There become more and more players steal the efforts of their in world events. Particular obviously in Taidha Covington as they were standing on the hill top of pole top. They admitted that “#AFKSQUAD just swoop in when all the dirty work is done”. IMHO they are corrupting the player environment and discouraging the honest players. This is really unfair and some player like me will start to stop world bosses.

People do this in every event. I wish there was a way for people to not be able to do this. People AFK till Tequatl or Claw of Jormag is almost dead then they’ll go up and get a few hits on before the boss dies and get bronze for the event but still get 100% of the loot.

Not fun.

But how do you distinguish between leechers and a player who got to the map late and ran as fast as he could and only got in a few attacks? Like those trying to do multiple bosses in a short time. Or logged into the game after the boss spawned?

It’s unfair to punish those players for the behavior of the leechers.

Not sure how they will fix this but I do know that the system they were using before the magic find change was flawed in that it used a system of DPS to guage rewards instead of participation. I think that they should probably add other methods to manage this like in events where there’s a big boss they could add a scaling reward for those who actually resurrect people who are downed, those who are hurt they could add a healing chart and those who are attacking they could add an algorithm to measure if they’d participated early sometime in the middle and the end to make sure people aren’t just end tagging.

I got to be honest. Even though it isn’t exactly ‘honorable’ it doesn’t detract from my fun or rewards, so honestly, this kind of behavior doesn’t affect me.

I can easily see why it would upset people, but it’s never really bothered me.

I wouldn’t say no to them getting a reduced reward if they don’t participate in all parts, but not an all or nothing proposition.

It will also hurt people.trying to get more people for an event with a timer but not enough dps. What health is he at? 50%? Sorry, I won’t get any reward so I’ll pass since it would be no reward for my time, I’d rather go do temple defense again, as I’ll get a reward.

This morning I experienced a somewhat different breed of players abusing the work of others in an event.
For some time now champions spawning during the Claw of Jormag event drop Champion loot boxes again, sadly. So I had an argument this morning with some of the guys doing this event, but only farming champs. He seriously wished the claw event to fail, since that gives him half an hour of free champion spawns without having to look for them. Some guys even tried to lure champions towards the people doing the “real” event to slow them down.

Can you remove the boxes again from those champions, please? The way that this event is working now is attracting people into such behavior; it need not be like that, there are already enough areas for champion farming.

Think about it this way:

would you still do it for the loot if those AFKers were not there?

you didn’t do it to help them, you did it so you could get the chest yourself.

some people are jerks and just want to benefit from what they didn’t work for. Other people are late to the party but work hard, and some people have emergencies. some people are probably too weak to stand in damage zone of the boss without wiping.

The loot is there to encourage as many people as possible to at least assist you in some way. punishing people who could not be there for the start or most of the duration will lead people to pass it outright, and you might need them.

Don’t worry about who’s who. Do it for you. Let the jerks deal with being jerks.

Some events are boring and give little reward, taidha is one of them. People AFK at things like modniir/megadestroyer, but other people are willing to do the pre events at those because they give loot and aren’t completely boring like running bombs at taidha or shooting the stupid wall at claw of jormag

Give extra 1 bag per completed pre-event at the end of the meta world event, and it’s done. Noone would sit there and miss those bonus bags.

How about contribution meters? The more you contribute to the event, the more the meter rises and the more you get at the end. So, if people afk all but the final shot, they rob themselves. Just a thought.

Imo most of the players are fighting the Claw of Jormag wrongly. Most of the players are trying to range it in the second phase. But protecting the golems would be wiser. If you don’t kill the champs they will attack the golems and kill them.

Just as I don’t think afk’ers should get “full” reward I actually don’t think the person arriving late to a World boss either should get “full” reward. Imho it’s a Little too easy to tag the bosses and get end-loot.

Then gain, some of the events promote afk-ing or concentrating on different objectives. After all – how many of us think that running kegs for 7 minutes at Taidha is fun? Or pew-pewing at Jormags wall getting feared/pushed all the time? Or running around killing all 13 portals at the Behe?

I like the construct at Teq where you get bonus chests for participating in the defences. Maybe there should be a bonus chest for actually killing off portals at Behe? I agree the champions at Jormags shouldn’t drop loot. Why do we need to drop so many kegs at Taidha? (Make more pirates or waves at Taidha if you (Anet) wants it to take a long time to complete instead of forcing us to run kegs for so many minutes.)

Also, maybe there needs to be more ways to measure activity in an event than just damage? People reviving, giving stability to allies or giving swiftness to the Escort we are protecting also contribute even if they don’t do much damage?

I don’t have a problem with this. Nearly every world boss requires a near AFK level of effort to start with. Actually AFKing such an event isn’t the problem; the problem is either that the event is too easy (but I realize a lot of people like easy… so we can’t fix that…) or that doing such events is the fastest, most reliable method of obtaining dragonite ore, and the types of players who most want dragonite ore to craft a TON of ascended gear to be optimal for multiple WvW builds / multiple dungenos and fractals, especially those doing it for multiple characters, are almost invariably the people who would rather not do world bosses ever, but now have a need to do them because they’re the most efficient and reliable way they can get dragonite.

No it doesn’t punish, it just rewards you for your participation! Why should you get 100% reward if you come in late? What is that for a non-sense… And he did say ‘scaling!’, he never said an all or nothing deal?

Unless it reaches a point where the majority of players are standing around waiting for the boss to die, I don’t see the issue. You have to understand that not all people who AFK for periods of time are doing it out of laziness. Some people have kids or they get called to do something, or nature says hello. Whatever the case may be, some world bosses (including waiting for the pre to start and the time the pre takes) can easily run 20-30 minutes per fight.

And if you’re running every world boss every day on reset, then you’re going to get a little burned out on giving 100% effort. Is it fair? Honestly, sometimes it’s completely fair. Megadestroyer, you can get extra bits of loot if you participate in the pre vs. standing around. Same thing with Fire Ele and a bunch of others. Heck, Mega even spawns a couple veteran mobs throughout, so you lose out on that if you aren’t paying attention.

Off the top of my head, I think most of the world bosses do a good job of rewarding those who are paying attention the whole time and participating in the pre’s. Taidha may be one of the few that is off-putting in that way.

Or words to that effect.

With the current loads of players during the events it absolutely makes no difference if 50 or 100 players are whacking a poor megaboss. Unless it’s Teq/Wurm, ofc, but then on megaservers those events are always being trolled in a million ways, unless someone manages to organize a guild raid.

This is my take on all this, IMO, it’s because the reward vs effort is only worth the AFK bronze.

That is true I had not thought of that. hmmm

I think it also illustrates the need for a full map event location system like in most FPS games. We shouldn’t have to advertise in chat channels that these things are going on.

If the champs didn’t drop any boxes, then only those would be killed which are close to the golems – although I personally have never witnessed a golem being killed by a champ, but tons of golems are downed by unremoved ice pillars.

Again, I am not talking about the players that don’t have a clue, I am talking about those who deliberately try to havok the event progress to be able to kill champs for a longer time. At the end of the day, it is bad event design IMO since two utterly different player goals clash here.

the only way to fix it is to reduce upscaling. if more players actually made the event succeed quicker, these leeches would be better off helping and making the event end sooner, so they can then do another event.

Not sure how upscaling works but if it works by proximity I’d have to agree, they need to tag in order for upscaling to occur it would reduce the time it takes immensely.

Sadly some events just scale way too badly with number of players.

Temple of Lyssa is good example : the fastest Lyssa priestess kill I ever did was with 4-7 people. When there are 50+ people fighting the event becomes a horrible lag fest that lasts forever and the only thing I want at this point is to find a defense event to go to.

Honestly if done correctly leeching this way can be helpful, weirdly enough. I agree this is toxic behaviour, especially when claiming it and staying on the event area. But that being said, this behaviour wouldn’t even happen if events length stayed roughly the same with more players or at least didn’t expand that badly.
