Hello everybody me and my friend just bought this game Friday(He got the free version I bought the expansion which comes with the game.)my question is what should we do to get started and how is the community? What I mean by community is like population and player’s attitude I only ask cause I constantly see videos on Youtube and posts on reddit saying that the servers in this game are empty.

Are you Euro or NA? There’s loads of players on all the maps I’ve been on. If you ever do find yourself on a lightly populated map then it may actually be beneficial since you won’t have some guy come barging through your event while you’re feeling your way through it. While you’re starting out anyway.

As for attitudes – there’s all sorts. People can be pretty helpful and chatty in this game but you’ll find the “other” sort every so often.

Fire up the Hyperbowl ma, we’re going to town!

Would you like some hard cheeze with your sad whine?

Like ESO, this game uses a mega-server system. In PvE zones, the game spawns a new instance of a zone only if the existing zone is getting full. I rarely go into a zone and see no one. Servers only matter as far as World v. World is concerned. There, you may find that the WvW maps in the lower echelons in each area (EU or NA) can be empty. Look at http://mos.millenium.org/na/matchups/ for an idea of which servers are in the high or lower tier match-ups if WvW will matter to you. Be aware that your friend will not be able to WvW until he gets a character to level 60 (I think).

As to player attitudes… like most games, you’ll find friendly, helpful folks and players you won’t care for. My experience in NA has been that there are more of the cool folks and less of the jerks than I’ve seen in some games.

Getting started: once you’ve both picked a race and profession, you’ll go through a short intro instance and then end up in that race’s starting area. If you want to join your friend but don’t want to play as the same race, you will need to go where he is. To do so, find your racial city (the entrance is close to where you’ll appear after the intro instance). Find the portal to Lion’s Arch. On the map, it will be a pinkish icon. In the human city there are two portals, you’ll want the one on the upper level closer to the middle of the city, not the other one (which leads to a L30 area). Once in Lion’s Arch, there will be more portals. find the one guarded by members of the race your friend chose. You’ll end up in his race’s city, and will need to go to the portal to that starter area. If you find yourself in a different mega-server instance of the same zone, you can right click on his portrait in the party UI and choose the option, “Join in <name of zone>.”

Then, run around and do stuff. There will be area-based “hearts” that can be completed by doing various tasks (think of them as quests with — usually – more than one option to complete them). There are also dynamic events. Interact with NPC’s, explore, kill stuff. Virtually everything you can do in GW2 grants experience. Oh, and have fun.

Well done!

OP, this is a great example of how helpful your fellow players can be in this game.

I find that there are more toxic players in general in sPvP than there are in PvE or WvW.

However this is true in all games and generally speaking I’ve seen less toxicity (in-game) in this game than other games.

One small comment

They made a change to the maps. Each new character now has one waypoint in each starting racial map. For example if you’re in the human map and your friend is in the charr map and the two of you party up, you can see each other’s dots and the waypoints in the starting maps available to you on the big map and either can waypoint to the other, if they have the few copper needed for the waypoint.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

When you explore the map, pay attention to any nearby ongoing events. Meta event chains are the signature feature of GW2 to get players working together achieve different goals in specific map. They are not quests given by NPCs. The UI will notify you when an active one is near your current location. End game area Orr and HoT maps are basically built upon meta event chains.

PvE community is very nice as long as the content is easy.

Can get become quite toxic on hard maps (TT, TD, VB T4, instanced content), and in PvP of course (though at a low skill level it’s not so bad). WvW really depens on server, but people are usually nice there, too.

Population is usually granted because of megaserver, but outside primetime (at least in EU) some less desirable maps become empty. Also, sometimes you need to use the LFG tool to get to a full(er) map instance.

But for world bosses, there are still a lot of people around. Also, the vanilla GW2 maps have seen a large influx of players since it became F2P.

Because WvW has no megaserver (apart from one map, EoTM), empty maps are quite common there, though.

Welcome to Tyria.

Don’t worry too much about your gear. You will do just fine. You can pick up gear from killing mobs or doing bosses. If you do your story, you get rewarded with gear but mostly, you do not have to worry too much until you get to the later levels. You could even craft your own gear though it is difficult when you first start because you won’t have many materials. You can buy low level clothes for a minimum amount on the Trading Post too.

Hint: Gather plants, chop wood and harvest the ore. You can always sell it if you don’t want it but it is good to start your collection so that you can craft later if you want to.

There are 3 ways to get gear. Drops, karma gear from heart vendors, the trading post.
Drops are free. You should have enough karma to buy karma gear from heart merchants. If you still need gear then buy from the trading post (lion head icon top of the UI).

1) don’t sell your loot to area merchants. Only sell on the trading post. Most stuff sells better when salvaged so be sure to have a salvaging kit and harvesting tools (pick, axe, sickle). Harvest everything you see. Check the prices on the trading post for drops and either sell them there or salvage and sell the mats (materials) from that.

2) fast but less gold is selling directly to a buyer. Slower, but more gold is posting it for sell. Most people either match the lowest seller or price it a bit below. You can pick up your gold at a trading post.

3) the Mists (crosses swords at top of the UI). If you go there you’ll be in the lobby (or maybe the training area, if they still have that. If you’re in the training area go north and up the stairs though a portal). Once in the lobby you’ll have access to the trading post to pick up your gold and the items you buy as well as merchants to sell you salvage kits, harvesting tools and other items (what they sell you might depend on your level). To leave the lobby either use the crossed swords again (you’ll return to where you were before) or go through the portal to Lions Arch.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

You can exchange your loots with other players through trading post. Get the best gears whenever you could make life easier. Meanwhile you can also salvage the loots or farm raw materials to craft your own gears. If eventually if you want to get the highest tier gears, you need to level up your crafting discipline anyway.

My recommendation is to keep your weapon within 5 levels of your Character masterwork quality and armor no more than 10 levels for easier leveling experience. Pick up cheap masterwork gear on the trading post.

And as everyone said, harvest, salvage and sell or keep the materials gained.
