Lets talk about roleplay for a second.

Its definately got its place in guild wars 2, with two commited servers (TC America and Piken EU) being its primary capitals of attention.

But while it exists, it gets some, but not alot of love in the long term aside from outfits and cosmetics which dont really apply to roleplay alone but more a greater “fashion” fiesta kind of thing.

But for us roleplayers thare is a glaring issue that needs addressing and hopefully can find a way to be dealt with in the distant future, be it in a future episode, or a future expansion.

We need Sittable Seats!

I mean, when we got new emotes it was great, and we always look forwards to more, but theres one thing a roleplayer hates more than anything, not being able to sit in a chair.

Its a comical and whimpering frustration when your trying to adjust your character to fit into a seat that just doesnt blend for them especially when some sit emotes take up an entire double-bench (Human females, im looking at you).

So heres my suggestion:

Seat, 2.0!

Lets talk about how Seats could work in the future, this is my idea for such a thing:

Instead of a simple case of click on seat and get into seat, we could actually make this into something a bit deeper and more interesting. Basically, you can essentially get into a seat slot where a bench might have 2 slots, a single seat has one slot, and a row of seats might have… four slots.

You can select which slot you sit in, by right clicking on it in a sub-menu to the left, which also confers a small sub menu of its own.

This sub-menu features the following:

Postures
Actions
Expressions

This bit is a bit ambitious, but lets just go with Postures being possible for now.

Postures, would be your characters actual posture while sitting, are they sitting legs open, legs closed, one leg over the other, are they leaning back with an arm against the sofa, or with ther hands behind their back.

Actions

This is a bit more advanced, this one, is an emotive menu, allowing you to choose an emote and activate it, doing so causes your char to play an emote, you can also set it to loop if you wish, periodically continueing over time.

This could feature eating, drinking, talking, shouting, thrashing angrily and so on and so forth.

Expressions

The biggest stretch considering the models and how hard it would be, this would take alot of work and is unlikely to fit in, unlike the other two.

Expressions would allow you to literally change your characters facial posture while sitting in a seat, such as looking happy, sad, angry, shocked, surprised, etc.

What about leaving the Seat?

Leaving the seat is easy, the game simply adjusts you slightly so your spawned back at the nearest point next to a table if there is one to spawn at, such as a hidden spawn point next to a floor tile.

This allows people to easily mount and dismount seats without getting clipped into walls or unable to leave.

Conclusion:

I think this could work, at least the posturing could definatley work, and the actions, maybe as a bonus, expressions, I admit is a stretch.

But come on A-net, we’ve waited years, we need a seat we can actually sit in.

Also, new emotes are always welcome, including additional sit emotes in general.

I would rather have a chair emote, to better reflect the different tastes of seatings of the other races, and you won’t have the horribleness of what you have in the Priory classroom.

The games he mentioned support RP much better.
WoW would be another great example and is the best possible mmo for you to RP in hands down.

That would be really cool, as well as eating and using(?) animations for the food and utilities that we have. You don’t have a combat use for them, but I imagine that roleplaywise it would be nice to be able to eat stuff.

I do have a question though, do you want this to apply to all seats in the game? Or only to new seats released with/after this change with this in mind? Because the former is significantly more work that would involve going through and finding every single seat in the game and updating it (as currently they are just a box, maybe with a rectangle behind it for the back of the seat), and I can’t see them going for that considering how few people would take advantage of it. But I do think that you have a shot at getting this implemented if it would be restricted to just new seats that they would introduce with this update.

I, too, support more ways to sit, especially in chairs.

It’s completely sensible to direct people to games like Smite or LoL when they complain aboit the lacking nature of GW2’s PvP.

It’s also sensible to direct roleplayers to other games that better suits your needs.

Instead of throwing a hissy fit, you might want to just try these games out. Who knows, you might fall in love with these games and realize how seriously lacking GW2 is in comparison. I can especially recommend Black Desert Online for all you roleplayers out there.

I for one, enjoy GW2 for what it is, and I go to other games when I want a deeper PvP experience or a more satisfying roleplay experience.

Not saying GW2 or any game is perfect as it it. Not saying you can’t ask for improvements. But lets be realistic here, what the OP is asking for is not realistic at all, it would take up way too much development time for something way to small. It’s best to just accept that GW2 will always be mediocre for roleplayers even if they do add new emotes and features from time to time, and that there are better roleplay games out there.

I am a promoter and fan of improve ’’OIRP’’ (open improvised roleplay), that’s being in character all of the time, just addressing any and all players that happen to pass my way or are simply in the vicinity. To me its about adopting a persona and a series of character traits and simply being that person no matter what the whole time I’m logged in. That said, we do indeed need a sitting animation for chairs.

We also need a way of make abusers vanish. I get a lot of trouble from non-roleplayers who are all too eager to ruin a session I am running by interrupting and generally being a nuisance and often the only tool I have to silent these idiots is the mute option which just means I do not have to listen to them typing like a gibbering ’’kitten’’ but this does not stop them dancing around, throwing in-game effects or otherwise being a pain, so would like to make mention of the fact that I feel when a person is muted their dialogue, their effects and any subsequent visual outcome and their avatar ALL VANISH so they can merrily act like a ’’kitten’’ and I will be blissfully unaware of it … oh, and when I mute them, I too vanish from their perspective. Only way I’m sorry to say to deal with the ever increasing number of ’’kittens’’ who for some reason believe it is their given right to interrupt, abuse and play merry hell with the enjoyment of others who are trying to bring some ‘life’ to Tyria.

Wondering….how does a Norn/Charr sit in an Asura-sized chair, or an Asura sit (get up) in(to) a Norn/Charr-sized chair?

Probably most of the ‘chairs’ in Tyria would be a bit of a Goldilocks-and-the-Three-Bears kind of thing for the different races.

but in other games we cant roleplay with guildwars lore… this games lore is quite good and attractive. and games a syou say like black desert online… well yeah it has better rp mechanics, but is has a lower quality in lore, been playing there too, and you dont even know why the classes have the power they have aside of the valquiries, so its not as good as you may think. and guildwars still offers us emotes, and ways to create a good rp, even if we can not use chairs. we can use Rolz.org or other dice rolling pages in case we need it, and the game offers use several dynamic events that we can use at our advantage to rp, without catually the need to roll dices…

That is rather selfish, but many of the players are as well when it comes to overall game. Anyhow, what you’re asking is impossible. Not only the engine doesn’t support it, ArenaNet isn’t interested as well.

People need to get it straight that roleplaying is something that is pretty much at the bottom of ArenaNet’s “worry” list. They even added a tab on the LFG, but no one uses it except for foreigners(barely) and trolls.

One of the big reasons why I used to stick around GW2 was because of the roleplaying community. That turned out to be a mistake. I mean, why are you even asking for these things? They can barely introduce new animations at all! And when they do touch the animations, it’s to either remove them or alter them. The new emotes were also lazily done; they’re altered versions of old emotes and even the “talk” emote shows great issues when regarding the human’s neck and spine. Employees of Anet even admited they cannot control the old code, so some of the animations we’ve seen some NPCs doing will never be usable by the players. I also have to add that roleplayers tend to not bring much for the game besides spam the chat. Although the best thing they do is to purchase gems in order to buy cosmetics.

The community itself is considered bad. On both sides, NA and EU share different issues, but they’re issues nonetheless. I am just going to be blunt and talk about what concerns me the most. There is a lot more to it, though.

The american side is silly. The people are oblivious. Quantity over quality. People fully disrespect the lore and show hostility towards those who are not so viable with the english language, even though some of them can barely form a correct sentence. Most of these plots don’t make any sense whatsoever and it’s cliché all around. It can actually make you cringe.

The european side is dying(last time I was around)… and I hope it stays that way- Hopefully this blight will just poof away permanently. It is full of drama. Drama is everywhere and you can’t really avoid it, no matter how hard you try. It’s like a mexican soap opera. People just seem to love dragging each other down… and boy do they drag this to forums and even other social media. It’s just ridiculous. I have witnessed countless events of over-the-top melodramatic nonsense in-game, on forums and even on Skype and other similar programs.

The main issue of most of the roleplayers is that they take “roleplay” as the meaning of their life. It gets to the point where it’s just sad. Just the same way other people just seemingly dedicate far too much time on playing the game itself and drain their own wallets into virtual currency. They will just bash against you if do anything that they dislike, and I promise, these people will try to make you look bad in the eyes of others. GW2 is a video-game, therefore meant for entertainment and for its social value. People do like to ignore that. Stop taking it too seriously. There is no need whatsoever to act as your character 24/7. As you can clearly see too many people do not take this game seriously, which is the case of normies. You’re just putting yourself in a place where you’ll be an outcast and seen as a freak.

I had one year of stories within my characters. 90% of those stories had to be thrown away into a trash can because the people I played with decided to bail on me. So here’s another point, it is a waste of time. You’re not developing anything interesting, you’re just wasting away effort…

My words may come out as cruel, but I’m just telling what I truly believe in and experienced. I honestly wish I had never dwelt myself into this obnoxious little community…. and that things had turned out better.

Snip

Holy cow batman, who hurt you in a past life?

This wasn’t a thread made to bash on roleplayers or tell them to shove off to other games, and it amazes me that every time a roleplayer sticks their head up out of the sand (even when doing something as innocent as making a suggestion like “Hey, maybe one day, we can sit on chairs properly?”) they either get an essay as to why they are a terrible person/their community is full of terrible people and they should feel bad, or they get told to literally leave the game.

Do you non-roleplayers have nothing actually productive to do with your time?

One argument is the equivalent of somebody saying “I wish more than two classes in this game could use the rifle” – and this person getting told to go play Call of Duty or Battlefield because it has “more guns” in it, as if their suggestion was somehow toxic or bad.

The other argument is nothing short of trying to bully the roleplayer into shutting up and never poking their hand up with a suggestion ever again because you personally had a terrible experience and now you think it needs to die completely, because how dare it exist in your game after it hurt you so.

Come on, folks. Let the roleplayers have a thread – just one thread, can you manage that – where they can make an innocent suggestion like “Maybe one day we can sit on a chair, please?” without you bashing their heads in with the rhetoric that they’re unwanted. Is it going to happen? No. No it probably isn’t, and we all know it probably isn’t going to happen, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t allowed to make the suggestion or every now and then remind ArenaNet that they’re a subset of players that exist.

I’m going to guess no…

I mean if it really was that easy to do, they would’ve done it ages ago, which means they either don’t want to, or they probably don’t know how to…

Could be an engine limitation. You would have to turn every chair into something akin to the old Mortar with an animation accompanying it, and I don’t remember seeing any interactable vehicle object accompanied by it’s own animation to enter/exit kittenpit or sit down animation, introducing new animations obviously not being Anet’s strong suit to begin with…

Sheesh, who knows… I am merely speculating, but I my guess remains the same.

I’m sorry but all of this was made moot when they launched magaservers. See, while i get RPers want to be heard by Anet, that fact is (and I don’t begrudge your desire to RP) I don’t want to see it/hear it/read it. But thanks to megaservers, I come across it WAAAAAY too much and its annoying. See as much as RPers want these things non-RPers don’t want to be subjected to any of it most of the time yet we are. Furthermore there are tons more things anet should be focusing on delivering that are leaps and bounds more important over a feature that a small population of players would even care about.

Wow this really got the wrong kind of attention but for all the wrong reasons.

Okay, lets play this card for a moment:

Talking about Roleplay In General:

Roleplay is far from dying, but I wont outright lie and say everything is perfect. That being said I will say that the declining EU population has made roleplayers in the EU significantly more open and welcome to people in recent months. Things got better now that most of the hyper elitists went away from Piken and joined other mmo’s.

However, the real issue with that is that indeed, megaserver contributed to some factor in damaging the potential for roleplayers to exist, because the concept of a roleplayer co-existing with a normal player doesnt really work when roleplayers crave a safe-space.

Im a bit of an ironic hypocrit here, I hate that term, safe-space, and yet, in roleplayers case its literally the truth of how they thrive in comfort. Roleplayers dont “want” to share their world with everyone else but at the same time they DO want a place they can congrigate to. The answer to that would be this:

Megaserver Sub-Servers

While in a Capital City Region at least, this could be done since I can see it working, GW1 had this and it is “not” that hard to create specific servers in GW2.

The idea behind this would be a simple lower left sub-menu like GW1 had where you can pick which server your in while in a capital city like Lions Arch, DR, etc.

This basically allows people to specifically choose which megaserver they’d rather be on, that way, they’re always shoed into that server. Such as the Roleplaying Megaserver, or the PvP Discussion Megaserver, or the Trade Megaserver.

Honestly, this would help deal with some of the social problems anyway.

But lets talk about the REAL reason Roleplay has suffered in GW2 and its happening in WoW, ESO, SWTOR, Wildstar, and every MMO To Date.

Too Many Elitists, and Safe-Spaces

Contrasting my previous point about there not being enough of a specific safe-space for roleplayers as a whole. We have segregated our communities so thinly now that its a case of “your either with us or against us” which forces people to adapt to some micro-communities lore/rules/ideals about how rp should be done.

This is unhealthy, frankly, I actually blame Guilds for this, as their existance has given way to the excuse for people to not intergrate with others openly.

So while we DO need a HUB in which we can all meet, what we also need is to stop being so aggressive towards outsiders, guildless players or people not in our camp.

If roleplay is to thrive, it has to do so without interference, you cant get in its way and try to control it that NEVER works and has been PROOVEN to kill RP communities in the past. See Rift for an example of that being a failed experiment that people should learn from.

The best way forwards is an age of tolerance where roleplayers can openly enjoy rping with other roleplayers even if not everyone gets on. An age where your not bullied by demanding elitists, or extreme mary sues because you didnt agree to their hyper realistic/edgy fantasy plots.

Instead of playing the camp game, just let people pick, choose and be versitile, theres nothing wrong with being a bit of everything. Its a fantasy world, not everything has to be realistic and edgy, likewise, not everything has to be so over the top that you’re playing an anime.

Respect peoples limits and equally respect peoples desire to play something. If they want to be something more than billy the realistic peasant on the street thats their RIGHT to do so.

Likewise, if they WANT to be billy, thats ALSO their right.

Nobody is wrong, as long as they dont outright disregard the lore, and even those that do are entitled to as long as they dont force that on others.

So going back on topic.

Yes, id like my chair, one I can sit in, and yes, as hilarious as it would be to see a charr trying to sit on an asura seat, id still like to see it happen someday.

Part 2

Going on…

Roleplayers are the prime part of any MMO, however minority their communtiy may be they are the most immersed players in the world itself and have the most interest in seeing it grow.

They build fan-based storylines, and build amazing communities built on those fan-based worlds they generate through respect to the lore, or interesting ideas that edge the boundries of it.

There is nothing humanly wrong with a small group of nerds wanting a bit of fun in a fantasy world to escape the boring kittenstorm that is real life.

And frankly I think they need a little more love, not less.

Also, recommending people to other games that are suffering just as much right now is not the right answer. Every MMO RP community right now is suffering the plague ive mentioned in my previous post. Too many bubbles, too many elitists, and the bubbles that do exist get taken over by smaller, more control-freak centric ones.

Its sad to watch, watching people get angsty over someone refusing to bow before some made up Seraph guild or refusing to accept that their Criminal/Cult Guild can suffer a setback.

Interaction is pivotal to us all, we need to be more willing to TALK, to COMPRAMISE instead of being sturdy and saying “no its my way or no way”.

Either way…

Roleplayers are amazing, even the ones I hate are amazing, even the people I want to punch are amazing.

Because the fact they can actually live in this world in ways no normal person could shows just how much they care about it.

So give ’em some love guys.

Hi
I’ve been the leader of a RP guild since 2005 in Guild Wars. We’re a 100% in-character guild, we offer and environnement for role-player who want immersive contact with Tyria. Back in GW1, Arenanet recognized us as Guild of the week #50, I remember talking with Gaile Grey as she was in charge of that program with the community. That means: YES, ArenaNet cares about Roleplayers, and YES the community is active, creative, and fun.

As for chairs: I believe one day Anet will find a way to implement this feature. I’ve seen it nicely integrated in Swtor with a /chair emote that basicaly makes you able to sit anywhere. Nothing here is impossible. I believe it is not their top priority, that’s true, but I do believe there is a dev in there thinking “maybe we should give it try”.

Take care.

It’s a shame that last time I remember that being discussed, a couple of vocal EU RPers and Gaile herself told us all to simply change our chat settings so we don’t see emotes when we’re in cities. Even though the suggestion explained how such a thing would help with RPer integration and the RP community itself.

Granted the discussion was 4 months ago (you can read it here if you missed it or you’re curious), but it ultimately went nowhere despite most people seemingly being in favour of it. By the end of the thread I think we’d all pretty much given any hope for RPers to be further integrated or for non-RPers to filter out their chat. But hey, we tried with sensible, logical and reasoned arguments for the proposal at least!

As for sittable chairs, I’d like em for in the guild hall at least as would others. Some of us like to make our own little corners of the hall personal and I know a few people have said that it’d be nice if we could actually sit at the tables and on the chairs given how bloody expensive some of them are to craft! Charrs and Norn sitting on Asura sized chairs may look weird but it’s also entertaining. Heck, off the top of my head I’m thinking of RP scenarios where that in itself could feature.

First of all, to address the folks who are on the “Don’t like it, try a different game” train, how about “Don’t like someone posting suggestions for future features geared towards role-players, read a different forum thread” Roleplayer is IN THE TITLE of the post, so there’s no excuse to be a kitten.

continuing on. I understand that there are a number of technical limitations that put the idea of making current chairs sittable in to a class somewhere between “Pain in the kitten” and “kitten no”. (yeah, I manually typed kitten)

First there is the fact that most of the chairs are not so much solid individual objects as they are art assets that happen to have collision boxes (badly) placed around them. You would first need to convert EVERY chair in Tyria in to a format that would be usable for sitting. Second, lots of asuran chair models, or even human sized ones, would be majorly inappropriate for seating, say, a Norn or Charr. You would have to either have seperate sitting animations per race per chair type, or just not allow those races to sit in said chairs in the first place. Third, the animations themselves. The emotes that were “added” in to the game were existing animations being used already by NPCs, and as such were a simple matter. Fact is animating racially unique seating animations is a bit of an arduous process.

The animation thing can’t really be gotten around if we want sittable chairs, BUT what you can do is eliminate the other technical problems and minimize the animation problem by creating a /chair emote. The emote would then spawn a racially appropriate chair, and animate the character sitting in that chair as a persistent animation. No poses, or seated emotes etc. Most of us would be at least marginally happy with this basic solution and nothing more.

if you want RP go to FFXIV or even ESO.

Why go there when GW2 is better? Although I play ESO too casually and they just added sitting in chairs. ;-; I’m not an RPer but I still like games to be immersive/realistic.

I been waiting for it to reach GW2 for a long time and the developers know people want it and talked about it a few times before. Not sure how much effort they put into getting there since then though.

I support the ideas but ANet seems to have made it clear that they do not support RP as a legitimate, or important, game mode.

Good luck with the suggestions.

I think you misjudged the conclusions of that thread. While some did support the idea of /RP, I think it’s a bit disingenuous to claim most were in favor. If there was a consensus to arrive at from that thread, it’d have been:

  • Most didn’t care for or against the idea.
  • Practically everyone was in favor of decreasing emote radius and /say as well as making it possible to report someone by the /em they produce.
  • Many that opposed the idea thought so on the grounds that it really accomplishes nothing.
  • /rp was more to support players who couldn’t be bothered to create a chat tab without /em in it and refused to do so because “they might miss a friend /waving at them randomly in a crowded city hub”.
  • the idea doesn’t do much for RPers except giving you the option of hiding your text from possible harassers, of which could be accomplished already though available chat options.

I think Anet have stated on several occasions that programming characters to correctly sit in a chair is never going to happen due to some programming thingy….

I mostly play for the new Free-For-All arena in PvP lobby.
….. And Elementalist.

I do think a sit chair emote would be an ideal substitute much like SWTOR or ESO have but im not sure it will be the absoleute solution…

Even so, it’d be nice to get alot more emotes in general since cross arms is a widely popular one among roleplayers so yes, a sitting chair emote or multiple versions would be nice.
