Problem
Communication from Anet mostly consist of posting in joke threads or threads like “Capes”, “Post your Screenshot”, “Fuzzy backpack bug”. While a sense of humor is appreciated with these things, from where I stand it looks a lot like avoiding the posts that are difficult to respond to.

When is someone going to grab this bull by the horns and address the really tough-to-solve issues that exist ingame?

Maybe because they don’t have an answer that they can share for the tough to solve issues and when they ask the devs, they devs aren’t close to answer to the issue or the issue is a low priority for the company and they don’t know when they’re even going to be able to look at the issue.

Or the really tough to solve issues are the highly contested ones and any response unless it’s what the majority of players want to hear will be responded to with a negative response.

Example: the traits thread

“Sorry, we don’t have any new information on what they are planning with traits.”

“Oh, they aren’t working on traits? Don’t they know we hate how it has affected the game?”

“Yea, it’s been over 6 months, surely they have tossed around some ideas for how to deal with it. Why can’t they just change the traits slowly? Why do they have to wait for a complete solution to every part we don’t like? Why can’t they do it piecemeal where possible?”

“Why was the NPE put into place based on the traits scale when you know we didn’t like when traits got unlocked? So will the NPE change when the traits get changed?”

And if they had a solution to the issue, it wouldn’t be posted in that thread, it would likely be posted in the patch notes. Because that’s how limited ANet is when discussing things they are working on.

I can see 2 sides of this. As a player I want to know more about plans, and solutions and such. I want to be able to plan and have an idea what is coming down the road, just like we all do. On the other hand, I think some players around here have expectations that are a bit skewed to say the least. Just because you (or I) bought the game doesn’t give us the right to be the fly on the wall so to speak in meetings or closed door discussions. I am trying not to be negative as I would want to know and hear things myself.

I do have faith in Anet and have for a long time. I haven’t always seen the best or most popular decisions made, and have been vocal about it enough to earn a vacation from the forum, but overall I think they are one of the best out there. I feel the same about the GW community as well. The most helpful, and passionate fans and players around. I love being able to PM with a dev and have that personal connection. I thank those that take the time to do so (and have for years) It’s nice to be able to share your feelings and know they are being read, even if they aren’t responded to right away or exactly the way you would want. They are being taken into consideration and it shows.

Wow .. one more thread to show ANet while it is the best to post nothing at all
since really everything is turned against them.

Good job.

EVERY MMO is awesome until it is released then its unfinished. A month after release it just sucks.
Best MMOs are the ones that never make it. Therefore Stargate Online wins.

Yep, they do sometimes pop into the tough threads. But our tendency to bite their heads off when they post something we don’t want to hear is why we probably don’t see more.

Then there is the whole issue with precursor crafting. It was mentioned by an ANet employee, WAY before it will enter the game. And now people throw that at them every time they discuss broken promises. Because it’s not as easy as coming up with recipes and putting them in game for crafting. There’s the economy that has to be considered and what the effects of adding in precursor crafting will do to the precursor cost on the TP as well as the cost of the items used to make it. And it’s likely not an easy solution.

Obviously the importance of issues ingame are going to be different for everyone, it’s a matter of opinion. What I think of as the “real” problems might not have even crossed other player’s minds. I can understand that and respect it.

But you can’t deny the fact that Anet would much prefer to respond to “I Think We Need Capes”, than a thread titled “Broken PvE Combat”.

Are both concerns valid and important? Of course they are!

My point is that appears Anet would rather do their best to ignore one of the above issues, while taking time to address the other.

My only slight complaint is how we are only talked to a small handful of people at Anet, i think it would be awesome if some of the people directly working on some of the different content actually talked to us for direct feedback instead of being funneled through other devs.

Would you rather they talk to us or work on the content?

The ones who routinely talk to us are not the devs. They have to go interrupt the devs to get answers to our questions.

We do get the rare dev talking with us on rare occasions and that’s likely when they’re on a break or off for the day. They likely don’t have time to respond to threads on the forum when they are supposed to be working.

Never because the only possible answers would fall in the category of “bad PR”.
I’ve made threads on critical issues and pointed out critical problems in both communication threads and CDIs. My posts have always gone unanswered because as always I’m asking and pointing out the uncomfortable issues.

They’re not going to tackle any of this. It’s a “ignore it and it’ll go away” approach.

If here they fall they shall live on when ever you cry “For Ascalon!”
