A few questions from a newb
How much gold do you think would it approximately cost to level my Leatherworking to 400?
This is a great site for crafting. It tells you how much gold at the time it will cost and what you need to buy. I have found you can save even more money by placing buy orders for lower level mats and waiting for them to fill. The prices change as the economy changes. Right now this is what it costs to level 400 in leather working:
1. If stuff is dying faster than I am, I assume my dps is fine. Sorry, but that’s genuinely the measurement I use.
2. gw2crafts website- google it- will help out with this so very much! You’re welcome. (Trogdor beat me to it! Ah, well! Link above) However, if you pop into Orr, you can get full sets of exotic for karma currency.
3. Eles are in no way underdogs or unpopular. Necros are superb in PvP, but not as effective as other classes in PvE (but still competent), and mesmers are pretty sought after, too. Unless you’re doing PvP, I’d recommend a necro.

Because we can’t be angry about both?
1) The best way I known to calculate your dps is to record a 30sec rotation on a golem in heart of the mist. If it’s for spvp then you can add up the dmg you got. For PvE its a big more complicated because spvp and pve don’t have the same stats, gear, buff, etc. So for PvE you then need to transform that video into a skill coefficient/second for each weapons and calculate your dps manually from that.
2) gw2craft.net like other said. But don’t craft your weapons/armor unless they are ascended or that you craft them to level up to 500. Otherwise you are better off from Dungeon tokens. Badge of Honor or karma also work but you can’t salvage them so watch out if you gonna put an expensive rune in those.
Agreed with the above about crafting. Use the web guides if you want a fast boost to 400 (and 500), but if it’s just Exotics you’re after, dredge up a few gold and buy from the trading post. Ascended is about a 5-6% step above Exotic, but it’s time consuming and Exotics work just fine.
As for underdog classes, Necro or Mesmer. My friend found the challenge of playing a mesmer to be more interesting (before he quit around level 40 :\)Though, you already have an Engi, which has one of the highest skill curves in the game.

Hello folks, I haven’t played since the release of GW2 and back then I only made it to like level 40.
My questions:
1. How do you measure DPS in GW2? I read a lot about how people min max their class and gear but since there are no tools to provide dps statistics how do you actually know if you got better?
2. I just hit 80 with my Engi and I need some gear to start out with. I already got huntsman to 400+ and can craft myself some nice weaponry. How much gold do you think would it approximately cost to level my Leatherworking to 400?
3. I can’t decide between rolling a necro, mesmer or ele alt. My old charr warrior yearns for some love but the gameplay is a bit too monotonous for me. I also like to be some kind of “underdog” in games and tend to roll classes that are not very popular
.
Thanks in advance and happy friday!
I’ll answer as best I can, and apologies if my answers are similar to other(s) (or if they’re not the right answer)!
1. A: DPS has a (sort of?) calculation. It’s also very easy to tell if you’ve gotten stronger, especially if you’re paying attention to your Hero Panel where your stats are. There are also a great number of sites out there that give decent stat information and where the current meta is standing at for your profession. As for getting ‘better’, the only way to really tell, I guess, is how many times you get downed/defeated during an encounter you had trouble with previously.
A good measure of how skilled you are is soloing dungeons, sPvP, and Fractal solo/duos. If you can solo a dungeon/Fractal, you can safely consider yourself skilled with your profession, and if you get a high rank in sPvP you can also say the same thing.
2. A: Currently, http://www.gw2crafts.net shows that a normal Leatherworking journey from 0-400 would cost around 15g. That website is also a great tool for speed guides or general guides to all crafting professions. I highly recommend you bookmark it if you plan on crafting a lot.
3. A: As for classes that aren’t very popular, I’d say Necromancer is the least popular in PvE (sPvP and WvW are a different monster). Though, honestly, all classes are played pretty equally (or maybe that’s the Megaserver talking).
I hope you enjoy the game, and I hope I and the others answered well enough!
EDIT: Here’s a tip if you didn’t know it: you can type /wiki (name of in-game stuff here) and it’ll instantly open your default browser with the GW2Wiki page on the item. Just putting that out there!

Thanks for the replies I think I’ll skip the crafting and just buy stuff for now.
