Over the past few days, I’ve been watching a lot of gameplay videos, especially WvW, in the interest of choosing a new main profession. As of today, I am extremely disgruntled because of all the professions I’ve seen in action the Thief appeals to me the most, with its rapid mobility, vicious spike damage, and the fact that a good thief seems to be invisible half of the time.

Here’s where the problem comes in: another state in which a good thief seems to spend half of their time is badly injured. Considering that even my current warrior with a very large investment into Toughness is still too squishy for my tastes, it seems pretty obvious that Thief is not going to work well for me.

So why is this a poorly informed rant? Because at this point I’m confused and angry at this game because what it seems to offer me is the choice to pick a profession that looks like fun and have to work my backside off, struggling any time my skills slip, or I can just play a Guardian and, if not faceroll my way to victory, at least get a lot closer than I otherwise could.

Time and time again I see the same advice, “This isn’t WoW, you’re supposed to avoid damage with well-timed evasion/blinds/blocks/whatever and try to avoid getting into too much trouble at once”, and as debatably noble as such a sentiment may be, I say it loses its luster completely when I could just soak it up by playing a Guardian! At that point I have to ask myself what purpose other professions even serve, higher difficulty levels?!

Given the choice between hard work and easy street… is there really even a choice?

Yes, I openly admit to being poorly-informed, biased, ignorant, etc., and my only excuse is that there is a great deal of vague and contradictory information about this game out there, not to mention innumerable wildly idealistic claims such as “Every profession is just as good at everything if you play it right!” So why am I posting this anyway? Because I’m confused and upset and see no (other) solution, except possibly for suffering up to level 80 with every class to verify the truth for myself. Yeah, I think not.

So go on and hate me if you want, call me a n00b, it doesn’t really matter to me. I’m not trolling and this really is how I see the state of the profession choice.

ArenaNet’s stance with GW2 is “information overwhelms players, we have to minimize the amount of facts and numbers we give players so they don’t feel like they ’won’t get it’”.

Working as intended, I’m sorry to say.

You don’t really need to time dodges, just spam it at random intervals like everyone else does.

Put the signet build on your warrior (google is your friend) I hear it’s easy to pvestomp with.

I get you point but honestly if you are having a hard time with warrior then nothing is going to save you a headache except a ranger. They can reach a 1500 range, literally faceroll insanity. You can even go glass cannon on them and never die, in fact I see no other logical way to gear the ranger, just never go near enemies and your pet will tank for you.

GW2 is anti-melee, you must be quick at twitch reactions to animations or play a guardian to survive. If you are talking about pvp well I have no tips there it is horribly unbalanced and a waste of time unless you enjoy being stressed out by bugs glitches and overpowered glass cannons.

Very poorly informed indeed , you do NOT have to roll every class to 80 , goto heart of the mists and experiment away with all classes/gear/traits , heres the good bit it all costs you nothing ….

My guardian died so much I deleted her, my warrior was so boring she drove me to tears.

I have a Mesmer main I love so much I made a second one.
I have an ele at 58 or so.
My thief is very fun but can be trickey to play.
Recently I made an engi and I adore her

I think of all my chars my main is probably the most capable of “soaking it up” but that is not the point- you have so many skills to mitigate damage in this game that you really don’t have to “soak it up”. I’m not even talking about dodge, my main hardly ever uses dodge.

I understand that you are frustrated and just want to vent- seriously though take them into the mists and see how they play- you might be surprised.

Not really getting the part where the toughness warrior is still too weak. Did I read that correctly? If anything the warrior is definitely easy street.

Thief is awesome imo. Tho we do need some better balance when only two classes can 1 shot. And I don’t mean nerfs I mean buffs give all the classes an ability that has the potential to 1 shot. Now that’s balance!

A guardian is not a tank and its survivability is not bad because he has such good healing skills & heavy armor. His base health is the lowest in the game, together with a thief and elementalist (http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Health)
