If / when ArenaNet decide to make legendary armors, what would be the best way to go about it?

Currently the problem with the Ascended Armors is that there are only 3 different kinds, so there is not much variety. Legendary Weapons are much more diverse because you got 15-20 to choose from. So even if many people are pursuing a Legendary, there is a bigger chance it will be more rare and feel more special because the choice is larger?

But armors are more complicated. Not only do you have to model every piece and make sure it fits the animation of the character, you also have to make sure it works for all five races, and both genders, meaning that making 1 armor has to be individually created for 10 different player models. Then you have to make sure the armor works with all other pieces of armors.
Unlesss of course… you forced people either to wear the entire legendary set or nothing?

But how would you go about it? Would you gender or race lock armors and make them themed to the different races? So Charr’s dont get the short shaft when once again a armor designed for humans will be comic relief once the charr gets it on?

Or would you go for class lock and make themes? Will Guardians get a unique Paragon-GW1 style armor, or will Elementalists get a Monk naked-tattoo type armor? Will Thiefs get an exclusive Ninja armor?

or would you simply have that their armors progression follows the same path. Just like with Ascended armor. One heavy set, one medium set and one light set, and just hope it won’t be too copy/pasted to see too many people running around in the same 3 legendary armors?

How important is it to be able to dye the legendary armors? the radiant and hellfire achievement reward armors are some of the most visual striking armors in the game, but can’t be dyed. If the Legendary Armors will be crazy and shoot rainbows and summon dragon minions from the chest area, it might be hard to make them dye-able. Is this important to you?

I think it’s hard to give feedback, because we don’t know how much time and work goes into making one armor set work for all races and characters. I think it would be cool if medium armor got some non-leathery trenchcoats. And if Charr got some armors that looked good with helmet on.

It might be unrealistic to hope they could make 15-20 different sets of legendary armors to keep diversity up. But they did it with the weapons. Is it that unlikely you think?

I hope they NEVER really start with something like Legendary armor, since really who beside some TP Tycoons will have maybe 12-15.000 Gold to spent for a set of armor ?

And that of course only for ONE set for one character.

I’d rather happily buy the next 20+ armorsets from the gemstore instead of seeing something so totally overpriced like legendary armor.

EVERY MMO is awesome until it is released then its unfinished. A month after release it just sucks.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.

Unless the legenday armor ist a boxed set containing all 6 pieces.
Or given the new “outfits” (what some town clothes get converted to) like the pirate captain’s outfit. They could go that way. Although that might be trickier to implement because outfits under the new wardrobe-system are only a skinset that overwrite your appearance and don’t carry any stat-values. (If I understood the concept correctly.) And I can’t see many people going through the trouble of creating a legendary armour uf they don’t get a BIS item (or a set of those) in the process aside from the skin as well.

If you happen to stumble across any typos,
you may keep them to rear new and interesting variants in your basement.

Well, there already is “legendary” armor in the game

e.g.:
[&AgHZGQAA]

but these items are reserved for the legendary guards in WvW so the item codes only exist for them.

It is unlikely, as you said, due to the sheer number of possibilities.

I don’t think we will see legendary armors – but we may see legendary dyes, which add unique particle effects to each piece.

I think the Ascended only having three sets is because it is for the stats not the aesthetic value. You transmute a skin onto it that you like. Players get the stats they want and ArenaNet gets the cash they want and everyone wins. Legendary armor would be a nice addition to the game, but it’s all moot to me til I can start saving trait setups. We are almost there though.

I do believe that legendary armor will be reality in a future, it would be the ultimate armor since you can pick any stats and since it will be account bound many alts can wear it.

Maybe use ascended armor as “precursor” and the armor be made as bundle since you don’t need to pick a stat combo anyway, and use a combination of new gifts and some gifts existent in game like the fortune one.

I wouldn’t mind spend ~10k gold in materials and some “grind” to get a legendary armor.

About the look, well that is hard to imagine, that should be something amazing that makes you stand out w/o turning you into a disco ball, lol

Me and my friend talked a couple times about that. Our conclusion? Legendary Armor would not be the best idea. Why?

Armor cost a lot to create, since you need to work 5-6 more times than for a Weapons. We have now 21 Legendary Armor, so my bet is that we won’t have more than 3 Legendary Armor set. (1 per profession or 3 that you can choose to use on any armor type?) We already have so much of the same Legendary Weapons right now, 1 or 2 years after the introduction of Legendary Armor, we will see a bunch of clone with the same armor and weapons. It also hurt a lot the mix maxing in the game, since you will probably use all the piece from 1 set.

Our solution was simple. Anet already talked about the future introduction of new legendary gear, probably trinkets. Imagine a trinket (the best choice would be the Amulet since you only have 1 and the Back items have a skin) that would create a aura and some effect on the armor that you are currently using. One amulet could create glowing logogram (hieroglyph, Chinese character, etc) all over the armor. Another one could envelop you in fire, another one could create a glowing aura with fiery all around you, etc. The players could combine one of these effect with one of the several armor already available and the aura of a legendary weapon to create a lot of different looks.

I agree with Thaddeus. Legendary Armors probably won’t exist because of the look thing. ANet made this game centered around how your character looks and their individuality in terms of colors, and armor pieces. Legendary Armors would more than likely take that away. IF they can implement Legendary Armors which allow you to change your look without the use of charge stones, then that might get people to go after it(think about it, change looks and stats without cost). Otherwise, I cant see the same route for Legendary Armors as they do for Legendary Weapons.

And Legendary Weapons don’t? The only weapon that has alternate versions is the greatsword (because GS are special). For any other weapon you have exactly one choice. Not much variation available there.

Legendaries were never for you to look unique. They were for you to be recognizable from a mile away as the person with the big wallet.

I expect that every Profession will get 1 Legendary armor that represents their magicz. Anything less then 8 would be a shame. At least for the first batch.

I would hate to see every Scholar wearing the same Legendary Armor (read: particle effect)

Can we get some more armor skins that you can obtain through actual gameplay rather than swiping your credit card before we come up with some grand scheme for Legendary armor?

That’d be great.

How about no look for legendary armor? BUT! U can apply any look on it without transmutation stones? And, combined with stat change….I would go for it ^^

Or they could even add some cool effect to any skin you wearing, if it is legendary. Like choosable color/form of glow/effects, or smth like that. No transmutation stones would be mayby to extreme, but this one might work.

I said this in 2-nd paragraph. They just should make it work with any skin. So it would be noticable as legendary. Extra effects should be the right way. Like Legendary hammer makes your armor look better. Smth like this. Mayby even ability to choose from the pool of all effects, which could be gained from legendary weapons. The benefit would be ability to use both effects. Without bug. Like having lightings from bolt(I have sword in hand) and shiny aura from eternity(this would be added effect from armor). Smth like that.

The only drawback I see with this is, by the time we have legendary armor, the people that actually make it will probably have a legendary weapon or 2. By then they will all look like giant disco balls, or a glowing ball of light coming at you a mile away.

I’m all for legendary armor, as GW1 had something similar (obsidian armor?) but I
would want it to be something more subtle than giant glowing particle effects.

At most what I would want to see is a set of armor engraved with runes with something similar to what infinite light is now.

Well I can see Legendary Armor happening someday. The appeal of armor that can take on any stat is rather appealing on its own, but it probably would be fixed to weight class (or else every character you own could share 1 set of armor).

I would expect it to be crafted piece by piece rather than all at once, but the overall cost probably won’t be that high. From what I’ve seen for ascended armor crafting, the full set is roughly 3x the cost of a weapon, with only the body using about the same amount to craft. Given the difficulty of Legendary weapons, it could end that each part would be a good bit less than Legendary weapons so the full set would cost about twice as much, but maybe require a greater variety (e.g. dungeon tokens, gifts, etc).

As for the looks, I think the best way would be to add a few different styles, maybe even just 1 set for each armor class. For the armor, I think the real advantage lies in the one thing it can do that weapons cannot, which is dyes. With some armor, dyes don’t do much, but imagine Legendary armor having dye slots for their special lights and what not.
Anyway, I see Legendarys being more of something for visuals than stats, since original that is all they really were for before the pick any stat stuff. So for the armor, I see it being more of a single set for armor weight that you can customize with dyes over several radically different styles. Some people may dislike having a limit choice in appearance, but that is kinda already the case for the weapons; I know I am personally not a huge fan of The Bifrost’s appearance but still been working at it since it is the only legendary staff (so far anyway).

Its just 2 effects. If u have eternity and bolt > u can combine this effects only with bug. And it would hold only until u swap your weapons. But Armor would let you add 1 effect to your set. Like shiny to bolt or lightnings for eternity.

Also, effects could be subtle. Like with legendary hammer. It just makes your armor skin look polished.

If Legendary armor made it’s way into the game, I think a sensible route to take is have one per class but obviously built with Charr in mind at the forefront. Please none of that stretched out visuals we see now that makes many armors look odd on them (specifically boots and leggings).

As far as what I would like their effects to be…hmm, that’s a tough one. Auras are always nice. Wouldn’t mind tracers (picturing Zhylaw with his soul speed from the Chronicles of Ridkitten).

You could even toss in a buff that has racial visuals connected to an emote. /legend would activate a 5min buff that gave you the ghostly tracers.

Not sure I would want them to have selectable stats like the weapons and certainly wouldn’t want them to cost thousands of gold. Would much rather have some extraordinarily long epic “Legendary” quest per piece that gave you at least half of the components needed to forge them. Could build an expansion around it for all I care.

I actually don’t see anything in the realm of armors happening anytime soon though.

Personally I’d like to see a selection of Mystic Forge recipes that can be used to promote every single weapon, trinket and armour right through the rarity spectrum from basic white to legendary purple.

If you promote a weapon/armour etc via these recipes to Ascended you get to pick one of a small selection of minor particle effects to be added to the weapon.

If you promote a weapon/armour etc to Legendary, you get to pick from a larger selection of particle effects and colours, and also build custom footprints from a selection of inner shapes, outer shapes and colours.

That way any item in game can become Legendary and there would be infinite variety from a `Legendary Once-Was-White Rusty Sword` with rust coloured particle effects and footprints, all the way up through every skin in the game.
