The 400 KB/s speed is the problem. When I installed GW2, I was averaging over 1 MB/s download speed.

The fastest option would have been to just copy the Gw2.dat from your friend’s computer. The system specific data is in a different file.
The final size of that file is 17GB+ so you still have a ways to go for the whole thing. Patches are already consolidated. You are just far from having the whole thing. There is a reason the minimum system requirements has “25 GB available HDD space”.
The game also resumes downloading automatically so you don’t have to do it all at once.

I would have been delighted with 400KB/s. I live out in the country at the edge of the connection and on a good day I have 100KB/s, but usually around 50.
It took me ~3 days (over 72 hours) to download the game, running continuously.
