Ability progression like GW1
I was thinking that I honestly do like character progression but I don’t really enjoy gear progression. Is there a possibility of bringing in quests , dungeon running, pvp or rare monster killing that allows us to get more abilities we can shuffle into our weapon skill slots or even quests to unlock different weapon sets for classes. I enjoyed creating custom skill bars and builds in GW1 and I think that is sorely missing from this game. I know this game has aspirations of being an E-sport but I am not sure if that is even a reality at this point and some variety in skills would be welcomed. Part of the longevity of GW1 was character builds and it just feels kind of limited in this game.
I think people would be more receptive to this type of progression rather than gear grind. The reason being is that these new skills would be balanced against the base skills so that its more of a build variety flavor rather than power creep. You could even tie some of this crap to cash shop and make it profitable. For instance a skeleton skin for necro blood fiend or something etc
This is no different than weapon progression to me. Its just a way to mitigate enemy damage or do more damage, it provides no abstract difference to my character at all outside of using different skills to fulfill the same result. Im goal oriented, this progress serves the same purpose and thus is the same to me.
give me an army to raise, a ship to sail, let me overtake cities, build a castle that actually is mine and gets attacked by enemy npcs, let me find a merchant who sells rare items or just about anything that does not affect my character’s ability to kill things directly.
You know what game I feel really nailed it with progression? Even if they did all 3..levels..ability..and gear..? Everquest, the absolute thing I really loved from everquest was AA points.
I feel Guild Wars 2 should put something like ability points in instead of new tiers of gears. That way we can feel progression, make ability points enhance skills, standard stats, movement speed, what have you, it would make you feel like you are really customizing your character.

Yea that’s the point ability/spell/weapon progression like GW1. More abilities. Why do you even play a game with classes or anything outside of attack if you have such a distilled simplified view on them? All abilities and classes are is “another way to do damage or mitigate damage” as you put it. That doesn’t mean people don’t enjoy different ways to achieve the same result. Other wise whats the point in any form of class or ability? I understand your looking for some sandbox features here but that seems like a pay for the box type of content vs what I am asking for which should be doable before any expansions come out.

I dont want to earn what you are talking about, I think it should just be there as part of the character customization just like vanity. I dont consider any of that progression, it doesnt enhance my character or my quality of game time. You asked for other perceptions did you not? This is my perception. And abstractly I dont see a difference between classes, except that you choose “the engine” to mitigate or do damage. Skill and items are no different, they are affects to your character that affect game play, I would prefer something more if we are talking actual progression and not simply character customization.

Maybe not for you I guess but I suspect that there are a lot of people that miss this part of GW1 and I am appealing to this crowd not you apparently.
If GW1 was not a ghost town right now I would be playing that, all I have to say. Worst thing that ever happen to GW1 was indeed GW2.

I’ll admit hunting down and Capping a boss was fun . What i found even more satisfying though was helping a friend do it
id like to have at least 2 weapon skills for each key to choose from. i wouldnt mind 3, and 4 would be even better ikittennow what i mean…

Yeah you are right, loads of awesome people I know loved GW1. I never got into GW1, bored me to tears. I played gvg with my guild and then went and did other things. I found skill capping and build crafting to be like digital ccg with a graphics update, just creating a deck to deal with whatever was in front of me.
This would be the only thing that makes GW2 interesting but they won’t do it. And Ditton, some skills could be used for certain parts of a dungeon or area. In GW1 you didn’t just choose a random set of skills and be able to clear any part of the game lol they had certain functions, like if an area was heavy with ranged you build against it, if it was heavy melee you build against it. etc.
It just makes the game less boring, that’s all. The current skill/build system is just atrocious idk how anyone can enjoy it sticking to one build forever… to each his own I guess. One of the things I loved about WoW was it used to be pretty great with talent specs, you could just play the way you wanted in vanilla and build as a hybrid if you wanted but now they are extremely linear like GW2 is. Idk why games keep going for linear, it’s not interesting at all. More builds and skills to choose from can only bring good to the game, there will always ALWAYS be balance issues in an MMO so that should not even be a topic of discussion honestly.
If GW1 was not a ghost town right now I would be playing that, all I have to say. Worst thing that ever happen to GW1 was indeed GW2.
I made a new character recently, I’m a level 20 Ranger. Working on getting all the mission s in Tyria completed. You’re welcome to play with me! Aiden Reichbane.

Shoot me a PM when you are on hard mode because I need those on my sin

Thats my point..you see a new obstacle/card player and you build a deck/skill setup to play against it. I prefer a less fluid method of combat because it promotes the idea of using skills in different ways. I do get it though, I do think more skills would be better and at the very least a much shorter cooldown on utility skills.
I think I can see ArenaNet creating more utility skills. I also can see them giving us the ability to choose from specific skills for our weapons. For instance, you can swap out skills 1-3 on sword, but skill 1 will only have 3 skills to choose from, skill 2 the same etc.
However the reasons they chose to have skills tied to weapons in the first place was for balance as well as making sure players are not useless.
I encountered many people in GW1 who would put their skill points in areas that was not benefiting them at all. As well as they had skills on their bar that absolutely did not help them.
Before we hope to see any of these changes though, they have to continue focusing on fixing what is already broken in game with skills not working as well as making sure every profession has traits that make sense.

I have to think balance was the reasoning for why the game is the way it is. Anet’s aspirations of being an esport means that they have to have a limited amount of skills to balance around. I think they were hoping this game would catch on like League of Legends which only has 4 abilities per character. Difference is this game doesn’t have a double digit amount of characters to play to make up for it like LoL so I think they are fooling themselves and hurting the game at the same time for everyone else by not drawing from their experience with GW1.
They would be in a lot less hot water with the player base if we were hunting down new sword attacks for certain builds rather then having to grind out new gear.
Very true OP.
No MMO survives without progression, infact GW1 had a lot of this.
If I had to choose I’d take character progression over gear progression any day.
I’m essentially not playing Gw2 anymore, but I will hang out to see what they do at Wintersday. But I’m also considering going back to GW1. I’ve been lurking at the gwguru forum out of nostalgia lol.
