Q:

When I come to these forums and I scroll through a thread, it seems mighty impersonal. It’s hard to get into a discussion when you can’t put a face on the person you’re talking to, or hardcore trolling. It’s amazing how a simple picture can get people to be so close to each other.

I would suggest that ANet allow us to pick a photo of one of our characters to be the avatar of our forum profile. And if at all possible, create account profiles for other forumites to look at. That would be grand.

Also, here’s to you guys fixing this sites limitations.

I’ve been wanting them to add profile pictures forever. I’m so used to just looking at someone’s picture to tell who’s posting from using other sites but I can’t do that here so I normally don’t look at who the poster is at all unless they quoted me. It’s also hard to tell who are regulars because it’s easier to remember a name when it has a face.

I’m only here because sometimes I just like to watch things burn.

Adding a picture of our in game characters would be cool. Get to choose which one to represent.

I’d settle for the search feature getting fixed.

While I’ve had some good times on these forums, and I understand that they have certain inherent ups and downs as the official forum for the game, they have always felt unusually impersonal. There are just so many users that come through it (because it’s the official forum) that it’s difficult to build up a sense of the forum regulars without something extra to put a face (literally or metaphorically) on the person posting.

I don’t know if somehow pulling character data to generate profile pictures would ever be possible or practical, but it would be a neat feature, anyway. I’m not going to hold out hope for any significant changes to the forum software, however.

Avatars would be nice indeed, they might be able to tweak the image upload thumbnail system?

Though I’d have to use a shot of Donari and that would only reinforce people assuming I’m a man simply because he is. Woe!

It’s something blizzard does that I’ve always thought was neat.

For the forums being out as long as they have, I would expect them to have moved software a long time ago. The infrastructure hasn’t changed one bit, though. As it stands, these forums are just serving ANet as a tool for communication with users, but it’s not really a personal medium for user-to-user interactions.

I think personalization tools are needed for this to be an ideal forum experience. But hey, at least it’s better than gw2guru. The mod squad over there is god awful.

Just move the raw discussions over to reddit, not that it’s perfect but at least the site usability and sheer volume of opinionated posts makes for a lively time.

The only reason I access this forum often is because the very clean layout.
I access mostly at work and since this forum doesn’t have tons of images (avatar and signature) on the page I don’t need to keep worrying about others looking at my monitor, when someone look at my screen they basically only see text.
Reddit has the same idea and it is very popular and I don’t see complains.

If anything, I would suggest some tags or icons under your user name, but not like an avatar, more like “medals” or insignias.

Yeah, it would be like you open up your account page and you get a choice between:

Trahearne or Trahearne

Gaile Grey did mention that there was some sort of plan to improve the forums.

I’m hoping a total overhaul is planned. I like people having avatars, sig banners, forum groups, etc etc

Pictures would be nice. As noted above there are a lot of people who post and while you can learn the names of frequent posters and eventually get a sense of their “tone”, a picture could make identification of individuals immediate and more personal.

I also wish the forum would allow text below picture attachments. Sometimes I want, for example, text, picture, more text, picture, text, in a post.

While these forums could use a lot of work, I’d rather they put the development time into the actual game.

I don’t think the forum devs are the same as the content devs.
