LOL learn your facts first please. Like someone already said, ToR had a lot more servers then GW2.

TOR released with 103 servers, according to information I’ve located online. It’s down to 20 servers as of this date, less than GW2 and less than other competitors such as Rift and Aion.

GW2 released with 52. And still has that many.

Maybe next time, before shooting your mouth off, do a little internet research to make sure you know what you’re talking about, ya?

Ummm, Rift only has 18 Servers …. and Aion has 5 North American (basicly international) servers total. (there are more localized Aion Korean/Japanese/Chinese one but they have limited access)

Tera only has 3 servers and I think last time I looked Lineage 2 (again outside of asia) only has 3 or 4 ..

Huh, should’ve checked more recently. Rift had more than 20 last time I looked. And Aion’s running on a different server scheme though, IIRC, which explains the small count. Each ‘server’ is really several.

But meh, minor point retracted nonetheless.

That said, my primary point remains valid. SWTOR started with over 100, and has fallen to less than 20% of that original figure. Trying to argue the “but it had so many servers” angle is relatively meaningless when you consider that their dropoff in terms of percentages is really quite terrible.

And I didn’t comment on either Tera or Lineage 2’s server counts, if you read more carefully, so not sure why you brought them up. Is it because I stated that SWTOR’s population is now closer to competing with them (which is factually true)? Because there’s a difference between “number of servers” and “number of players”, you know.

Remember when our developers talked about “strengthening the core game”?
How’d that work out for us so far?
Now let’s try some ideas that will really work.

BTW everyone. People are reporting that not a single server is FULL right now. Go transfer or join whatever server you want. Quick.

Cheers.

Seeing as its Christmas soon and Christmas means game sales, they’re probably going to increase the server number or capacity soon. Well, they should anyway. I have no idea if they’re actually planning on it.

All very true, I just mentioned the other two as they are still listed as being “top 10” MMO’s games out there as a comparison. It’s interesting to see games as old as Everquest (1999) running with 12+ server still.. though as you state you never know how many people are on them.

and also consider more modern games are build to take advantage of the latest chips, think back to when EQ wa released the fastest computer was the single core Pentium III – 733 (I think) .. I was playing on a Celeron 300 with a original TnT card .. with (16 megs on it!)

Im sure more modern games such as GW2 can handle many more people on them even compared to games just released 3 or 4 years ago.

Yeah I logged, in, went “Holy crap!” and transferred, and got a network error message and was like OH DAMN did it go through?

It did.

I’m happy now, and it looks like GW2 isn’t going to face a crisis soon. Maybe they were holding back and when things looked a bit too close for comfort they went ahead and added some server power. Who knows?

At least I got what I wanted.

6 servers Very High, 18 servers Full… and oceans of empty space, with no one in it.

How is this possible?

For this very reason I am finding PVE a boring grind. I am in an area where I need help. No hench or hero in GW2 so I need people, obviously. In 3 hours not a single word in the chat box nor did I see a single player, on a “full server”. Every town is deserted because you dont HAVE to go to them anymore for trading etc making them pointlessly huge. The dynamic events are a pain in the backside beacause you cant do most of them on your own and they have a habbit of popping up right where you are trying to get a vista or the like and again, no one around to enjoy the events with.
Imho GW2 needs some serious reworking as people just are not playing it.
As much as I enjoy the game, the whole point of it for me was that its an open world where people would be EVERYWHERE but they simply are not. Regardless of server capacity!

I wonder how many players treated this game like a single player RPG? (play once or twice through PvE as different race/profession then move onto the next game)

Its rather doubtful that I’ll ever play PvP or PvW modes. That sort of thing just does not interest me.

At the rate I’m going I’m not sure I’ll get another run before the new Tomb radier comes out let along when Crysis3 comes out. Ether way, by Feb ‘13 it more than likely that I’ll be playing something else.

Arenanet response that server population is tied to accounts registered to that server:

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Server-Populations/first#post703192

It fluctuates because people switch server either very late, or very early.

This can’t be used as an argument because this is why overflow servers were made. If they are in place it shouldn’t matter how many dead accounts are on a server. Server pop should be directly related to players logged in concurrently not accounts.

This is Anets way to keep server pops balanced… it will go away…. the game is still new and the first year is always the roughest.

The overflow is map based, not server based.

You join the overflow if the map is full, not if the server’s concurrent connection has been reached.

Please read the official anet answer here:

https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Server-Populations/first#post703192

Sorry but you’re wrong. The overflow system is for the map that is on that specific home server and activates when there is high concurrency in that map on that server. This is why if I play on JQ and you play on HoD we cannot play on the same map unless we are on overflow. The whole purpose of the overflow system was designed to compensate for high concurrency on a server.

The servers maximum population was set to preserve the player experience by ensuring there were enough players to play with but not too many to deplete system resources and cause lag/crashes/ etc. It doesn’t matter if the number of players on a server reaches it’s limit if only 20% (random number) of that population is playing concurrently. This is a conservative approach by Anet just in case 100% of the population of a server comes back at the same time (probably like this Friday). At any rate I am not saying Anet is wrong for that approach, but I do agree with the consensus here that it is hurting the game.

So to everyone please read and understand the entire post. This is a valid issue and 10 pages of debate slows down the process for the devs to fix it. If you don’t agree that is fine but at least get you’re facts straight before starting a debate.

Not trying to be a dick, just saying.

Thanks

Pretty sure you’re wrong here, yes it’s based on active players to send you into the overflow. However that has nothing to do with a server saying full.I’m on a full server and can log in and go about my merry way however,if I go to LA I’m sent to an overflow.

You know what’s really interesting here? It’s that I always go to overflow for 20-30 seconds and then can rejoin my own server.Hmmmnn, how can that be?If they’re always sending to overflow it kinda sounds like they may be trying to control the load in LA.Makes sense, does it not?

At this point there is no doubt that server pop is account based and not online based.I mean why are so many zones pretty empty on a full server? This includes LA as I’ve even went there and barely witnessed anyone…yet it was full!! Yea right!!

We’ve established from this and many other threads that bojangles can’t stand GW2. My question is, why waste time complaining here when you could be playing in your belated KungkittenPandaland knock off? Alright, we GET it. You hate GW2, but stop making up negative statistics to back up your own opinions, and maybe go play a game you DO like. No offense, but geez….

They increased server caps so people could move to previously full servers.

Nearly all the servers in the US were full prior to that so lots of people could not join their friends.

It was a nice move, helped a lot of people I guess.

Well, I see no one in most zones AND LA on a full server. So where do go from this?
TBH as a PVE player it really is a solo game for me. Infact most of the time I forget I am even playing online.
I still enjoy the game but as ive said before I simply cant progress in areas where I need help from other players when there simply is no one around. I find this hugely frustrating.

Right now we have most showing “very high” with four showing “high” and one showing medium.

Increasing capacity is draining the lower populated servers (the six previously showing very high) of players – mainly because people are looking for others to play alongside. It is a problem that will only become more pronounced as more people transfer – and new players choose – the more populated realms.

We need server merges or “underflow” servers soon – really soon. It isnt an indication that anything is failing – its just part of the natural progression of any MMO – and it’s time.

I know my world feels more and more dead every week. I really dont want to transfer because a. I like the people who have chosen to stay and b. I dont want to be a part of the bigger problem.

We really need server merges.
