A change to the social situation. (Blocking)
Thief 80 | Elementalist 80 | Mesmer 80 | Necromancer 80 | Revenant TBA
I fail to see why this is needed. There is nothing wrong with the current system.
The reason it’s needed is because there are options in the right pull down menu that you might use that are right next to block. A tiny tiny movement has you blocking someone instead of say inviting them to the guild. I’ve accidentally blocked friends and didn’t realize with with the current system.
a notification, letting you know you block someone, would be nice.
I think that a what would serve best would be a notification when you block someone, and a confirmation request only if they’re in your guild(s), friends list or party.
How often does this happen to how many people? It’s a lot of work to ‘fix’ something that doesn’t occur that often and is easily mitigated. I’m not always that careful and I’ve never accidentally blocked a friend (I have, however, accidentally friended someone I meant to block— and fixed it as soon as it happened).
just dont be lazy and double check who you are to block. is it really that hard to spend 2 kitten extra seconds on that??
It’s not the blocking, that’s the problem. It’s when you go to invite someone to a guild, thinking you have and block them instead. Sometimes this can happen in the middle of a guild mission when someone asks for an invite. All things considered, you should get some kind of message that you’re blocking someone.
I can’t imagine why anyone feels this is unreasonable.

There’s no reason, some people just oppose every single change to the game that does not directly benefit them, and also take any admission of human error as a chance to chastise and belittle others. It’s pretty sad, really.
But yes, there should be a double-check here.
I support this suggestion. It has serious consequences but is easily done by accident, there should be a confirmation alert.

On a related note, this is why they need to have one on the “oh my god what did you just do to my bags!” button (or maybe it’s called auto-sort or something?) that I sometimes hit depositing all collectibles. And then I get to spend the next 20 minutes putting everything back to the way it was.

Let’s talk
I don’t think the request is unreasonable, I just think the likely cost of implementing it outweighs the benefits. For example, I don’t invite people when I’m in combat (even though I type in chat all the time ), because I don’t want to make a mistake. Instead, I whisper whoever made the request and ask them to wait until I’m OOC.
On the other hand, the entire right-click-on-names interface could use a makeover and if they are going to do that anyhow, then, sure, include this as part of the overhaul. There are all sorts of inconsistent behaviors in the current mechanic, so I can see ANet addressing them and adding some QoL changes (like this one).
Simple change.
Implement a “Are you sure you wish to block” feature when you right click block someone, this way you can’t accidently block your friends, now here’s where this would actually come into affect.
Once you’ve blocked someone, you’re not able to unblock them for 24 hours, and while they’re blocked, you’re not allowed to contact them in any way shape or form, be it messaging them via whispers, via say, map chat, guild chat, mail, anything, it’s not possible, they won’t even see your emotes.
This is why i suggest that we’re given a “Are you sure” window when blocking players, because when you’re attempting to join another map of a party member, occasionally you may accidentally click block, so a confirm feature would resolve this.
tl;dr if you block someone, you can’t message them in any way for 24 hours.
I don’t have any objection to a confirmation popup but you have failed to provide any reason for the 24 hour blackout idea. What is the reasoning/justification behind this?
[edit: as someone who’s been working with UI design and user metrics lately I have to say: do you know how many people read popup messages when they are in the middle of something else? Most people don’t. As far as I can tell, the 24 hour blackout idea would cause massive QQ from people who did block friends by accident (despite the popup) with no benefit. Again, why do this?]

Ah, my bad. I guess I’ve never tried to whisper anyone that I’ve blocked. In that case a confirmation popup may be better than nothing although I’m still skeptical about how many people would actually pause to read it.

Unblock is as easy too..no adjustment needed
