as the title says, its been a little over a month since HoT was released,
boldly charging the price of a full game at $50, the expansion has received many negative reviews from customers due to lack of content for the premium pricetag.
IGN community reviewers gave it a 5.2 “Mediocre” for example.

of these negative reviews many were frustrated about the lack of new armour skins to customize our characters with, the entire expansion has an embarrassing THREE armour sets per weight class, three.

any possible new armour being added in the future is likely to be legendary raid rewards, apparently we’ve had our fill of readily obtainable armour skins, with the three we paid $50 for.

since the release of HoT a little over a month ago,
Anet have released no less than FIVE outfits,
nigh-uncustomizable one-piece sets that they want to charge you several dollars for.

so my questions for Anet are:
do you not think its a tad bit insulting to have an expansion supposedly years in the works and release it for $50 with a mere three armour sets, and then IMMEDIATELY show that you infact have the ability to churn out five sets in little over a month?

is there any, ANY! possibility of more armour skins? even is you put them in the gemstore in place of outfits?

and my questions for the community:
am i the only one insulted by the lack of new armours in the expansion followed by a flurry of cashgrab “outfits”?

are you happy with the number of armour sets released with the expansion?

will you be buying “outfits” in the future?

would you buy gemstore armour skins?

-Oh be assured you arent the only one that is pretty darn mad about that, you could power a city block with my anger.. if that would be possible in a way.

-Also nope.. i am certainly not happy about the number. I expected atleast a full set per specialisation and one armor per map as meta reward like in the silver wastes thats related to the map design\enemies\allies you encounter…like exalted armor or stuff

-I never did and never will, even if i may like an outfit how it looks.. i may want to replace parts of it in the near future or use parts of it on other looks, thats just how i roll. Would be a waste of money to me and frustate me. “man these shoulders would look great on that look. And man id buy that outfit just for that epic top.” If you catch my drift.

-Yes indeed i would. I did it before they changed the entire system and even bought skin packs that i didnt need right away. Know why? Cause i never know what i come up with if i play arround in the wardrobe. Happened a lot that i ran into the gem store to buy a skin pack just to get that one part i want.

also.. inb4 generic. “i like outfits” and “dont like it dont buy it” comments…

I’m pretty upset about the lack of new ingame attainable skins. I was expecting at least 10 new sets per armor class.

Yep, more armors would be nice. Outfits are “nice to have”, but armors and weapons are a big part of this game. We get black lion weapons (total ripoff but at least they’re there) but where are the armors?

The recent (probably not as recent as we even realize) changes to company policy on how they bring in income has been disturbing. The original game was such a deal, huge maps full of wonderful gems, unique and interesting jumping puzzles, wvw that, while it had some issues was super fun, pvp (that wasn’t very balanced). It was just so much content with so many mysteries to discover all for 50$. And this included years of support and continued updates. Now, we paid the same amount for a small fraction of the content, even though it should be much much easier to build content with the game engine running smoothly. They went free to play, and made so many questionable desicions regarding their financing and their loyal playerbase is feeling it. (At least I am)

I still love the game, but I’m starting to feel exploited. I want to give them money and support the game, but I no longer feel like I’m getting even 1/10 of the value for my money. While it seems to be about even with other games, they spent years standing out as being the best. You hear a lot of players who recently joined saying things like: “this isn’t as bad as other games”. However, things were so much better before. The community has really been damaged by the recent actions of the management of gw2. The devs are still putting in some good work, but they are being told to sell that work rather than give it to us, even though we bought their game and it was their old policy to continue to support us with content.

I’m fighting it with my wallet, and have stopped giving money to the gem store. I won’t fall into the trap of changing wvw servers for huge amounts of money. It is sad that I feel this way, because for years this was such a great place. When I play in the old world with my gf, I remember why this game is so awesome. In the new maps, I have fun, but it feels like a different game. I actually enjoy them, and am glad that they put harder maps into the game, but its not for everyone. And it seems like they don’t care that a lot of players can’t enjoy any of the new content they paid for.

I really expected a variety of maps with this expansion. Some harder, and some standard. I was shocked when the maps all followed the same style. I really appreciate the work the devs are doing, but its just not reaching me the same. I can’t really continue to use my 3 man guild. They are constantly releasing bundles for outfits and glider skins with NO extra options for those that spent money on the game. What they give you now for your money is a small fraction of the past, and then they ask you to give more money for “extra” features that would’ve been included when the game first came out 3 years ago.

I am discouraged, and I don’t see how things could change in any reasonable pace that would please the community. Too much damage done, with no obvious ways out. I can see this games playerbase dropping in half within the next 2 years. I know I’ve been playing a lot less since the expansion. I enjoy it, but the bitter taste wont go away. I feel for those who are unhappy, and just want to roam the jungle looking for mysteries and wonder.

I hope something with the direction changes soon, as I think it is critical if they don’t want to continue into a slow descent that has already begun. Great game, great devs, poor management.

I know they changed their content release to:
- Armors ingame
- Outfits in Gemstore

However, as with the BLC Weaponsets, I don`t like the huge difference.

Sure, armor is more complex to create and is known for clipping issues.
Outfits are easier, for sure.

However people like the mix and match quality of armor. People wanted more armor.
It is baffling how much difference is building up between the ingame content and the gemstore stuff.

Even more with the introduction of seasonal, RNG and taking things out of the store to create extra demand.

In terms of armor skins, for me personaly, HoT was mostly a medicore release with the amount of armor skins (which completly disregarded the wishes of the community over the years) not holding up, to what was to be expected from their history of releases.

I realy hope they clarify some thigns. Tell us there is more in the pipeline, because right now I am just disapointed.
Not mad or angry, just disapointed.

I’m not only dissapointed by the low number of new armorsets in the expansion
but in general about the number of armor sets we have gotten since we got the
wardrobe. There was Carapace … and that was it i think

I wouldn’t even complain if we had 5 new SETS in the gemstore instead of those
boring outfits.

But normally for a full price expansion there should have been more or less the
same number of armor sets in it than what was in the original game, and also
quite some that are “easy” to obtain like crafting, buying for gold or karma and
not only via grinding some new currencys and whatever.

I know they changed their content release to:
- Armors ingame
- Outfits in Gemstore

Problem is .. we get (nearly) no new armor ingame .. and also none in the gemstore.

I really really wish they revert that and give us back armor skins in the gemshop
just like in the first 1.5 years, instead giving us just Carapace in the next 1.5 years.

EVERY MMO is awesome until it is released then its unfinished. A month after release it just sucks.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.

I dont think Im incorrect but maybe an expert can confirm or correct me but making a set of armour is multiple degrees harder than making an outfit in game.
For each piece of armour, it has to tested to avoid work and not cause graphic issues with every other piece currently in game which makes it a longer and longer process. An outfit doesn’t have those issues.
I think that’s why the outfits are the profit center for anet in the gemstore and not armour. Whether thats a good or bad thing I dont know as Im too lazy to bother playing with armour looks

I find it odd SWTOR can push out armor sets for their cash shop…constantly…but not possible for Anet to do the same at a fair profitable price.

HoT in itself I don’t find insulting, but Anet actions (or lack of) post release are, and separately the gem store management/team should have been replaced long time ago, they’re very disconnected.

Gw2 is focusing more and more on how much they can bleed out of us rather than actually building on top of what they have and making it the most successful MMO out there.

I’m still enjoying Gw2 but am refusing to go anywhere near the Gem store in the future because they blatantly ignore things that need attention in the game, plus the skins and outfits they release on the GS these days all look the same copy pasted/rehashed kitten.

I hope to god they don’t release the rest of the specialization pieces that each class got on the GS because that would be a kick in the nads to us all, but i wouldn’t put it past them tbh.

Not only outfits, either.

They’ve also released a whopping 4 Gem Store weapon sets since HoT launched. Which is way, WAY more than they’ve ever put out in such a short time period. Usually it’d be one a month, where since HoT its almost been one a week.

I mean, they did completely stop new weapon sets in the months leading up to HoT, so its clear they were using that time to make a “stockpile” of weapons. I’m not suggesting they’ve actually been able to create a new weapon set every week from scratch. But putting them all in the GemStore instead of in-game as part of HoT… yah, definitely some cashgrabbing going on there too, I think. There were more new weapons in HoT compared to armor skins, but even then the numbers of new stuff was hardly super impressive. Heck, I think at this point we’ve actually got just as many post-HoT weapon skins from the Gem Store as were in HoT itself, if you take into account that some of the in-game HoT skins are just recolors or slight modifications of one another.

There is a distinct lack of earnable armor sets, weapon sets, backpieces and glider skins.

How many earnable glider skins are there to be earned by playing content in HoT?

I don’t know bcause I didn’t buy HoT because they wouldn’t communicate how much stuff there was to earn in their premium-priced expansion. It wasn’t for lack of asking either. I asked multiple times how much horizontal progression there was in HoT in terms of earning gear and got zero response. Because of that, I decided I wouldn’t be getting the x-pac.

I must say that I’m personally disappointed in the weapons/armor from the HoT. Not only are there just a handful of sets but there is no armor to get as a drop from killing mobs. Even just one or two new green armor sets per armor weight as mob drops would have been nice. The armor and weapons they did give us, besides the ugly makeshift weapons, are all locked behind content and/or price gates. Sure, I get it. Do the work, get the reward. But heck, the few they put in are priced mighty steep to get all or require lots of salvaging RNG. There’s very little to get easily as a sweetener before doing the hard work for the rest.

Now, we paid the same amount for a small fraction of the content, even though it should be much much easier to build content with the game engine running smoothly.

It started with the decision to charge money for LW Season 2 episodes to bring in extra cash for future development. Feels like either their business model didn’t work out and the gem shop didn’t provide enough revenue to support continued development, leaving us to pick up the tab now, or anet has just decided they just want more money for less content. If either of those are true, need or want, a subscription would have been the better route. GW2 was an incredible deal considering what you got, so I appreciate that, but if their business model was unsustainable (whether or not that was knowable at the time and regardless of GW1’s success), it wasn’t worth it in the long run.

I still have a physical copy of HoT sitting by my desk, waiting for anet to give me a reason to install it rather than sell it off. This particular kind of problem – prepaid content vs “premium”, additional content – is one of the things that’s kept me from opening it. By buying the expansion, I’ve paid for new content, and equipment variety is one of the most basic kinds of content in this type of game. Where is it? Will LW Season 3 episodes carry the same kind of “log on or pay later” business model despite it supposedly being one of the IOU parts of HoT to be delivered later?

TL;DR: Feels like anet needs/wants money, and if that’s the case, just charge a kitten subscription already and be done with it.

EDIT: inb4 “gold to gems”; gold faucets have repeatedly been nerfed and sinks have been buffed. Even the currency conversion is a sink in itself.

There’s the ley line armour that you can get in DS, however since that set is ENTIRELY government by luck from the all lazy RNG, it can be impossible for some to get the whole set.

Nothing like spending 1-2 hours of the meta to try and get a chance as a piece of ley stone armor then get nothing from rewards or noxious pods.

Other than some weapon sets, yeah it’s pretty disappointing there’s no many armor sets to get and the ones that do exist are stuck behind massive massive grinds or just bad design (RNG is bad design no matter what).

I’m pretty upset about this too – I didn’t expect a bazilion new armor sets with HoT but at least 5-6 sets per weight class felt as far as i’m concerned decent for an expansion.

Some will argue they didn’t have the manpower to do it – but look at the gem store – we get outfits, a constant stream of weapons – so why couldn’t we have had more armor in the game?

What will it take to get more cool looking armor?

I don’t have an issue with the new outfits in the store. We know it is distinctly easier for them to design and push out outfits, and it’s obviously a solid source of income for them. Which is good.

I am disheartened that we did not get more in the way of armor and weapons skins achievable via game play. It would have been nice if 1 or 2 of the black lion weapon sets had been put into the game instead of into the shop. Rare drops for events, or rare drops that you only get a chance at if you complete a whole specific event chain. or…something.

I am hopeful that we will see more game play based skins filtered in when, perhaps, living world starts back up, or maybe as additional raid rewards, or new mastery achievement/collection tracks, or…yeah I could go on, but I’ll stop. You get my point. However, as hopeful as I am, I won’t hold my breath.

Aren’t they making enough money?

They got the money from all the expansions they sold. Then they made several outfits and gliders and 4 sets of weapons. None of these new cosmetics are ingame rewards from doing content. They couldn’t have put added one of those sets of weapons as an mob drop or from chests from doing content? Not one glider from doing content?

I’m all for them making money. Don’t mistake that. But a game based on cosmetics should make sure that there is some sort of equality between gameplay rewards and gemstore purchases.

Businesses are in business to make money Flesh, as such no, they are never making enough money. Besides, they have bills to pay, and just because they brought in (essentially) a one time chunk of funds, doesn’t mean that’s going to last. The gemstore is simply their ‘steady’ income stream.

They couldn’t have put added one of those sets of weapons as an mob drop or from chests from doing content? Not one glider from doing content?

I said essentially the same thing in my second paragraph. Some of what has gone into the store could have (should have) been directly in the game as rewards. 1 or 2 of the black lion sets. The soul river and exalted gliders. Armor is more difficult than an outfit, so I kind of understand, but I still expected more armor sets than what we presently have.

Exalted glider with the ascended backpiece would’ve been nice, but the only other backpiece that has a glider associated is the pvp legendary (and i’m sure the fractal legendary), both of which take a lot more time/effort/investment than the Illuminated collection. And if they locked that glider behind more grind, you’d get a whole new lvl of complaining from players lol.

Or there coulda been no ascended exalted backpiece, and instead just make that 2nd collection work towards the glider alone.

Yeah. I know. I’m just complaining.

It really hit me today that they put out FOUR gemstore weapon sets in this month after the release (where it’s normally one a month) plus the gliders and all we got in game was one set of (ugly) makeshift weapons and no gliders. The release of new cosmetics is really unbalanced and weighed towards the gemstore. it’s grindy and/or costly to get any new skins in this cosmetic based expansion.

Lets not forget:

  • Appearance packages – Because your ten bucks isn’t good enough and you need to buy a bunch of bundled stuff just to get the one thing you want. This reeks of profiteering. These are not bundled deals. They are bundles specifically designed to make the things in them derive a higher amount of cash per purchase.
  • Glider skins – Despite the fact that gliders are one of the major features of the expansion, at launch there were literally zero ingame ways to obtain skins for the glider. Now there are a few legendaries and a MASSIVE number of gem store skins, several of which were sold in the gem store on the day of release This is like releasing a new weapon type with only one skin. It’s frustrating in a game where stat acquisition is the primary reward model, but absolutely intolerable in a game where the primary reward model is cosmetics.
  • Revnant – Revnant is an excuse to add a bullet point to the expansion, despite adding nothing compelling to the game. The rev’s legend swapping mechanics create a class that flies directly in the opposite direction of what players wanted from GW2 by creating a new class with even less build customization options than existing classes. On top of that it is used as the platform for several tech upgrades for new skill types, and includes a bunch of mechanics that would have added a ton of value if they were in stead utilized and deployed as second elite specs for existing classes. Legend swapping is a horrible mechanic that plays like bashing an elementalist over the head until he forgets half of his class mechanics. its is overly limited and the copious amount of recharge times on the skills and the refill of energy on legend swap make the energy mechanics pointless. Revnant is a poorly designed class with some cool abilities. Revn needs at least twice as many legends, baseline, to come close to the build diversity of other classes, and needs a complete overhaul of its energy mechanics if they’re meant to actually make the class feel different to play.
  • Elite specs – Elite specs are designed to be horizontal and choice based, however that horizontal choice based system doesn’t work when there are not choices. Elite specs are a great design for further content, but absolutely meaningless in function when their initial release doesn’t include at least two.

Okay, back in March? I think we were told new armors weren’t going to be released in store but earnable in game, only outfits will be added to the gem shop. Now that would require new content to be added to the game that had armor as a reward. Now we got some new armor with HoT but other than raids, which will eventually allow you to craft legendary armor, we haven’t gotten any new content.

The Gem Shop on the other hand is fairly independent to content release and can have outfits dropped when ever.

I’m not a fan of the $25 bundles. So much for the micro in microtransaction. Also not happy about Sabetha, the final boss in this raid wing, being a Gem Shop mini rather than a raid reward like virtually every other boss or minor boss in the raid.

ANet needs to understand that Difficult Group Content should have rewards that reflect completing that content and can only be acquired doing that content. The pattern of boss and minor boss being minis is broken by letting anyone have Sabetha.

Sorry for the side rant.

We are heroes. This is what we do!

This is a serious irritation for me, simply because I was spoiled by the amount of selection you got in each GW1 campaign/expansion. Yes I know gw1 is gone, but still see here at the new options each addon campaign/expac brought:

Prophecies
Factions
Nightfall
EOTN

Keep in mind that in GW1 each class had its own armor. Necros couldn’t wear Ele armor and so on. Each elite armor for each class had a radically different design than other classes in the same armor weight from the same vendor. So if you had 1 elite armors for 10 classes at just that one vendor, that’s a whole new radically different 10 armor skin sets in the game from just that location, even if they did reuse models with skin edits like EOTN . And then you’d have 3-4 vendors for “elite” armor sets to skin out each char and special single glove and helmet skins. And that doesn’t include the non-elite skins.

For there to be so few armor sets in Heart of Thorns when classes in the same armor class can use the same skins is just lazy. For you to release 5 gem store outfits thereafter is just ….

I don’t buy this clipping excuse for outfits while we have a lack of new Armors/armor skins either. Its a cop out. We have wardrobes for a reason. Does something clip? Swap it out for another piece in the wardrobe. If it clips with your hair just gold to gems and hairstyle kit. A bad excuse is no excuse.

Well… considering that there are vanilla armor skins that still don’t fit quite properly with others or that clip, I’d say nope. The arguments about skins and outputs (including the “no capes due to clipping” – even though it could be a cultural back piece) are kinda not convincing. Some people couldn’t even care less about mild clipping (who else downloaded the cape mods for Skyrim as soon as they came out?).

Been there, punned that.

I’m not bothered because I don’t care about cosmetic that much.

I do find it insulting people are complaining about the 50$ expansion.

Maybe GW2 was advertised as a casual game for cheap players(buy to play), so it lured too many casual and cheap players who complain about everything.

I think you’re missing the point entirely.

There is a distinct lack of earnable armor sets, weapon sets, backpieces and glider skins.

Back items are the one thing they did give us plenty of (3 each for the orders, two exalted-themed ones, Bough of Melandru, the multiple levels of fractal and esports wings. Also Radiant and Hellfire back items, and the scribe backpacks).

He really like armor piece. And think for 50$ there should be more armor piece?

The expansion is only released a while ago. Dont’ worry, there will be more outfit in the gem store.

I’m just saying try to play subsciprtion games. Look at their forum and no one complain about pricing and they need to pay monthly fee. I dont’ know why people play GW2 complain about price so much.

A huge reason I play GW2 is there is no subscription. And the gem store is not as pushy as some other mmorpg I played. People should already felt luxury they dont’ need to pay as much as other mmorpg, yet they keep complaining it is not enough.

Just as a comparison, the base game was in the neighborhood of $50. How many armors and weapon skins came with that $50 as compared the price of this expansion. (Not to even mention the number of maps, dungeons, etc. Just skins).

For $50 there should have been more skins released. By comparison, they certainly haven’t had any problems with releasing new weapons sets and outfits in the last month in the gemstore. Just this month, 4 new weapon sets when the expansion has only one complete new set.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

Outfits are way easier to make than armor sets. Not only are they a single piece where clipping issues don’t have to be considered at all, but they also don’t come in three different weights. Not to say that the lack of armor sets in HoT wasn’t disappointing, because it is one of the aspects of the expansion that majorly disappointed me. There should have been at least been 1 armor set for every new zone. In addition having full armor sets for every elite spec would have been a major treat and a good throwback to GW1 where there was profession-specific armor. Even if the new spec armors turned out to be wearable by other professions, it would still be nice to have these themed armors. I was also surprised that PvP didn’t get a new armor set, even though I don’t bother with that game mode at the moment.

Then there is also the issue with the old PvP armor sets which haven’t yet returned. They already exist and I don’t see why it’s taking them so long to figure out a way to bring them back. They are seriously content that requires little effort to put in the game.

My only gripes with the gem store is the large amount of recent weapon skins and the bundles. The post-HoT TP weapons are almost as many as the new in-game ones now and soon they will surpass them in amount. The bundles also force you to buy the entire thing just for one component, and even though I haven’t really wanted any of the new bundle outfits I can still understand the problem.

I can only agree with you. In fact I made a short comparison a while back along similar lines. Basically, ANet has eihter a lot more work to do to get armours out, or they simply dont allocate resources because it doesn’t provide more income.

In GW1 each new campaign added some 6 armour sets per profession per gender. Thats 120 (6×10×2) new armour sets by the time they got to Elona. Sure, some where reskins, but that is no different in GW2.

In GW2 the armour sets for Sylvari, Human and Norn are shared (Scaled). Charr seems to be scaled as wel, but perhaps with more clipping issues so lets count that one as well. Then they need to adjust for the Asura. But even then the base design is already in place, so making the models is what remains. So thats 3 armours to design.
Then they have armour classes, so each of the three armour class professions share the new skins. This means per class you only need one set, reducing the amount of work.

So that means that one armour set (bladed for example) needs 3x design for armour classes, 3x design for races, 2x for gender, but only for 1/3x professions. That means that one design set for a complete line requires 3 × 3 × 2 × 1/3 = 6 sets to design for 9 professions. Thats 1.5 per profession, as a comperative metric.

With the current 4 unique sets (correct me if I missed one) that translates to 6 designs added in terms of workload from Anet. For all genders, races and professions.
Now i get that having multiple races introduced issues with clipping and the complexity has increased as well compared to GW1.
But even then, 6 design workload as part on an ‘expansion’ is rather thin. The original launched with dozens of armours to choose from. Dungeon sets, karma sets, crafted sets, racial sets etc etc.. Sure that took time to make as well, but comparativly…

So, Tl:dr: Comparitively very few new armours for the expansion.

Aren’t they making enough money?

It’s just that….

It feels like all work and no play to get new armors and the new weapons/gliders are from the gems store. There’s none just handed to you except one set of basic looking weapons.

They couldn’t have made new green armors as a mob drop or buy with karma or crafted with the new ingredients? Added a nice set or two of green weapons from a mob drop or in the event chests or karma? They did add one set of weapons, true. But other than that it’s all a major grind to get. Very little are free, easy to get drops to sweeten the time while you’re working for the hard to get items.

What they’ve put in the expansion is too skimpy and behind too many walls. The ones that came after the expansion have a price tag.

You’re aware that I’m not disagreeing with you, yes?

Hiding a set behind the new karma vendor’s could have been fun, missing opportunity for them them. Though I suppose they could still do it.

Yeah.

OK, just had to check.

Yeah, I understand. While I have no issue with them having glider skins in the store (and let’s face it, we all were pretty much in agreement months ago that they were something Anet could (and would) monetize and it wouldn’t be a huge deal), it would be nice to have a couple earnable via play. Sort of similar to how they introduced the hex outfit. Its only been a month though, so there’s nothing saying we won’t see such things added as rewards for game play. (Yes, I’m trying to stay positive, but sometimes its hard)

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

As of today they don’t care enough to respond to these things, but we’ll see how much they care when numbers start dropping sharply. It’s been a complete imbalance of what is given and how much is taken since the expansion launched. I know money needs to be made but you also need to give back for the money paid. It is monetization at it’s worst and they are testing the limits of their player base but in the meantime many players will reach theirs and move on.
Someone there needs to know that balance is required to keep the game healthy because the continuous plugging of the gem store vs. little given in the game is wearing thin on a lot of people.
