About 2 months ago I made 7 precursors in the Mystic Forge over the course of one month and ended up walking away 400g richer with my own legendary.

It is a risk, there are no guarantees! There are stories of some people putting enormous amounts of rares into the forge with no luck, but imo the odds of getting a precursor from the forge are highly underrated.

How I did it:

• Buy cheap rare weapons of any type: spears, tridents, focus, hammers, w/e. I put in buy orders at ~17s or less. (this is the most tedious part of the process as your buy orders will get overbid fairly quickly)
• Any combination in the forge as long as the item level totals 300 (80+80+80+60 or 78+62+80+80 or 74+76+74+76, etc.) Just make sure they are not 4 of the same type unless you are going for that specific precursor.
• Sell resulting exotics including any precursors you do not want. Do not forge the exotics!
• Eliminate 5% listing fee by selling to highest bidder by setting the sell price at 1c above vendor price. This eliminates the risk of being undercut as well. (ofc only do this if the highest bid price less 10% TP fee is acceptable)

I first heard about this method from a guildy that would link a precursor in gchat every few days or so. We teased him about his extraordinary luck and he would tell us he didn’t know why everyone didn’t use this method to make gold. This has since been replicated by myself and enough people in my guild to convince me that the risk is moderate enough to warrant the reward.

The idea behind this approach is to ‘fund’ the research with selling the exotics and unwanted precursors until you hit a bigger payoff. Cheap rares reduce the risk, I reduced the cost of each attempt further by selling any high priced rares I got from the forge such as greatswords. On average I would do 4-5 attempts to get an exotic, most exotics are dirt cheap these days but some have very desirable skins. Again, DO NOT FORGE THE EXOTICS!

As for me, who throw in 200 rare to the mystic forge and didn’t even get a exotic, all I can say is RNG likes you. (and RNG hates me)

I have been running this experiment for a while as well, but on a smaller scale. I have data to support that an average item level of 74 results in item level 80 exotics. I have yet to see a precursor, but my gut is telling me that it could happen.

Everything in the OP is excellent for helping anyone who wants to give the mystic forge a shot.

And this is why I play Diablo 3.

Actually, it’s not that amazing. Reading past thread titles is apparently a Herculean feat for most posters.

I have played around with the Forge a bit, but nothing serious. I haven’t had good luck, but I haven’t tracked my results either, so I am relying on memory.

After reading this I bought some crap:

10 level 72 Rare Shields
10 level 78 Rare Spearguns
10 level 74 Rare Axes
10 level 76 Rare Torches

I put one of each in 10 times, with the total being 300 each time and the average 75. My first 10 tries I got 4 exotics and 6 rares. The rares were all 80’s but i put them back in and got another Exotic.

Exotics:

Rampager’s Pearl Trident
Charzooka
Eir’s Short Bow
Maw of the kitten ed
Blastmaster 3000

Rares I didn’t put back:

Cleric’s Rifle of Ice
Cleric’s Staff of Air

No idea if I will try again, but if everything sells at the price I am asking I will be tripling my $$.

4 white greatswords got Dusk 1st try. Too easy, got bored, deleted it.

Tried again and got 1 Exotic. Recombined 8 of the Rares I got and got more rares.

Warning: Results may vary.

Until we can see some hard numbers coming out from at least 100,000 rares put into the forge, I don’t think anyone can claim thakittens a good method to make money.

7 precursors in 10 days

I can tell you exotic forging is the best way to go for pre. I’ve forged the same gold cost of rares and got none back.

This ‘system’ is what I have been doing with rares for over 6 months with no luck. No ‘system’ will balance the process BECAUSE it’s RNG.

For the most part now I have given up on a legendary, putting only rares i find into the Mystic toilet. Blind luck or TP Flip are your ways to a precursor.

Congratulations, you are lucky, there is nothing legendary about this.

I gave hundreds of rares to the Mystic thief and got nothing but rares or next to worthless exotics. Definitely not worth the money I put in. RNG is a kitten kitten and she hates me. Gratz on your lucky streak but I know many are hoping that you ckoke on that legendary.
