So I decided to give GW2 a second try with a friend of mine (I played GW1 quite a bit, we were in GW2 beta and played it when it started but left shortly after release for a few reasons that are irrelevant to this post). I don’t know that much about PvE cause I prefer the PvP and I had only lvled to 23 on an Ele last time.

My friend wanted to make an Ele and he finds humans to be boring so he wanted us to play Charr. I made a Necro with him but I really prefer the look of humans for spell casters. I had played Necro a bit in the past as well and to be honest, I find myself incredibly bored with that class (at least early game). While my friend burns enemies down fast and AOEs everything, I take forever DoTing them with bleeds and poisons, I don’t even have minions yet but it might still not be that fun. So here are my questions:

1-What do you think are the better weapon choices or some of the better skills for lvling a Necro in PvE (we’re around lvl 8 ATM if I remember well)? I remember liking the wand better for PvP, the staff’s probably nicer for WvW but neither of them seems that great for PvE.

2-I think that I’d rather play a human Thief that I started or a human Mesmer. At which level could me and my Charr friend join up to keep questing together? How can we do it and will I be unable to continue with my own personal quests or are these just a few minor ones that I can go back and complete on my own at any time later on?

From what you’ve said, a thief would be better for you. Necros don’t really kill fast. You can get together at level 2, right after the tutorial.

Each city as a portal in it, which leads to Lion’s Arch. When you go through it, you’ll see you’re at Gate Hub Plaza, with gates to every single starting city.

Party up first, because you might end up in different versions of the same map. If your portrait is a silhouette then right click on it and click join in “whatever map”.

Then you’ll be together.

Nice, thanks for the answer. Now, I only wonder, if I join him over the Charr side, he’ll be doing his quests and I won’t be able to do mine so he’s going to be quite ahead on levels right?

It’s not quite that simple. You only get story quests that are race specific every 10 levels, So it doesn’t matter where you level to 10. Then you can both do each other’s stories ore seperate to do them. The stories will actually grow together so at level 30 or so you can start doing those together as well, but if you do them together at a lower level, only one of you will be rewarded. You can still hang together, but one will get rewarded and one won’t. Of course that reverses when you do the other story.

I’d recommend axe/warhorn for low level necros. Daggers are also ok.
The condition aoes are fine for large groups of mobs, but in most cases whilst exploring, you’re just looking to kill singular enemies.

Wells are also really powerful and I would recommend them for tougher enemies. They melt them pretty fast. Minions are ok, especially if you want something to tank for you and don’t want to worry about your utility skills often.

As for race, honestly go with what you like the most aesthetically, considering that’s what end-game is mainly about. You don’t want to be stuck with something you have spent time on but don’t like the look of.

However, with profession, try as many different weapons/combinations and utility skill types as possible before making your mind up about it. Professions vary so much within themselves that you shouldn’t judge one from initial feel, really.

As with what others have said, you can play different races together, just the initial stories are different but converge to the same point. If you both get to Lion’s Arch, then it should be easy to explore the same areas together.

If you both explore charr areas, you get the same amount of exp. If he does his story quests, he will get exp for them. However, you could run to your story instances too without exploring that much- just grab waypoints as you go. For every story “arc” (all chapters avaialable every 10 levels), you seem to get about 2 levels. So even if he did his story and you didn’t do yours, he wouldn’t be massively outlevelling you.
