Hello everyone!

So I was just sitting here, thinking a little on the future of GW2 and all other MMO’S similar to it. I’ve recently started playing GW2 a little since i quit in september or something, and while I do find many enjoyable things with this game, I notice that the one thing I find not to be very fun at all is the combat. This isn’t restricted to GW2 alone mind you. Nearly every other MMO on the market offer a type of combat which I do not feel to be ejoyable, or at least not as fun as it could have been.

This of course is, to me, a huge problem, or rather a bump in the road in my struggle to keep myself hooked to these type of games. I love the community and everything else about MMO’s, so it’s like I want to be able to look past this in order to enjoy the game nontheless.

It’s really only a matter of combat not feeling as dynamic as I believe it should be. Counting out strategic games, I would never want to have to put out with a combat system such as those in MMO’s in any given single player game. In pure action single player games you almost always get a combat system which feels very dynamic, and dependent on reflexes, but also sometimes on luck.

The thing that sets most MMO’s apart from other games in this regard is that they feel so inredibly mechanic, no doubt being a result of them having a heavy emphasis on numbers, calculations and the fact that you “lock on to” an enemy, only to have one thing determing whether you win the confrontation or not, namely numbers, and of course, skill in how to utilize your various moves.

Think of the combat system in, for example, War of the Roses or Chivaliry, or even Mass Effect etc, compared to your typical MMO combat system, and I believe you understand what I mean.

The thing is, MMO’s are starting to move away from this type of combat system. TERA took a first step in this regard. While TERA doesn’t offer the combat system I’m obviously advocating, it at least tries to do something similar. I just recently looked a little on what we so far know about the combat system in the upcoming “Elder Scrolls Online”-game, and I do believe there’s a good chance we will get something similar to what I’m talking about here, which is, to me, a very good thing.

After all, every other Elder Scroll-game before have had an action single player type of combat system, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they want to keep to the roots in their upcoming game. The info we’ve recieved from Alpha-testers seem to further strengthen my beliefs on the matter.

I wonder, would it be possible to, in the future, implement such a combat system into GW2, should it be something the players would want? I mean, technically speaking. Would it even be practical to do such a thing, in terms of development-time and profit for Arena Net? What do you think? I certainly know I would greatly prefer this type of combat in favor of the one currently in effect in GW2. What do you think about this? Wouldn’t it give a more unpredictable, dynamic feel to combat, making the game more fun?

Please, give me your sweet, sweet feedback on my thoughts!

The Elder Scrolls games almost make me think of a first-person shooter combined with an RPG. These types of hybrid games are among my favorite, and I usually try to get my hands on single-player games that fit this. Fallout 3 and New Vegas also fit this description quite nicely.

You talk about emphasis on numbers as though it’s a bad thing. But, as a long time pen-and-paper RPG player, emphasis on numbers is exactly what RPG combat is all about. Without that…well, you have something of an action game, which is not what RPGs are all about.

Also, in answer to your question, it wouldn’t be worth ArenaNet’s time to change the combat system. This is for several reasons, but most importantly, it boils down to cost.

To be honest, I rather like the combat system. It is a hybrid between standard MMO combat and action-combat with all the movement and dodging. It’s the evolution of MMO combat, I think.

Is it perfect? No. But it’s really good and it’s quite well implemented. So, I would see no reason for them to change things up at this point.
