3 Obsidian Shards for 3 Laurels?
I use Laurels to buy lots of things, to contrary belief i have no interest in ascended gear and am using my laurels to make me some money.
as for ‘’is it meant to appear that we have different ways of getting shards’’ sure, but then you do have a different way so it doesn’t appear to be different, it is different.
to be perfectly honest i don’t see why this would or should bother anyone, don’t want to use laurels for shards? then don’t……
I thought you were going to ask why is it 3 for 3 instead of 1 for 1, which I think is a far better question.

because the price is absolutely ridiculous and is a trick to make it seem like we have other ways to get things. No one in their right mind is going to use their laurels to buy obsidian shards at that price. It is no where near being a reasonable ratio. Not even close. Just because it doesn’t bother you, that doesn’t mean it isn’t allowed to bother other people. If something is grossly mispriced then people are going to complain.
i didn’t say it wasn’t aloud to bother other people i said i don’t see why it should / could but each to there own.
the ratio yeh sure its a slight eye candy trick but….meh, not many people will use laurels to buy shards even if it was 1:1 so…i dunno i just don’t see a problem to be honest, that’s my opinion ya’ll entitled to your own though, ofcourse.
Considering the fact that there’ll be a time you simply don’t have a use for Laurels I guess that’s why it exists. There’s already a point you reach though where karma is useless. I’ve thrown out millions of karma on boxes and have obsidian shards rotting in my bank that I’ll probably never use. Maybe if I like a future legendary they add enough to make another one… Or if they add new uses for the Shards. Anyways yeah, it’s a waste of Laurels to buy those for that price.
Nothing on the laurel vendor is worth its price, maybe the necklace, but the rest is overpriced to the extreme.
I use laurels to get ascended gear that I cant get from anywhere else i.e necks and accessories. Rest is just not worth it considering the cost vs time.
35 laurels for an ascended ring that costs 10(!) in fractals… wut? They should be more like 10 laurels tops, if even that.
6 months from now you will have laurels coming out of your eyeballs and will be complaining you can’t even spend enough of them to get rid of all the piles of laurels you have.
Not everything is about the right now. There are some goals for laurels that are clear winners, like ascended gear, but after you have that it is all just fluff and other ways to get things.

I think your speculation is wrong. Logic suggests they will continue to expand the laurel system to include any and all new ascended gear and weapons. I doubt anyone will ever be at a point where they are just burning laurels, unless they choose to ignore ascended gear. Also think about those poor souls with alts that want ascended gear.
No, I don’t see that at all. More fun items and more useful items will get added as time goes by to keep people from accumulating laurels. Laurels are the perfect currency to keep people hooked on the game. Limited to 1 per day at a max. People MUST login every day to get them.
This offering is in there to hopefully get some sap to spend his laurels on shards because they saw the formula for the legendary and never bothered to think the shards come from somewhere else. Now that guy needs to farm more laurels, and play even longer, to get whatever top end gear he wants, because he MUST use laurels for that.

No…Not with only getting 1 Laurel per day and 10 per month and not with the price of things. Only people that will have “piles of laurels” will be people who don’t spend them on any single item. These aren’t dungeon tokens. You can’t just farm them.

If I play every single day for the next 2 years I’ll have enough laurels to gear out my alts in one set of stats with just the laurel gear available now. This is a narrow view that you will be able to cap out on laurels ever. People with one character will in the relatively near future but beyond that they most likely will not.
3 for 3 price is poor design. That’s 250 days for 500k karma which can be farmed in a matter of days. 10 for 1 laurel wouldn’t even be worth it.
Using Laurel’s on anything other then ascended (possibly the tonic or pets if you are a collector I guess) is a big mistake unless you are so casual that none of this matters at all and by that point you can just cut yourself laurels out of paper in real life and color them in with markers and give them to yourself and RP that you are having a blast in your playstyle and are a powerful warrior without even signing in.

It’s time gating. Makes you play 2 days more.

Well Personally I think using them for anything other then ascended amulets right now is a waste. It only takes 10 days of fractals to get a ring which is a much better investment. For the newly added accessories it is also a waste. 12 guild comms takes 6 weeks right now, but that time frame is quickly diminishing. Someone starting now can get 12 comms in 4 weeks since Rush is unlocked by many large guilds. In another week you will be able to get an accessory every 3 weeks once people unlock guild challenge, and in two weeks people will be able to get an accessory in 2 weeks once Puzzle is unlocked.
So basically laurels have a “bad” price for every item that is not exclusive to the vendor. Which is the point. It is an alternative, casual way to get things with a opportunity cost built in. Yes you can farm more karma if you grind for it. Yes you can get more rare gear if you grind for it. Yes you can get more dyes if you farm them. Every item on the vendor is at a poor exchange rate because it is essentially a bonus method of obtaining things.

I understand your point on the accessories.
The price looks out of touch with the game itself. We are talking 500 days of doing your daily to have enough laurels to handle the karma portion of your legendary which is the only thing Obsidian Shards are used for besides a shield no one uses. Prices can’t be completely arbitrary even if they are just an alternative way. Would you do your daily for 500 days just for the karma portion of your legendary or farm for 4~ days and get the same amount.
As a gamer to me the price listed looks unprofessional as if whoever thought it up had no clue of what they were used and in what manner. Maybe they have a whole team that decided this is the optimal number but I don’t see the logic behind it. It might as well be 100 laurels per 1 obsidian shard at that rate and by that logic it would be just as reasonable.

That has to be some kind of joke right? Now before you jump all over me I know you can easily buy Obsidian Shards for karma and that is what I do. But honestly, 3 Obsidian Shards for 3 Laurels? How is that any where near a fair price? 3 days of dailies for 3 obsidian shards? You can get way more than 3 obsidian shards in karma in a single day. No one is ever going to use Laurels to purchase obsidian shards. Why even have such a horrendous ratio like that? Is it supposed to make it appear like we have different ways of getting obsidian shards?
Very simple logic behind this. Laurels where added to dailys , before that all you got was the karma jugs. You are in fact getting more then before as you can spend the laurels and the karma.
6 months from now you will have laurels coming out of your eyeballs and will be complaining you can’t even spend enough of them to get rid of all the piles of laurels you have.

I can agree that obsidian shards are one of the most ridiculously priced laurel items. However they are not actually the worst. 1 laurels for a single bag of T1 mats is probably the worst trade on there. Even the T6 mat bags are worse since you can get a couple hardened leather worth basically nothing for your laurel. I do think that some of the items should be adjusted to be more reasonable.
It took me 4 months of (semi) casual play to get all the karma I needed for my legendary. If I use that as a baseline. 500 obsidian shards over 4 months would be equivalent to 40(from monthlies) + 120 (from dailies) = 160 laurels = 3 shards per laurel. If we assume a decent opportunity cost we can lower it to 2 shards per laurel. Even making it equal to the cost of grinding karma would only involve tripling the rate. But since they want the cost to be higher then the direct grind method a 2-1 ratio would be acceptable. So really the current exchange is only 2x worse then what a more careful consideration gives you.
People suggesting a 10-1 exchange are pretty unreasonable in my opinion.
Edit : I also just realized you get a karma jug from doing the daily as well which gives enough karma for 2 shards. This means you can get all 250 shards using nothing buy daily rewards in 4 months, which is what it took me before there were laurels or karma jugs. So basically the rate is fine as is.

You lost me here…Where are you getting 3 shards per laurel from?

I was using the fact that if you get all the shards from karma grinding it takes about 4 months of semi-casual play time to get the 500 shards you need for a legendary. In those same 4 months you can get 160 laurels. So if the methods were equivalent then you should be able to get 3 shards per laurel.
Obviously it is a rough estimate, some people would take more time and some people take less time to get that much karma. I just considered myself as a pretty average player using my personal experience. It is by no way a fixed number.
Unid dyes is all you need
