The game needs it badly but instead we get new ridiculously priced items (with juicy RNG) in gem store. Look at Skyrim for example, not only the game looks significantly better (modded of course) but in same amount of time they’ve achieved ~double frame rate. Time to optimize gw2, this is not a looker like Crysis 3 and should run waaay better than it is.

this is important though. do i and many many MANY others with gaming rigs want to run the game at 18fps in wvw even if your settings are set to minimum? If their game was amazing looking like the witcher 2 and had as many players in wvw as we do then a 20fps is probably all you could achieve but gw2 graphics are,,,,,, mmo textures…

I doubt it’s going to get much more optimized. It’s built off of an old engine in DX9. I’m actually amazed it runs as well as it does sometimes.

in my opinion it’s kind of well optimized. I was able to run it on my old AcerAspire 5742G laptop no problem. I was able to run a new and improved MMO on a laptop (on medium settings, 720p, but still).
Now the problem with it is not the optimization, but glitches. Example: me and my boyfriend essentially have the same setup, except my GPU is older than his. I’m able to run in in 1080p 80FPS no problem, after recent updates his FPS however got broken and sometimes now falls to 30 FPS. Having in mind that his PC is the same as mine, except GPU is never I would say that the game probably glitches out with the GPU that he has.

metro 2033 is an old game. My laptop can handle it O_o. Can you handle high performance games that came out this year? Lara Croft? Crysis 3? Because Guild Wars 2 has highly improved graphics and is an MMO which in itself is very demanding. It also came out in 2012, not in 2010 (which is when metro came out). Then compare it to other MMOs that came out on the same year – how well can you run, for example, Terra?
edit: what game is TW2? I googled it, I don’t have it on my steam and have no idea what it is. I’m curious.

I’m constantly fiddling with the graphics and my 3 year old comp run everything at max at around 35-60FPS depending on the area. It’s only zergs in WvW that bring me to <20. I find the biggest drop in FPS for graphic settings comes from “Use best texture filtering”. When it comes to the culling settings, the quantity of detailed model settings actually gets me a bigger boost than the number of players shown.

Are you serious? Metro 2033 is in the top three most demanding games out now, yes, 2013… Tomb Raider all maxed without stupid stressfx runs at 50fps+ (this is far from a demanding game lol this is a console port…), crysis 3 maxed (shaders/shadows on high instead of Ultra tho) ran at 43-60 fps. TW2 is The Witcher 2, best looking third person game available in 2013 even though is a 2010 game (looks a gen ahead of crappy tomb raider 2013). I’m playing with a gtx570@ core 920 and i5 2500k@4.3… i shouldn’t be playing gw2 at ~15fps on the lowest possible settings in wvw.

Right now running around LA I get 125 FPS in performance, 30 in appearance, 35 in Auto. Aion seemed much more greedy hardware wise than this. But my wife plays on a Dell from around 2005, and she doesn’t have problems with the game. And that computer is as powerful as a tracfone :P

And the game itself uses about 1.8gb/16gb of ram while I’m running it.

There’s no such things. It could happen when your drivers are outdated, that’s it. Mine aren’t and the reason why gw2 runs so poorly is because its almost 100% cpu dependent, which is extremely stupid and the reason why the game runs at same fps (in zergs) no matter what settings your game is at. This is what needs to be addressed and in 8 months we got absolutely nothing, nothing to the point of not even mentioning later this year optimization.

I don’t understand why all of your examples are non-MMOs. You can’t compare the two. I played SWTOR for a while and I was getting bad performance at max settings and if there were more than 20 people on screen the game would run like the 100+zergs in GW2. WoW had pretty good performance but the engine is so old and the graphics aren’t very detailed that it doesn’t really tax modern PCs. It does have culling even though it does it more subtly than GW2. There’s also no areas in WoW where you would have such a large number of players running around casting. I haven’t played in a few years but raids were only up to 25 players. The only place I would imagine a large congregation of players would be the hub cities.

it’s true, can’t compare MMOs with single player games like Skyrim for MMO specification needs to cater to the majority of gamers. However if I use Aion as comparison, Aion’s graphics and FPS is better.

This engine is still buggy as hell in its hardware detection and usage.
I´m about to do a core hardware upgrade from AMD (PhenomII 965) to Intel(3570k), and if this crappy & buggy performance still persists this game will be dead to me.

Plain and simple.

@HawkMeister.

You might be dissapointed then. I’m running on i73770k, GTX680, SSD,16GB gaming ram. GW2’s performance (all settings on full specs) is still poor IMO because of its engine.

Could you elaborate on “poor”? Like, what exactly do you notice performance wise that causes you to believe you have performance issues? My specs are in my signature, obviously some of us are not the majority as far as our pc’s, but there’s nothing wrong with lower end. Just curious what you categorize as poor.

Also to the others who are comparing GW2 (an MMO) to single player games-stop it. Naught people, just don’t. :P

I would love to see the difference though when PVE no longer has culling. Then we could truly see how much the game takes as far as resources.

Aions graphics were definitely more complex, and I did get good fps there. But that game is a huge resource hog… I read from wiki I think that GW2’s engine was a highly modified version of gw1. Granted this was probably cheaper, but in the long run they may have decreased the ability to optimize it very much beyond what it is. I mean could you imagine FFXIV using the same setup as FFXI…. But since you played Aion as well you probably remember when they did the hmm.. 2.0? Update or maybe 3.0 where they upped the graphics engine or something? Was that to an entirely different or upgraded engine? Or just a tweak? I ask because I wonder if GW2 could do the same. Not trying to get too much aion-age in the thread, but I think it is still relevant http://gameguide.na.aiononline.com/aion/Advanced+Graphics+Engine shows the type of advanced options the other NCsoft game had. PS from reading looks like it was 2.5 patch.

And Aion was running on crytek 2 engine which is superior at that time. Yes and they recently moved to 3.0 not long ago and still running on the same engine with optimization on the game.

therefore again IMO, gw2 client is poor in comparison as i get low fps in WvW and events where there are alot of players on my rig’s specs.

GW2 also needs the basic options like particle effect density slide bar, because half the time you can’t even see what a boss is doing much less get decent frame rates around a big group.

Thanks for the heads up. As I´ve gone for an i5 my performance should be slightly(I hope) worse than that.
But at least it seems to be playable, unlike now where I get single digits while in the middle of a Dragon Event(or near a kitten Molten Alliance Portal (what the kittendroppings is up with that ANet?!)).

Yes they did and are using their own engine.

IMO, it’s not only their engine but their client as well. If you have not noticed, it’s only 1 file, done so by Anet to prevent hacking (so they said, yet there are fly hacks and bots). The 1 file takes up more read resource and stores up alot of temp data. A friend of mine cleared his and he has cleared 500MB worth of it from GW2 alone.

I’m waiting on Blade and Soul (US) to be released…can’t wait. I’m already someone semi quiting gw2.

Yes they added somewhat less braindead collision detection. But their MAIN graphics optimization isn´t even done in house but by those Icelanders from UMBRA.
And the kitten Occlusion Culling is clearly broken in this game, as the last 8 months in the Tech Support Board has proven.

Lowering resolution helps too.

lol you’re suggesting to lower rez (from only 1080p) in 2013 o.O . I’m not playing on a Dell pc from bestbuy lol lowering rez should NEVER be an option.

Most people still don’t even have a high definition monitor with their PC’s, you do realize this? If your computer can’t handle the resolution, I would say it IS an option :P

No lol i can handle games like metro 2033 (without DoF) or TW2 (without ubersampling) maxed out, gw2 shouldn’t even be a question. The large majority of people using their pc’s to game are on 1080p screens.

metro 2033 is an old game.

I’m playing with a gtx570@ core 920 and i5 2500k@4.3… i shouldn’t be playing gw2 at ~15fps on the lowest possible settings in wvw.

it must be one of those glitches I was talking about then. When PC is far beyond the requirements, but for some reason game runs slower than it would on a calculator. I don’t really think that such hardware miss-matches will be fixed though.

This is what needs to be addressed and in 8 months we got absolutely nothing, nothing to the point of not even mentioning later this year optimization.

then it totally makes sense that while using the same CPU, the same drivers and operating system I get a better frame rate than my bf that has a newer GPU. Thank you for explaining it! IT also makes sense how some games after updates break completely on new systems and work fine on old ones!
Really incompatibility with a certain GPU and CPU does happen.
