I won’t rehash the arguments for or against Commander Tags in PvE or otherwise. They have their uses, but many people find them irritating and nothing more than a kind of visual spam.

And now, of course, with the upcoming changes, there are swarms of them clogging almost every map.

The solution would be a Preference one can set so, if one wishes, one doesn’t have to see the things at all. Simple as that.

Is there really a problem that entire sections of the explorable maps are being covered by commander tags? Having trouble finding PoIs and Vistas due to them being covered? Or is this just a pointless ‘mountain out of a molehill’ kind of thing? Do we really need this ‘anti-feature feature’?

Or perhaps hidden commander tags option, only visible to other commanders. Other non-commander players cannot see this tag, unless they’re part of the squad

But then players who want to follow some commander would have to use LFG tho…

And that commanders won’t propably have time to manage all those random players.

The fact is that many Commander Tags are simply vanity items, used by players with a sense of self-importance but no real clue. And the – forced – awareness that some Blue Dorito is bumbling away on his own inconsequential business, is an irritation and a distraction.

If someone posted ‘I have 100g, I have 100g’ over and over again in Map Chat, he would obviously be Blocked if not Reported. So why not have the same discretionary blocking mechanism for the Map?

You must admit that Commander tags do have their uses, be it for champion hunting, or when zerging through WvW. Still, from my experience, there has only been 2-3 doritos present in an area and unless that number has increased to say 10 or 20, then yeah, that would be very viable.

This is good to know.

Yet I still agree with this requested feature. An option to hide commander tags when not in a WvW environment would make many happy. After all, these were/are designed for strategic planning and support in a WvW environment in the first place.

Also, as a suggestion to the developers and to further enhance the leadership abilities of the ability outside of it’s original design purpose…

Give us alternative shapes and titles that can be used to lead other world events and serve other purposes such as, for example:

New Player Assistance (Helper), for those willing to assist new players by answering questions or assisting with difficult events in the area.

Organized Role Playing (RP), Someone that’s role playing or organizing an RP event. Public chat may be in character. Subtitles for Organizer and Participant might help.

World Resource Harvesting (Farmer), follow along to learn the best routes to where all the nodes and areas are for the best in resource procurement. This could even include subtitles for specific/all nodes or npc loot harvesting for those npcs that normally drop resources or items that contain them. They would not normally be associated with any world events but may include them for efficiency’s sake.

Organized World Events Leader (Train), self explanatory and less obtrusive than map chat spam requesting train locations.

The last two, I realize, would encourage participation in activities that might be detrimental to others playing the game if done in large enough groups, but would make the activities more visible if you wish to avoid them or join them and help to keep chat less cluttered.

people dont want to see some possible kittenbag who is doing nothing but running around with their gem conversion tag, also done

Although, surely, if I’m forced to see the Tag does it not then necessarily become my business? If I had the option to turn off seeing Tags, I simply wouldn’t care so problem solved.

Commander Tags are player driven.

Wold/Map Events are game driven.

We all know how annoying some players/spammers can be and we can ignore them in chat if we wish. If the game itself annoyed us, we would simply stop playing.

should mean the same thing, you ignore a person, you completely remove them from your existence (more or less), so you “ignore” the moldy dorritos, you “hide” them from your existence, sort of

I agree that there are often people who have their commander tag on when they aren’t actually using it.

I don’t agree that it’s worth the developers time to add an option to hide commander tags.

I’ve very rarely seen more than 3 commander tags on the same map, and most of the times I have it was for a purpose (e.g. doing the Marionette or Crown Pavillion which needed 5 or 6 commanders coordinating), twice it was people deliberately switching loads on to make patterns on the map.

If it’s just one random guy it’s very easy to ignore it. Unless you’re one of those people who seem to believe that if a commander is on the map you have to follow them no matter what they’re doing or what you wanted to be doing. But that should be easy to solve by thinking for yourself.

I personally don’t get bothered at all by people with Commander tags.
I’m not checking the map 24/7 and mainly avoid the PvE zerg content, but it has been useful. For example when there is a commander, players actually know where to go/gather. No commander? Not sure if there is gonna be enough players to complete the event.

“Although, surely, if I’m forced to see the Tag does it not then necessarily become my business?”
So anything you lay your eyes upon becomes automatically your business? Must suck to watch TV.

All in all, I think this is too much nitpicking and there are statements that maaaaaaaany peeeople are irritated by it, but I think its only a small group.

it was already a short comment as was

“In addition, you agree not to do any of the following:
Impersonate any person or entity, including, but not limited to, an ArenaNet employee, or falsely state or otherwise misrepresent your affiliation with a person or entity”

technically, making it seem like i said something i didnt, by leaving the majority of it out, including the important parts, is impersonating, by making it seem i posted something i didnt

at least i admitted to it, in a slightly sarcastic way

it’s implied rather well, and if you, the person involved, doesnt get it, then you dont deserve any respect lol, youre just trying to cover your tracks, and it’s not working

you were changing the entire content of my post as well, as i had many words, and you only took 4…4 words out of 27 words….that is for all intents and purposes, changing everything, as it completely changes the view of my post

like the entire idea about the ignore button

i actually didnt change it entirely, i just left out most of it, then added something, as the word “like” is still the first word, and as you only used 4 of my 27, i used 1 of your 8, an almost fair ratio, im just doing what you did, leaving things out

My thoughts on this. If at ALL possible, Anet should look into what it would take to make the PLAYER layer of the map (the blue dots of your party, Commander Tags, etc.) be a lower priority than POIs VISTAS and WP on both Map and Mini Map as they DO often cause an issue where you have to change the zoom of your map to select them for Chat display or use (and sometimes that doesn’t even work if the Commander is right on top of the PoI). What I mean is that the PoI (and the ability to select it) shows ON TOP of the Tags and player dots (rather than visa versa like now).

Just a suggestion for improvement as I can see the OPs suggestion being a case for this being toggled off and the player forgetting about it and THAT causing issues.

I use the rotating mini-map. I need to be able to see the little teeny-tiny NORTH indicator to know what direction I’m heading. More and more, Commander tags are joining the other edge-of-map icons to conceal that poor little letter N.

The guy might be a legitimate leader. He might be just another attention-seeker. I don’t care. I don’t do WvW, and have never had the need to be “led” in PvE. (I despise Zergs). To me it’s just more pointless screen clutter.

I am all for toggles to give us individual control over what we can see. Commander Tags. Legendary Footprints. The various Legendary Weapon “clouds” and “swooshes” and other vision obscuring effects. Toggles for the combat effects we want to see (i.e. Only our own / Only my party’s effects / All effects). Toggles! Toggles! Give me more control!

(“Toggles”… hmm. That’d be a cute name for my Ranger’s pet!)
