I want to offer a little feedback on the Mentor program. I’ll start with this – I think the concept is great! Having a tag that lets new players to an area know who to ask questions to is really nice and can definitely add to the community; however, as it stands, (and I think everyone’s already noticed this) it’s definitely not doing that. So here are some of the major issues I’ve found with it and some possible suggestions:

- The mentor tag is the first in the line of masteries.

I think this one speaks for itself. The biggest problem with this is that everyone and their Mini Zuzu is getting the tag and using it simply for the shiny icon above their head. It should have probably been the last thing on the mastery track, so only people who had a vested interest in earning the tag would earn it.
We’re seeing a map full of meaningless apples that are drowning out the few good apples, not to mention commanders.. which brings me to the second point.

- Compared to the commander tag, the mentor tag is lower cost -> greater visibility

You get “visibility +” compared to what a commander gets. There’s an icon over your head, it shows up on the map, AND you get a “mentor” in front of your name in chat. Where is the “Commander” title in chat? People actually trying to organize events are less visible than the mentors in chat. In my opinion, the mentor tag would have benefited from being an unlock-able addition to a commander tag. Perhaps something a commander could switch to which would change their title and add a little apple to their tag which signified “open for questions!”. I realize some people would be mad that they’d have to buy a commander tag first – but let’s be real, if you’re invested enough in the prospect of helping out, you’ll put the time in for a tag one way or another.

As of now, maps are clogged and even if you want to ignore the “bad apples” you can’t since they’re all over your map and screen. Certainly there was an influx of similar commanders when the original tags came out, and I imagine it will even out over time the same way, but remember the commander tag went up significantly in price for this exact reason!

The less tags, the more accountability one has for being a responsible leader = better game-play for everyone.

Give it a bit. It’s new and shiny. However it’s going to be as common as dirt and no prestige whatsoever. After a while people will get bored with it and turn it off.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.
