NOTE: This topic is not designed to talk about once stance on ascended items there are plenty of topics for that.

Question is simply this. How much time would you consider acceptable to fully gear a single character?

Personally I think about 100-250 hours is acceptable. Or 2 weeks to 1 month of a decent amount of playtime.

Time is a much smaller factor to me than the method to obtain. Using your example of hours 100-250 would be fine if it was fun, engaging content. 100-250 hours gathering mats via repetitive farming to craft is not to me.

You need to do dungeons, world events, jumping puzzles, WvW, open world exploring to find chests, mini-dungeons, and crafting to get top tier gear…

if you find none of those things engaging and fun content then why in the world are you playing the game? That IS the game…

0 seconds is perfectly acceptable to me, I’m not here to chase stats.

If I were to do a compromise, say 50h per character per build, with multiple methods of acquisition as equal as possible. Anything more than that is unacceptable.

30 minutes of me looking on the trading post to compare prices.
I have 8 characters. Why do I need to spend 200 hours to play them if I want?

I gave up on ever crafting a Legendary. Best decision ever.

I came from WoW, so they trained me to go after gear for months. I’m an extremely hardcore player, so my view of this could be slightly skewed. If I had my way, exotic gear would take at least 2 weeks to obtain, and ascended gear would take at least 2 months to obtain. (I think that’s a fair amount of time, because some gear took me about 6 months to obtain in WoW).

i would say 75 hrs would be acceptable. Just farm for gold. I dont mean champ trains and crap like that just do dungeons that way you will also get some t7 mats. then when you get like 250g + craft to 500 and buy all the pieces you can on the tp, craft the rest and you should be done in 3 days. Not a big deal to get one

Sadly, this is the attitude they’re catering to now, despite saying right from the start that they didn’t want vertical progression like WoW’s.

I think something like 150 or 200 hours would be fine, but by that I mean I think that a new player should be able to buy the game and have maxed stats on their main character when its /age says 200 hours.

Pre-launch, Colin listed things that make MMOs bad. They are all now in GW2.

I expect it will take me months. I’m not one to chase after things, really. I expect the items necessary will be accrued through my regular gameplay. This is acceptable to me. I don’t feel gated from any content I enjoy now, so getting a higher tier of gear is more of a luxury than a need. Each to their own, of course. =)

Or like the 2-3 months of farming the same dungeon week in and week out at the off-chance you could get one piece of the armor set you need to progress to future content. Then a yearly expansion drops and that armor is laughable and now you have to run a new dungeon week in and week out at the chance to get one piece of armor to be able to experience the next set of new content of which you need to farm week in and week out…

At least in GW2 there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. I’d take that over the above any day of the freakin week.

I won’t stop because I can’t stop.

Personally I think about 100-250 hours is acceptable. Or 2 weeks to 1 month of a decent amount of playtime.

Let’s see… at 100 hours per character… I’m a bit over 2000 hours in game, and have 7 L80 characters mostly geared in exotics with some Ascended trinkets. An 8th just got to 80 and is still wearing L55 trinkets and three pieces of L76 armor. 2000/8 = 250+.

What is fully-geared? Do you mean BiS?

Also, how do you view that 100-250 hours spent playing? Do you mean time spent playing the game, or only time spent which directly contributes to gaining the means to get the gear? Your ranges (100-250; 2 weeks to a month) if meant to correlate, involve spending 7.1 to 8.3 hours a day playing. Is that a “decent amount of playtime?”

If I produce the craft-once-a-day mats for Ascended weapons myself (based on ANet’s “two weeks” statement), it will take me 94 weeks just to replace the formerly BiS weapons on those 8 characters. I won’t do the calculations as far as buying the craft-once-a-day mats. The TP prices for those will fluctuate, as will gold accumulation (I’m making a lot less gold now that I’m not doing 4-5 invasions a day).

As someone else stated I would be perfectly happy if BiS gear was just awarded to you when you hit 80. Not because I don’t want to “work” for something, but because what I value working towards is not related to stats. See there is a certain disconnect in players, they often see stats as progress, but in other games those stats usually came with “cooler” looks. In comes horizontal progression, where statistical advantage is of little use, and the “prestige” comes from the difficult to obtain cosmetic items, but many players are unable to shake the old conditioning where more stats is “cooler” because it’s armor also gives better looks. As an exercise, think of all the things you could do to improve your playing/character if you did not need to spend time “chasing” stats. Think about the amount of developer resources tied into making a stat chase versus if they had kept horizontal progression, by now we could have had something else such as replaceable traits that can be hunted down, or evolving weapon skills. The issue with increasing stats as many have figured out is that if you don’t artificially inflate the content that requires it, it becomes largely wasted development time. If you don’t need higher stats to progress or complete content then you don’t need higher stats period. The could have easily introduced ascended with the same weapon stats as exotic but with the infusion slot to put in AR for Fractals. That way if you don’t run fractals there is literally no reason to worry about ascended, but that is not the direction Anet chose, they chose to do a 180 of their original design philosophy and introduce vertical progression, it’s a slippery slope and time will tell how it pans out for them.

Answer: The time it takes to get to level 80 because that was what was originally promised for this game.
