of abilities and tactics available to each profession. Both WvW and PvE players can acquire skills and traits, and additional means of earning skill points will be addressed for both core content areas.
The regular addition of skills and traits that you can earn as you play provides us an extremely stable, easily expandable reward system that fits neatly into the pillars of progression and advancement that Guild Wars 2 are all about. Your character will be able to grow and change for years to come without invalidating everything you’ve earned so far.
After rereading that from the blog post, the devs didn’t really say they would be adding new tiers, by my understanding, they would be adding more traits(from the original 12 per trait line) to choose from.

I would absolutely love to be able to save builds, maybe even have the gear saved to the build to, so you can swamp out your multiple builds with a click of the button, rather than several seconds of retraiting changing your gear while everyone else in the party waits for you to change your cloths. It is especially a pain when you accidental forget some traits, or pieces of gear… or even get thrown into combat and have to fight with miss matched gear/trait.
I am sure that almost everyone else is in agreement 100% with this.
Well, it would of course be far superior to new gear tiers, but still a form of vertical progression, so I would have to say “no”. I’ve seen this form of progression work in the game I’m playing right now, and the only reason I’m able to bear it is because it’s a F2P game and all of the gear related info is not shown anywhere, so there’s no incentive for people to “prestige grind” to show off and brag.
If you had me choosing between a new gear tier or a higher gear level cap and more trait points, traits points would be the lesser evil. They’d still be an evil IMO, though.

and adding new tiers with completely new traits wouldn’t? makes no sense.
It would.
It’d also open a whole new lot of balancing that would need to be done to existing traits, especially in the Adept tier, and probably for the first few weeks / months, you’d essentially be using the exact same build you are, just with an additional Major Trait. Not to mention 6+ months down the line, you’ll be bored of using the same build, so you’ll more tiers, and the cycle continues.
It’s a lot easier to add, remove and revamp traits, which essentially gives you the same effect without a) power-creep, and b) balancing becoming a handful.

I do not want more trait points or new tiers. Given that Anet changes, adds or moves traits almost every patch I think it’s safe to say it’s likely they will include the new traits into the current system rather than expand upon it (or at least I hope so although experience has also taught us that logic and Anet’s balance changes are not always on speaking terms).
A dual build system would be nice though, even if it was just something like a portable skill retrainer with the same cost and the ability to save builds.
I’m not sure more trait points-increased level cap or not, is a good thing as all it will do is make some classes have the ‘can do all the things’ or ’it’s super effective!’ set-ups. That and I’m not particularly fond of the trait system-I find it dull and inflexible though functional so the less I have to deal with it the better (imo the ruby grid system of a certain f2p title developed by a Russian company is the best trait type system-not naming anything because it seems there’s a ‘infract me plz for things others get away with’ on my profile or something -_- but I digress).
Wasn’t it this game that said each profession would go through profession-specific challenges to gain access to some system to further modify their skills? That wasn’t a bad idea imo-that I’d actually like to see; yes you are more than your profession but it shouldn’t mean that your profession has NO impact. Elementalists get arcane training or do…elementalist…things at sources of power, rangers undergo pet bonding challenges or something, thieves get infiltration/stealth-steal challenges ala thieves’ guild in skyrim for example (if they ever change it from being a one button gimmick)-stuff like that to gain another resource to spend in another system to customize our characters. What about the orders? In terms of gameplay (and arguably story) they are utterly unexplored and underutilized. How about order specific challenges/missions with it’s own skill system?
I just remembered they did something similar in wvw where you have wvw skills now to customize your character-THAT’S cool (although I’m not a fan of wvw) and is far more fun than 10 more points to create god-mode toons only to be nerfed into oblivion after forum qq imo
The beginning of wisdom is to call things by their proper name.

Many =/= Everyone.

standard zerk with empower allies

+1
I’m all for additional traits and more lines. I don’t want more trait points though, we would have to go through another complete balance overhaul.

Or 30/20/0/0/30, for Forceful Greatsword, Heightened Focus and Berserker’s Power. Like good old days.
When I hear more traits and more skills all I can think of is the power creep that occurred in GW1. That game became nearly impossible for them to balance. I hope we don’t go down the same path in GW2.

Apparently this game is near impossible for them to balance. Almost every patch has a laundry list of rebalancing. It’s actually one of the worst I’ve seen about rebalancing classes or tweaking or whatever they try and call it.
I think Nuka Cola has a point. I don’t think adding more trait points is the way to accomplish it.
This game needs to have more build variety…particularly for certain professions. They’re done a pretty good job with say Guardians, because there are several good viable builds. Nuka wants more viable builds. I think Anet could accomplish this without raising trait points.
They would have to rework the least used traits into something useful though.
And of course it doesn’t help that some players are min/maxing and only want THE most efficient build. That play style certain comes with its own limitations.
