Q:
A very experienced player told me( a very inexperienced player ) a very shocking “fact”.
The cause: I was watching cutscenes in COE story.
After we finished the story dungeon one of the player told me that if I watch cutscenes in dungeons without telling anyone I will have a 90% chance of getting kicked out of the dungeon.
So I did some math.
I ran about 30 to 40 dungeons so far and I been kicked maybe 3 times because I was low level, but none of those times are about watching the movie.
So I told this lovely friend that his math is wrong and its not correct to say that I have a 90% chance of getting kicked because i was watching movie.
The reaction I get from him is that I am an achivement point 1000 new player and I should not claim to be a expert.
We started to debat about it and I dont feel like loseing the battle :P
So, here I am, seeking justice on the fourm.
Post your thoughts your.
Peace.

A:
I played some time with my mule account (bought at the sale 2 months ago), which now has approx. 1700 account points. Did dungeons, did fractals up to level 19. Completely with PUGs.
I was not kicked once and did not see any other party member even requested to be kicked. And there were quite some members who had not much experience and it was clear they completed their first dungeons ever.
Everyone waited patiently for anyone who watched a video, was disconnected and tried to reconnect or requested a break to go to the restroom. Or had problems with skipping mobs in dungeons, dying on the path.
Of course I did not join groups where the description in the lfg tool invited impatient players. (“zerk only, exp only, gear check, 5000+AP, fast run” – avoid this like the plague)
90% of statistic are made up by people’s mind and perception, not by actual testing.
Yeah I know my statistic is made up too :P
However I do understand people tend to exaggerate stuffs base on their perception.
Your “very experienced player” friend probably knows the game well but not much else. He couldn’t possibly know what percentage of kicked players were kicked for cutscene watching.
I’m sorry for being the meanie here, but I couldn’t resist:
“if you were watching movies while in a dungeon, instead of playing in the actual dungeon, I would kick you too”
I think you meant cutscenes, story, etc. Those are really not movies
I thought you meant movie movies, like something on Netflix, and was rather confused since no one would even know if you’re watching something…
I wish people realized it is the amount and quality of what you have played rather than AP! Your “friend” doesn’t know the percent, and its fine to watch the cut scenes!
No offense broski but i’d totally kick you if I saw you watch the movie. Do you know how important my life is and how much I could get done in the 30 seconds I have to wait for you to finish? Like seriously bro, you have no idea, I could be like, curing cancer and kitten in that time if only you would stop watching dem movies. I mean youre at 1000 ap, you should know by now that dungeon runs are serious kitten by now, seriously.
Reagrdless of what percentage of getting kicked for watching the cutscene, one thing that that person said was correct. Watching cut scenes without letting the party know does result in a chance to get kicked. It’s just polite to do so. Some players don’t care, others make a big deal about it. If you are running the dungeon the first time, at the very least you should put that in the LFG, or let the party know this is your first time, and ask if its ok if you watch the cutscenes.
There are many people who don’t mind taking a noob. These groups fill up FAST on the LFG thats why you don’t see many of them, unless you are watching it. I myself prefer noobs over those who consider themselves experts. The few things that bother me about having noobs are that they don’t let the party know that it’s their first time, the don’t ask to watch the scenes (again I don’t mind, but it’s nice to do thats what they are doing), and don’t listen to whats going on in chat.
If you are a noob. LET YOUR TEAMMATES KNOW!!
watch chat, pay attention, and ask if you don’t know what to do.
Do these things, and you’ll have a much better time in dungeons.
He means he will vote to kick people 90% of the time for doing that…
Like a lot of people, he’s projecting his own feelings onto everyone else.
For example: “I know I secretly hate gerbils, so I’m going to say everyone hates gerbils.”
(I don’t hate gerbils, secretly or otherwise, BTW)

Oh, come on…
You have to ask permission to watch the cutscenes?
No, the answer is to not join anything that mentions “zerker”, or “speedrun” ever.
Other than that, your only other potential issues will be long lectures on how to build, what to wear, where to skip, where to stack, which (melee – forget ranged) weaps to use etc..
Doesn’t sound like too much fun, does it?
Actually, maybe the answer is just to not do GW2 dungeons, at all.
If you don’t join LFGs you don’t belong to, you won’t get kicked.
If you join LFGs you don’t belong to, you will get kicked.
Watching cutscenes falls into that as well.
how the kitten do you have 1k achievment points? i got my thief to level 80 like a week ago and i only have 700…
In theory, no one should be kicked for watching cutscenes in dungeons. They are put in for a reason, and they are not all that long.
In practice, you might get kicked if you watch the cutscenes, particularly if you have some impatient jerks in your group or if you joined an LFG listing asking for experienced players. The best thing you can do to avoid being kicked is either create your own LFG saying you aren’t skipping cutscenes, or “all welcome” or “fun run” or something to that effect. Also, just be honest up-front with your party that you have never watched the cutscenes and would like to see them.
These are on a roll lately eh?

No you don’t have to ask. But its the polite thing to do. If you do ask, and are told no, than that group isnt for you.
Ive had many a pleasant and enjoyable runs with new players where everyone is cool. “How is that possible!?” You may ask. Well, because the noob wasn’t a heel, respected the groups time, and let us know they were new.
And yes. Dont join groups you don’t meet the requirements for. That’s a given.
I think that there is nothing wrong with watching cutscenes because that is the way you are supposed to run dungeons. I will admit it does annoy me a bit if I am in a hurry, but I would never vote to kick anyone because of it because it is not harming the group in any way (except one of those zerker speedrun groups, which an inexperienced player probably wouldn’t want to join anyways). However if the group asks you to not watch cutscenes you should probably stop, just as they should let you watch them if you ask in advance. To stop any chance of being kicked, you should make your own group and say you are watching cutscenes. That way everybody is happy to be in your group.

No, it’s not polite, it’s ridiculously subservient.
If I joined a (non speedrun type) group, I would never require anyone to tell me they intended to watch the cutscenes.
It’s completely up to them if they want to.
…and BTW, I consider it extremely impolite to describe a fellow player as a “noob”, so I guess politeness is very much in the eye of the beholder?
To me, you are the impolite one, especially as a more experienced player, calling people “noobs” and requiring them to ask you for permission to play their game the way they like.

I do not kick unless ppl are completely ignoring my LFG, but I’ll be frank.
I did AC 900 times now, and I really do not like the wait anymore. I do make exceptions
If you are in a lvl 80 EXP group you have seen them cause you are experienced, so you should have done this dungeon a few times before and I will second a kick, cause I can understand why
If you are in a speedrun group anything that will slow the ppl down annoys them. I will second a kick, cause I can understand why
For Zerk or Zerk Meta I do not care, as they only state gear requirements not speed.
I did a lvl 80 zerk run yesterday CoF 1 and 2 and they had 3800 AP combined, but they were zerks, but were inexperienced and/or firsttimers, I got all kinds of pings of armor and gear while I didn’t even ask… I do not mind waiting the 2 minutes in such a case. I only have 17.5 k Ap though…
If I’m in an open group I’ll carry you and I do not care if you need the whole run just to watch movies. you do whetever you want, it’s open. I had ppl starting a roleplay on me a while ago, which was a new experience.
When i want to watch the cutscenes, i put up my own LFG with “watching cutscenes” in the description. Doesn’t come as a surprise that way, and you get people who don’t mind, or who want to watch them too.
For story, they should made the same change for all story paths that they are doing for Arah.
For explorables, there should be an NPC at the start that will allow people to replay all cutscenes of the paths they have completed today.
kicked for watching a cutscene? pff casuals these days… i’d have you kicked for opening your inventory for longer than 5 sec.
In a story dungeon, it should be reasonably foreseeable that someone might want to watch cutscenes. I don’t think people mind as much there. In fact, I feel kind of sad when doing a story dungeon with players who haven’t done it before, and they just instantly skip everything.
In an explorable, otoh, the expectation is that you’re not watching cutscenes. In that case, it’s only polite to put it in the LFG or inform the other players from the start.
Just explain at the start of the dungeon you’d like to watch cutscenes, or make your own lfg party and make sure the description says you want to watch cutscenes.
I’m always happy to wait for people watching cutscenes
77% of all made up Statistics contain the #7.
Another bit of bad game design, what was wrong with the GW1 system?
Kicking for watching in story mode should be reportable
77% of all made up Statistics contain the #7.
I don’t think that can be true, because at least 50% of them contain the #9.
(I could have said 99% of them do, but I’m too honest)

I’m sure it’s a very statistically important number, in some way.
Has to be.

You seem to be misunderstanding me.
Again, it’s not REQUIRED to ask permission to watch cutscenes. It’s just polite to do so. I don’t have an issue with it at all. If you want to watch the scenes. Go for it. But I would expect at least some sort of courtesy when doing so. At the very least a “this is my first time here, I’m going to watch the scenes.” It’s a sign of respect. That you respect the groups time, and a show of consideration. Just as I would do, and expect the rest of the team to do, when doing anything. From stacking in a certain spot or not, using things like Shadow Refuge to skip certain parts, or doing encounters in a certain way. You don’t just pop SR without telling anyone and expecting everyone to stack on you. It’s communication. And it’s common courtesy. Being polite is in no way being subserviant. In this setting, it’s an acknowledgement that you are inexperienced with this content, that it’s your first time here, and that you respect the teams time. If being polite and showing courtesy is being subserviant, well I’d rather be subserviant and respectful, than a jerk…thats just me though….
As far as my use of the word “Noob”.
I don’t use it, or mean it, in a derogerty manner. It simply means “New Player” or “Inexperienced”.
There is nothing wrong with being new or inexperienced. We ALL were at some point. I myself, although am an experienced player, am still a noob in certain things. I’ve never done Triple Trouble. In that encounter I am a total noob. Of course some people have taken it to mean “bad”, but back in the day when I first started playing online games, being a noob simply meant that you were new and/or inexperienced. Heck some of the first games I played, had an official “Noob area”, and designated players called “Noob helpers” that helped new players get started and showed them the ropes.

We also do not need permission to vote kick people.
We vote for it, that’s all.
If you don’t show respect to others, others won’t show you respect either.
Don’t complain later when you get vote kick, because you have the right to watch cutscene and not telling people you’re new, and we also have the right to get rid of you. Fair and square. If you don’t want to risk it, you should communicate first.
You will eventually get kicked from groups if they notice they have to wait longer and longer at every cutscene because of you, but it won’t happen every time you do dungeons.
Also it probably won’t ever happen at all if you make your own LFG stating you will be watching cutscenes. It’s very unlikely people would come to grief you if you were to do that. Still possible but highly unlikely.
This is unfortunately the best that Arenanet can really do to allow us to freely group up with other players and get what we want, because upper level management doesn’t feel it worth their time to focus on improving the system I guess.
