Abuse the report function as a threat?
No it Is absolutely not okay to do that, the guild leader is in the wrong here. If your friend is still interested in reporting him I believe that the devs have access to the chat history. Also, If he did get reported for botting but wasn’t doing it he wouldn’t suffer any reprocussions as ANet investigates this stuff pretty thoroughly before handing out bans.
Sounds like a very immature guild leader.
First of all, it is not normal for guild leaders to make members do anything they request. Your friend can choose to do whatever he wants and he doesn’t need anyone’s permission to enjoy the game the way that he wants.
Secondly, attempting to threaten someone by reporting them as a bot is a violation of what those tools are used for, and I believe it is even stated somewhere that using them in this manner can get you banned. So, that guild leader should probably watch his step.
Thanks for all your replies! I feel reassured.
I will talk to my friend for more details, and most importantly remind him to use screencap from now on when encountering situation like this.
So glad to know that it’s actually not alright and not a common practice.
He should have said “go for it!”
I find it hard to believe that anyone gets flagged incorrectly for botting and spamming bogus reports can get you in trouble. Hell, I’m pretty sure even threatening to do so is against the rules.
He even could have screencapped the convo and reported the guildleader for harrassment. But you have to consider if that is worth the effort as it can lead to a even more hostile relation and it doesn’t really solve anything. Anyway, after that experience I would no longer feel comfortable in the guild and look for another one and put the guildleader on ignore.
We’ve seen that being accused of botting is not an insta-ban, so I don’t see it as any form of threat.
in the list of developers I have the least faith & trust in.
Congratulations ArenaNet!
I know it’s probably normal that guild leaders make members do anything they request. But it’s obvious that my friend isn’t botting as he could join in and follow a zerg group.
So is it actually OK to use “report as botting” as a threat? Any thoughts people? :\
It is not normal and it’s not OK to threaten people with reporting them. In fact, it is against the rules to falsely accuse someone. If they were to report this person, Anet will easily see that this person isn’t a bot and then the guild leader will get warnings/sanctions.
I had it recently that someone threatened to report me. I just laughed at him.

To confirm, it’s not against the rules to accuse someone who turns out to be innocent, just to accuse them when you know it’s not true.
I don’t want anyone to be afraid of reporting bots, etc in case they are wrong and get punished.

Well let’s say we should all be more careful when using the report function. Apparently botting is not the only reports ANet has to deal with, and so we shouldn’t intentionally increase their workload. (Not to mention to do it for making your guildmate slow down in a zerg group.)
And yes. That IS a threat. Just becoz ANet doesn’t perform instant response, doesn’t mean such action has no significance.
How quickly did your friend logged out and how sure was he that the guild leader wasnt just making a joke ? Some people can be pretty sarcastic,in a humorous way but it can be taken the wrong way,not saying it is..just saying it’s a possibility.Just don’t know why anyone would say this in a serious manner.
I’d respond with “Go ahead”, then leave the guild, and continue enjoying the game.
time to switch guilds
Well, apparently this thread flies under my radar undetected until this original poster decided to link me to this post and let me see the response of the community to see how you guys reacted.
So, too bad, I’m going to resurrect this thread and provide what has happened.
Back in the days when bots roams the land of Tyria. My guild decided to stand out to fight against them. So what we did, is we summon a PvE zerg, and we roam around the map to hunt down bot groups.
When we sighted bots groups, I’d then use map chat to let the map knows that we are going to sweep for bots, and with my commander icon on, I’d also let them know the location where I’m about to sweep. After that, I’d summon the zerg to stop, teaching everyone how to set up how to walk, and then marching the group into the bot zerg, and report anyone that ran pass us.
In an area that is crowded with people, to easily identify who’s bot and who is not, is by who’s walking and who is not, and because there are times when I saw someone who just failed at paying attention on my notice, I’d then private message them, giving them the warning that if they keep running with me, instead of walking, they will get falsely reported as bot.
And that’s the whole story, thank you for your time and I’d like to hear your input now that the full story has now been told.
