I wonder how much money Arena net needs to keep a game like GW2 running. It certainly can’t be free to run the servers, and to pay the staff for updates. I know when the game was launched it made a huge amount, but a lot of that also had to be paid back for the production of the game.

I have recently researched and found that every one of NCsoft’s mmos eventually are just shut down, sometimes with only a months notice to the players who have invested who knows how much time.

Arena net is pushing that stuff in the cash shop pretty hard. Most of it isn’t even useful save for the bag slots, bank space, and transmutation stones. Wow I can wear a winter coat, I mean really come on. The gem shop/cash shop is full of that stuff. What the real kicker here is though, you can use in game gold to buy gems.

The community is getting angrier, and meaner with each passing day. The nicer people who make these games great, simply walk away from all the horrible stuff in chat, they are just tired of reading it. The lack of any real new content is just making people unhappy, they are bored, and they didn’t log on to just do the same thing again. Before someone says of you leveled to fast, please just look at what level most people are when you pass by them, then reconsider that statement before you even make it.

The Slippery slope here is Arena net, has made it so players can swap gold for gems. How is this a problem you might ask? Well here is in a nutshell. The game has launched, the income for that launch has been made. Now hopefully new players will try the game, hopefully being the key word. Then there is the cash shop, those are the only two sources of income for Arena net when it comes to GW2. You can’t really rely on hope though it will get you into trouble. What I am seeing is more people are leaving the game. Compared to the amount of people buying a new version of GW2. The servers are already rather empty, and there has been no indication that they will be getting any fuller. No big deal right, there is still the cash shop to make huge $$ right?!? Well maybe, but consider this. If people just swap there in game gold for gems. Then they can get the gem item with in game money. This would basically decrease Arena nets source of income from the cash shop, possibly even to a point where it doesn’t produce the needed profits. Then Arena pushes the cash shop items harder, to the point where the updates drive existing costumers away. When people will no longer even log on to see what color the latest fur coat or funny hat will be.

The new content that is introduced is often broken from the start, and goes unfixed for months. Arena net tells players new content is ready, when it obviously is either lacking dynamic events(Karaka island now). Or it is just bugged to the point where most players won’t even bother to try to complete and, or won’t log on to try very often(FoTM).

It is sad to say but I see GW2 going the same way the rest of NCsoft’s titles have gone. Thanks for playing for the last 5 years, sorry that you are about to loose that entire social network of people that you love. Its not like you wasted 5 years making friends/contacts, most of whom you will loose, because it was fun right?

Maybe Arena net will see this post, and change for the better, maybe not, but that is why I wrote it for Arena net. Not for you to paw through and point out what you think is stupid while calling it a different name so you don’t get in trouble. So you can keep harassing people through your computer. Don’t waste time with your witty replies they will go unread. I’ll just say a few things, even if they are going to be unread by you:

0. They are trying. There are very few “evil” developers out there. Yes, they made GW1…but this is an ENTIRELY different MMO with a brand new structure for them.

1. They need to make money, but there isn’t an evil conspiracy (evidence: you have material storage that they have even expanded).

2. They made mistakes. They, more importantly, KNOW that they’ve made mistakes. They are working to correct them

3. Play a game as long as you enjoy it and not a second more. If it stops being fun, take a break and come back if and when you hear something interesting.

4. Forums are full of people who agree or disagree with each other. The one thing that all sides bring is passion. Some people use that passion to make bold, yet still respectful criticisms. Others just let it loose with a rude and reckless abandon that winds up stirring up even MORE passions.

5. I hope you do come back eventually. The first 3-6 months of most MMOs is a time of great population fluctuations, mistakes, rehashes, rebuilding, and new visions. It’s COMPLETELY NORMAL for people to leave the game during this time. The honeymoon is over. Now it’s just time for ANet to work on continuously adding content to get those people back and THEN some.

Here’s what people thought of GW1 when it first came out: http://tinyurl.com/bntcvyc
“A release is 7 days or less away or has just happened within the last 7 days…
These are the only two states you’ll find the world of Tyria.”

Can I see your “research”? There has only been one MMO that has been shutdown on Ncsofts end as far as I know and that was due to legal reasons with the game developer.

Active MMOS by ncsoft:

Aion
City of Heroes
Lineage
Lineage II
Guild Wars
Guild Wars 2
Blade and Soul

Also Tera IS lineage III, considering a lot of the code from the game was stolen.

You also keep insisting that people who buy gems with gold aren’t funding areanet and that is not true. Every gem you buy from the cash shop with GOLD indirectly comes from a player that sold their gems for GOLD.

In other words, those gems are paid for either way… even if you just use gold.

Furthermore, Guild Wars classic was “dead” in content updates from 2008-2012 and it’s still hanging strong. There hasn’t been an “expansion worth” of updates to guild wars classic in YEARs.

I think you’re just being overdramatic

EDIT: City of Heroes was shut down a few months ago, Chase. Basically for no real reason whatsoever, as far as I’ve heard. It has people nervous, and understandably so. Still.

As a note, one that may put you a bit more at ease if ye’re around to read it: people buying gems with in-game gold aren’t actually reducing ArenaNet’s cash shop profits. if anything, they’re increasing them. Someone has to buy the gems from the shop and put them on the market before they can be exchanged for in-game gold. Every gold coin that a gems-to-gold converter flashes their Visa for is a gold coin someone had to pry out of the teeth of a Risen somewhere, and every single gem that a gold-to-gems converter hoovers up for another bag slot is one that someone out there traded an hour’s time at their workplace for.

The cash shop isn’t really a problem. It has just the sort of thing one would expect in a cash shop; I’ve never felt like I need to go and sink a minimum required investment in the cash shop, and at the same time there’s plenty of things in the cash shop I’m perfectly willing to part with a bit of scratch for (if I had it, anyways). That’s the way the shop should be.

As for broken/glitchy new content/events…well, Wintersday went off pretty well, eh? ArenaNet’s never managed an open-world MMO before. They’re learning. yeah, they screwed up a few times here, not gonna lie, but everybody does that. Give them a little leeway, acknowledge their efforts to fix their mistakes as much as the mistakes themselves, and have some hope. It’ll be okay.

I do hear ye on the toxic “community”, though…that is going to be a problem for ArenaNet down the line here, no joke. All we can realistically hope is that the worst of them eventually get too disgusted to continue and leave, and all we can realistically do is not descend to their level no matter how much incentive they offer us to do so. Ugh.

Tl;dr:

A general question regarding GW2’s long term viability followed by vague statements regarding the use of its initial profits.

A claim of “research”, followed by a blatantly false statement regarding NCsoft.

An observation passed off as a fact, followed by personal opinions on the selection of items in the gem store.

Several generalizations of the “community” and “people.”

A hypothetical situation based on more assumptions and personal experience.

Criticism of a single event with no mention of other events, and another generalization based on personal experience.

A conclusion based on a prediction, followed by an inability to accept criticism.

After the GW2 experience I will not play another game with RMT again. It doesn’t matter that devs go into it with the best intentions it will end up corrupting the game as it has done with GW2.

The toxic community has largely been created by anets own actions. The ascended gear fiasco, the karka event, DR, fractals, now aoe nerf, the list goes on. The toxicity only reached the level it has after these were all botched up by anet. A lot of it from GW1 players who feel betrayed.

I doubt thats the thing to consider. D3 sold out huge amount of copies also thou its completely crappy game.

On the other hand they say that player base is slowly but steady growing up.. is that true, hard to say. They wont announce rapid drop in player database for sure if one would take a place. That would only create snowball effect for them.

The ‘toxic community’ is really caused by conspiracy theorists that shout loud and long about what they see as a ‘rip-off’ when no such thing is actually occurring. They log in, scream that they’re not getting their way, and leave in a huff when nobody takes them seriously.

For cryin’ out loud, this game is only six months old! The sky, Chicken Little, is _not _ falling.

I’m sorry I’m contributing to the toxicity; I’m just disgusted, because I’ve come to realize that no matter what an MMO developer does, everyone complains and moans and is generally ungrateful for what they do get….

Reading the OP I felt that some key points which were recently publicised were missed.

1. GW2 sales has exceeded expectations with over 3 million copies sold
2. Active accounts continue to increase in population
3. Gem store is more than paying for the live team currently in place, which is more than 10 times the size of the GW1 live team.
4. GW1 servers are still active after 7 years (I think) and will remain active for years to come, which shows commitment to the guild wars franchise going forward.
5. Lessons have been learned from Lost Shores and major events like it will not occur until issues that were exposed are resolved.
6. While there are some long standing issues still to be resolved, if you read the patch notes you can see issues are being addressed, and the next major update will be addressing even more issues.
7. Starting with the January patch due later this month and continuing in Feb and March, ANet are adding new content to existing areas to draw people back into the world of Tyria. This includes new reward systems, and later on optional dailies that will take you to different parts of Tyria.
8. As for angry players, some “anger” is to do with the effort vs reward and that the effort that some content requires is not worth the reward. Others are upset that some events they would like to do are broken, or are blocked by broken events. And others are concerned about game balancing issues. All of these issues are being looked into and some will be addressed in the next 3 months.
9. Guild Wars 2 offers variety, but unfortunately some players (including myself) get stuck in the “ok I made it to the 80 zone, now what? There’s not much here” mentality. Just because you are max level does not mean you have to stick to the max zones. The level scaling in GW2 allows you to experience all of Tyria and not feel too “overpowered”. And with the much anticipated additional content all over Tyria being rolled out over the next couple of months, returning to “lower level” areas will be even more rewarding.

Erm i believe 6 months argument isint valid here entirely. It is excuse for lets say bugs or some incompletion in game but not for the fact they released completely different game than they announced. Thats a lie which has nothing to do with age of game.

  • No Grind ( i grind every day to support my gold needs for wvwvw )
  • Personal Storyline ( yes for first 30 levels its personal )
  • Your dessicions makes difference ( no they dont , i just push random answers )

… and i could continue this list long long ahead. What route they took is main concern for so called ‘toxic community’ and not route itself but the lie that they wouldnt. If this would be announced as grindy game with horrible pvp system i wouldnt even waste my money on it.

Well okey , pvp they can rework , i can give you that but they only increase grindiness.

Im not probably part of this ’ evil ’ community cause i play game and enjoy it on many levels but i am true to fact that they sold me bag of lies .. we know it, they know it.

I love the myth that either the video game developers or some misinformed gamers have created that companies absolutely cannot exist without a subscription fee or cash shops or a lottery, or some other way to get $$ out of people after the initial sale of the product… that is incredibly not true…

I don’t know why people believe this stuff… ANet has some intelligent people working for them… they did their research and priced the game at a point that already includes server costs for however long an average player plays a game of this sort… I’m a financial analyst, planner, (different companies have different titles for y position) and I’m telling you right now, all the costs have been accounted for already in the original sticker price… a legit company would not release a product that they knew wouldn’t make them money without the need to rely on some gimmick cash shop…

I assure you, ANet has done it’s research, they know their costs, they know how long people play for, they know how many people spend $$ in these shops and how much… these aren’t guesstimate prices… Anet would make $$ off this game even if it didn’t sell a single item in the cash shop… I understand when a F2P game does this, as the cash shop is their only source of revenue… but when a company priced their product at $60, that is a price that was calculated to make the company $$… it would be a poor business plan for ANet to rely solely on the cash shop for their profits… I guarantee you … everything and they make from the cash shop is extra $$ on top, not $$ to make sure that they break even…

Don’t believe this myth that game developers need the cash shops to keep the servers running… how come you don’t pay a monthly fee for playing Battlefield or Call of Duty? I’m sure they have a lot of servers to run as well… if your favorite game shut down, it’s not because people didn’t buy enough in the cash shop, there was definitely another reason if it was not F2P… most likely, they didn’t sell enough games initially…

there are very few products on the market… any market, not just video games… that are sold at an initial loss and the company recaptures their lost revenue later on… only giant companies can afford to do something like this (Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Sony, Cell Phone Companies)… everyone else calculates their costs and sets the price off that… please don’t fall for this myth people…. ANet is not one of these companies… the $60 that you paid for already includes all the server costs for the majority of the players…

This is really a probability thing that has two outcomes: Success or Closure.

The only way one can predict which outcome it will be, is based on the ammount positive vs. negative feedback, which also reflects on the sales per “time frame” (i.e. ongoing sales per month etc.)

Lets take a look at these forums now.

We cannot deny that the sheer ammount of topics relating to issues/problems within the game is starting to dwarf the positive feedback. Core issues have not been addressed and just now, from my POV, has the communication between both parties began moving in the right direction.

Only time will tell, however IMO, GW2 could be doing much better than it is right now. The next lot of updates might make or break this game – well at least for me.

Your premises are all wrong:

- The community is NOT angry. The forum is, but forums always are. Please try to read the facebook comments which are almost 100% positive. The community is a very healthy one

- Buying gems with gold means buying them from another player who bought them with money. All gems have been paid for, one way or another.

- There’s a drop in players, but that’s always the case this time after launch. On the other hand, people are still playing in massive numbers. Other MMOs did not have that luxury.

So … while your post has a lot of self projecting, it is factually wrong and because of that, arena.net will read it and classify it as nonsense.

How can an unplayable thing be also easy? It’s either playable and easy or unplayable, can’t be both.

By the way, I’ve done all dungeons, except 2 paths in Arah and never found any dungeon unplayable, bugs sure exist but never hinder dungeon path completion. I also know a lot of people who got their Dungeon Master achievement without bugging once, so no there is no such high issue with bugs and they are certainly not unplayable, all dungeons can be finished.
As for the easy part, I guess you haven’t done all of them with a random group that is doing them for the first time. Yeah after some time, with proper group setups, they become “easy” but in which game they don’t?

Honestly, I’m a GW1 player and I just don’t like anything about this game. I probably will never play it again. I come on the forums to check how ArenaNet is doing but I really don’t see myself ever getting into it again. My friends and I are all playing other games while we wait for the “next best thing”.

I’ve come to terms with it. As a GW1 veteran I feel insanely betrayed but that’s okay, because they’ve managed to make millions of new fans and there are many people who actually love the game. I wish only the best for ArenaNet and I hope they perfect their vision of what Guild Wars 2 is supposed to be.

It’s not. When they do (rarely) work right they’re so easy it’s almost a sick joke. What happened to that “face melting difficulty” we where promised?

Care to explain?

Too all those moaners, whiners, people who cry they were lied to, to all those who think Anet has something against them, MAN THE **** UP ! Its only a game, and Anet are only human! To all those at Anet! Youve made a great game!

It’s good you feel that way, it’s a very mature response. In some way, I too feel betrayed by Anet on a few things but… the game is still good overall for me.

Lies Most dungeons are indeed extremely hard until you get them. At that point they become very easy. To me that’s evidence of good design.

Most dungeons work 100% of the time, I have no idea where this “rarely work” comes from. Only Arah and Fractals have game breaking bugs atm and they’re clearly being worked on.

If I can’t play Guild Wars 2 at work, I won’t work in Guild Wars 2 either.

I must admit, i do love the game but the community in-game seems to be on a slippery slope.
All i seem to read in general chat is players calling each other noob/ltp etc, i refuse to do fractals as unless you know exactly what to do (even at lev 1) you will be ridiculed by the other members of your party and possibly kicked!!!
WvWvW i love, but unless you are a ‘pro’ (not my wording, but one of the commanders in our world) you should not be in wvwvw and should leave or be open to a torrent of verbal which can get quite annoying.

Stick with a good fun guild and things are much better :-)
