3 lgiht armor sets. Left is warrior, right is mesmer. They are both dyed in Abyss.
Clearly it looks darker on a warrior, but how is that possible when its the same armor.

Try Midnight Ice. Its darker than Abyss on almost everything. It works much better on cloth surfaces.

Its an interesting anomaly but largely irrelevant since most people arn’t going to look at light armor on a heavy .

A bug maybe?

If I preview any armor with my human necro (with the abyss dye already on her current armor), the preview automatically pick the abyss dye and it look like your warrior (darker) but if I add the abyss dye on the preview with the right-click option, it look lighter.

Abyss dye is actually lighter on Light Armors. Something to do with “armor type” Based on profession. Abyss on Warrior compared to my Elementalist = major difference. On warrior it looks black, on Ele it looks dark gray.

Maybe because one is wearing valid armor for that character, and one is not – they had some serious code issues with mixing and matching armor. It may be residue of that.

Well it seems like they didn’t fix all the issues they had.
I don’t think that midnight ice and fire should look as dark on light sets. After all abyss is the darkest dye and it shouldn’t look gray.

Because it’s “light” armor, so of course it must be lighter! Hahahahaha…ha….yeaaah.

Hello! Dyes can actually be organized into 3 different groups, I believe. They are divided by Material (Cloth, Leather, Metal). Vibrant colors tend to work best for cloth, natural leather tends to be most accurately represented on leather material, and Metallic dyes work best on metal.

Cloth armor tends to be primarily made of cloth, but occasionally includes leather and metal materials in it. In Vibrant colors you can actually find quite a few Midnight colors (like midnight ice and midnight fire).

Abyss is a metallic dye, interestingly enough.

Why do the colors look different? Well, the colors adjust the spectrum that the material is painted in, but there are different things that might be brought out. Objects in games have maps for texture (normal maps), specular maps, gloss maps, that kinda stuff. It affects how light reflects, and that can make some dyes look “lighter”.

I do get that dyes look different depending on the armor/material. I just don’t think the case with light armor and abyss was intended.
Here is another screen. One is dyed Black and the other Abyss.

See the difference? I don’t, they look like the same dye.

I think you just busted Anet in a bug that they haven’t fixed since launch due to putting it down to “different materials distort the dye.”

Abyss is the my biggest disappointment.

A friend who wore medium armor had abyss and I found it to be beautiful. So naturally I thought “I want abyss for my necro!” I was very displeased with the grey I bought.

Also, the arah armor you’re wearing looks a lot darker than mine. I guess the male arah armor is just overall lighter, it’s pretty sad honestly.

Edit; keep in mind this was before you could preview dyes.

This was one of the things they touted during development, that dyes will not always look the same, but are affected by the surface they are applied to. So, a shiny metal surface will look different then rough cloth or leather with the same color. It’s of course more realistic, but unfortunate when trying to compare dye effects on different armors.
