Q:

And I already feel like I’m playing a MMO by myself because the community is so toxic that I’ve literally made it a point not to speak to anybody unless in a combat situation ,or asked something in the first place.

Make a comment about the HoT subject: People cussed me for hours in map chat, followed me from area to area, whispered me until I had to resort to blocking people.

Made a comment that 4 people fighting one warrior and never dropping him below 90% hp was kind of BS: Cussed, called a “kittentard” for hours on end, followed around, left PVP lobby and the whispers are STILL going on (Been about 30 minutes). This was after I made a point to say that I am INDEED new to the game and that it was entirely from a new player standpoint. (My GW2 Icon is flashing up a STORM right now from whispers.)

I’m honestly considering just muting everything but the system chat and taking solace that the game’s damage numbers won’t threaten my life, threaten to molest my children (Not that I have any) or spew constant vulgar insults at me.

Does anybody else feel like this? I feel like I might as well not even have bought the game. The reason you play an MMO is to meet new people and enjoy yourself. I feel like I’m tiptoeing around because no matter what I do, the entire map is just WAITING to blow up and just crap on anybody who dares speak.

Now, don’t get me wrong. If somebody is low enough to go around cussing somebody, trashing them and trying to make a scene, I’m not going to take that person seriously. The problem is that I CANT SEEM TO FIND ANYBODY ELSE WHO IS -WORTH- PLAYING WITH.

Level 17, human and the quest areas are empty. I think I maybe see…10 people a day?

I thought mega-servers meant all those “full” servers would be sharing some people to play with…

Right now, there is a lot of stress running around in-game in anticipation of the Tuesday patch. A lot of people aren’t playing until then to try out the changes while others are irked that their favorite build will be drastically changing (for better or worse).

Tuesday will be what is literally the largest balance patch in the game’s history. People are antsy about the numbers of changes coming.

My advice: Tune it out for a few days. Try again Tuesday afternoon or so. It may change quite a bit once people are able to start actually doing something new in the game again.

About the warrior thing… I legit have a friend who can build supremely tanky characters at the moment.

Honestly I keep mapchat off most of the time to avoid spam/missing PM or party chat with friends to be honest.

But yeah, I think it’s just stress and being unsure about what exactly the upcoming big patch will bring, and the HoT pre-purchase stuff seems to be a touchy subject.

While the above posters are right about there being a lot of angst regarding the upcoming patch and Heart of Thorns expansion, and I have witnessed some lively conversation in map chat about these things, I have yet to see anyone behave like what OP is describing.

Dear brian. Your worst mistake was trying to talk to pvp people. Pvp people are far faaaar more toxic then eny other part of the game. Being 5 days old ingame and telling people what to do is just adding a gasoline in a pre erupting volcano.

Find yourself a guild and once you get friendly with them you can vent there if something is bothering you. Never with strangers because strangers will most likely backfire at you.

The thing is, you must be doing something wrong if people angry whisp you for hours (if that’s the truth), bacause in my allmost 3 years of playing i got maybe 6 angry whisps, all of them while playing ranger in pvp.

I believe you’ve been mistaken. I didn’t tell anybody what to do. I asked if a ranger tanking damage for minutes on end without dropping below 80~90% HP was normal, and was ridiculed and cussed at for hours, some people threatening to follow me across characters. Is there a folder where screenshots are kept? Because I pressed Printscreen on a few of the particuarly nasty bits and wouldn’t mind reporting a few of them.

Good to hear!

While I don’t take any of it to heart (Trolls will be trolls of course.), I do believe that there are some people out there that will. And the people willing to stoop so low as to just explode out at people over questions and comments are NOT helping the current HoT’s “Scam” or whatever people are calling it.

Odd. It didn’t seem to save them off, in the destination folder (Documents>Guildwars2>) or in my picture documents either. I guess PS isn’t the actual screen cap key?

Either way, It’s not just PVP, It’s PVE too ,which is the weird thing.

I’ll be sure to make sure it captures the screens next time because I’m honestly getting kind of sick of having to hear tweebs spout the same boring “Kid, cancer and testicular” insults every time somebody types anything. . _ .;

Currently, if you mention the expansion in map chat, you can almost be certain it will explode. There are a lot of unhappy people regarding the pricing/bundling/etc. that are more than happy to share their opinions on it and anyone that disagrees. Similarly, there are people that think the unhappy people have no right to be so, and are equally happy to share their opinions as well. That should avoid most PvE bile. As for PvP, I don’t know what sets off the typical PvPer, but apparently most things going by these forums.

It’s just kind of sad because some new players ask about the expansion or voice discomfort in the fact that they just paid $50 for the game and could have got it free and then map chat just RIPS them a new one like their lives and accounts depend on it. xD

That’s odd, print screen works for me to save screen shots. When you hit the button, you’ll notice in game yellow chat text saying that the screenshot was saved. If it’s not doing that, then I guess something is wrong.

I’m kind of surprised though. I’ve never seen that kind of behavior and I’ve been playing since launch. Maybe you’ve had the bad luck of getting into maps with especially trolly types? Even the last time in LA when one person kept spamming about a boycott, people were arguing with him but no one was really throwing out insults and ultimately we all just ignored and blocked the boycott guy. But yes, you will notice lots of arguments on both sides, for the prepurchase and against it. It’s best to just avoid the subject.

I generally tend not to bring it up, though it’s sad when some new player asks, it’s like stepping into a minefield. I was in a voice chat party with a girl on skype when she literally logged out, deleted her characters and uninstalled the game simply because she said that it was the sixth time she had been cussed out that night.

Either the people who are seeing less of it are in better servers, or just have generally better luck because this has been something I see EVERY DAY, EVERY TIME I log in.

If they are ripping into you for voicing displeasure over this, it’s probably the fairly small number of people that see any criticism of the pricing to be entitled complaining. That said, you can contact support if you bought the game from ANet in the last 30 days. Some people are saying your option is to have your current account cancelled (refund) and then buy the HoT option. That said, I’ve also heard it that ANet is helping people that match those two criteria switch over to a HoT account without progress lost.

If you bought the game more than 30 days ago and just got around to playing much? Almost certainly out of luck.

I apologize then I guess. I did your post and seemed like simple venting because some players were maybe a bit harsh towards you. There are tools in game to prevent players from harassing you that don’t really require you to post on the forums, so obviously people who share my perspective view a post like this as venting or a cry for attention (not that you are doing that).

I would argue that if you thought my reply to you that offered the tip that you need thicker skin playing in an online community is toxicity, then you do in fact have some pretty thin skin, at least in my opinion. I’m sorry if you took my lighthearted bit of advice as toxic, but you’re kind of just proving my original point actually.

Yeah, I just want to say this has been the exact opposite of my experience with Gw2 and by and large most of the people I’ve met have been friendly and helpful. Even in PvP.

Exception: as a newbie, DO NOT play Ranked pvp, if so, you’ll kitten off team-mates that are mostly just trying to win. Stick to custom arenas while learning. I actually made that sort of mistake when I first started playing when the PvP interface was different because ranked was easier to join a game for and the custom arena list is actually more intimidating when you barely know what the descriptions and information there really mean.

Unfortunately, the timing is a bit bad because there are people that are seriously kittened about the expansion pricing and that new players get a better deal on HoT than veterans do. I myself am pretty disappointed with it, but I would never take it out on a new player.

Welcome to the game.

Hopefully things should calm down a bit more by next weekend after people have started adjusting to the patch and after Anet [hopefully] makes an official response to the price drama.

If you’ve never seen this type of behavior in GW2 before, you’re lucky. I have taken a few new player rangers into my guild just so they’d have friendly voices to talk to… they were getting harassed ALL OVER map chat in Diessa Plateau just because they’d rolled a ranger as their first toon. Adding up to the stress of ANet being silent about the prepurchasing problems, toxic comments are never “gone” in an MMO. You probably just got on the gone map. Chats differ from map to map. And of course sPvP is going to have that “competitive” toxic oh-you-suck-feel to that of MOBAs. World vs World has the least toxicness imo since everyone has to focus on something unless the cmdr is a crazy cussing kitten.

It’s rather sad to see that you had a toxic introduction to the game. I apologize in behalf of those people. There will always be scumbags in a MMO community but in general, GW2 playerbase is rather polite, at least in my experience. I tend to primarily focus on PVE and I’ve mostly encountered helpful people. It is unfortunate that you faced the toxic minority of the community, so early in your game. I implore you to not judge the whole community based on your current experience, since the majority of the players, including myself, are willing to offer you a warm welcome. As someone already mentioned, do report abusive players as Anet usually takes good care of them.

Pretty much the primary reason I don’t play sPvP at all unless with friends such that we don’t care if we lose.

I’ve never had an issue with this community outside of sPvP. Ranked game tryhards are disgusting with their general attitudes and sense of superiority while following instructions of what some website tells them to do exactly. I find sPvP extremely boring at the mid/high levels of play because everything is exactly the same and the pace of combat is absolutely terribly slow. Yoloqueue unranked with experimental builds with some friends is a total blast, though, like healing power thief and physical utility nuke warrior.

Sometimes you just have to be seen playing the ‘wrong’ profession
Sometimes playing profession X with weapon Y will set people off
Sometimes asking someone (politely) please to not use knockback in group fights will do it
Sometimes you enter a zone and find people are engaged in shockingly racist, sexist or just obscene conversations. And things get truly vile when politics or religion get involved.

Both myself and guildmates have run into this. The correct reaction is /block /report, but it’s a nuisance regardless, and it’s very definitely there.

And just to be clear: I’m talking about people minding their own business, who suddenly get hate tells and abusive chat comments for equipping an axe on a warrior, a rifle on an engineer, playing a ranger etc.

Also, no, this is not just in the PVP lobby and LA, though those two zones are prime candidates.

Not sure if serious.

So you decide to:

A.) address the just about most toxic current topic in map chat and are amazed people are trying to lynch you?

B.) make comments about class balance when you clearly have absolutely no experience with the game and or it’s classes and you’re amazed people are anoyed at your remarks?

Know the proverb:“What goes around, comes around.”?

Now, don’t get me wrong. If somebody is low enough to go around cussing somebody, trashing them and trying to make a scene, I’m not going to take that person seriously. The problem is that I CANT SEEM TO FIND ANYBODY ELSE WHO IS -WORTH- PLAYING WITH.

Your problem seems to be one of attitude. Have you ever considered that others view you as NOT-WORTH-PLAYING WITH? In general the consens is that if you remain polite and respectful towards others, you’ll get greeted and supported. Then again, start of with the vocabulary you used and weighing in on disscussion you should have stayed clear or, results may vary.

Ive been enjoying this game for 3 years, and the GW1 for 10. The only times I have never enjoyed it is when I allowed MAP chat through the filter.

Out of curiosity, what server did you choose? Megaservers means that servers aren’t entirely relevant, but they still are. The way the algorithm allocates people is to place them with their server population before other servers. I assume in five days you don’t have a guild or a lot of friends, so server is likely to be the largest sorting consideration.

You may just be with a less than friendly group.

I don’t participate in map chat, ever, so I really don’t know how ridiculous people are getting. I know I haven’t seen these kinds of conversations, but since I don’t look for them, who knows. I really prefer to think we’re a more welcoming community than that. But then, based on your description I’d like to think all communities are better than that.

All you do is right click on there name in chat and choose report. They won’t be in the game any more for a while after Anet reviews the chat. They take verbal abuse very seriously

Well sorry to disagree but I don’t think that’s entirely accurate. If it was then a certain player who I have know to be both toxic, abusive and a complete kitten to anyone and everyone if they don’t go along with his BS, pretty much daily for at least 12-18 months would of been long gone with the amount of reports made about him.. but still every day he is there doing exactly the same thing.
So nah I don’t think the reporting tools are taken all that seriously at all unless it affects there direct sales like gold sellers and even then I am not all that convinced.

I’ll have to say this… Usually when everyone else seems wrong, you’re the wrong one. So maybe you should review YOUR chat inputs to see why they merited such bad answers. In general the GW2 comunity is quite nice.
And indeed 4 people failing to down a warrior means that either the warrior is pretty good, the 4 guys are pretty bad, or a combination of both (my guess).

Yup PvP people can be rather annoying but dont let it get you down. lots of good advice from people that have already posted

Made a comment that 4 people fighting one warrior and never dropping him below 90% hp was kind of BS: Cussed, called a “kittentard” for hours on end, followed around, left PVP lobby and the whispers are STILL going on (Been about 30 minutes).

Had to LOL at the above comment tho. Were those 4 people not wielding any weapons because pretty much any class is toast when focused by 4 people.

Your typical average gamer -
“Buff my main class, nerf everything else. "

My guild and I are drama-less toxic-less people. Wanna join?

True, things have been going nuts since the HoT price announcement, but things will simmer down (I hope), this community is, overall, the least toxic community I’ve stumbled onto.

Chatting at all in general chat channels in MMOs is like playing Russian roulette.

This is not to say there are not a lot of decent people out there, if I had to guess I would say there are more good and mature people than there are “toxians”, but since they don’t feel the need to spout out at everything they see in chat you don’t hear much from them.

Don’t get discouraged, and don’t change the way you play because of toxic people. Don’t feed their ego by responding to their crap, or changing what you do. The best thing to do is ignore those whom you feel have nothing to add to the game, and do you best to play and act the way you would like everyone to.

Not much of a plug when you don’t mention the guild info. :P
