The Achievement Leaderboard point total consists of three figures: Permanent plus Daily plus Monthly Achievement Points.

There are two problems with Monthly ap, which make their inclusion on the Leaderboard unfair.
The first problem is that of resets. Arenanet has at various times ‘reset’ Monthly achievements on both NA and EU. This means that the Monthlies were changed part-way through a month, and the ap already earned was not adjusted. This means that players received differing amounts of Monthly ap that the players had no choice over, and that is unequal and not fair.
The second problem is that of a Monthlies exploit some players took advantage of. The exploit (now closed because Arenanet changed the whole Dailies and Monthlies system) allowed some players to get far more Monthly ap than they should have, so they got more ap rewards in game and higher places on the Leaderboard than they should have.

I propose that to make the Achievement Leaderboard fair to everyone, that the Leaderboard should show ONLY Permanent achievement points.

Players would still have all their ap in game and would continue to gain Daily and Permanent ap as they play, and receive rewards – the only change would be what the Leaderboard shows.

It would be easy for Arenanet to implement this change as they already have all the figures.

Achievements are an important part of the game, and the Leaderboard needs to be accurate for the integrity not only of the players, but for Arenanet too. We should see who actually earned their ap, and this change would allow that.

Please respond to this post, as this issue will be even more important with the release of HoT and the extra Leaderboards Arenanet will implement, and this needs to be resolved.

TL;DR: Make the Achievement Leaderboard fair by only showing Permanent Achievement Points.

The daily and monthly achievement points have a combined cap of 15k. Everyone will get there eventually.

However, there are many “permanent” AP points that are no longer available, namely those from all the temporary LS1 content and past seasonal events.

I don’t think most PvE players care about the achievement board. Unless you started from launch and did everything there is no way to catch up. That is why most PvE players don’t care because who cares who has the most PvE achievement points because it is meaningless anyway. It isn’t a sign of skill or great game play. There are only a handful of people that worry about their spots there on the PvE leader board and well, most of us don’t care about them. But if they want to say hey, “Look at me!” then good for them.

I’m not much of an AP person myself.

But I think the system should allow people that start late to have a chance to reach the top too presumely he play … like 24/7.

The daily and monthly AP is capped anyway so people’ll be able to get those anyway. All those temporary missed events AP are gone for ever.

I think the AP system should have been better designed, but it’s a bit hard to change mid way through. Probably the new mastery system will be similar but better.

It is literally impossible for new players to catch up to the top AP leaders unless a couple things happen:

ANet has stated that they’d like to rework LS1 and bring it back, but that is low priority. To even the AP field they’d also have to bring back the associated achievements.

But there is also the issue of past seasonal events that I doubt they’d ever bring back, you miss those achievements and they’re gone forever.

The daily and monthly cap are combined into a 15k cap, though new players will take significantly longer to catch up as the rate of AP acquisition currently is much slower than in the past, but there is the benefit of the current implementation being significantly less effort, whereas in the past we had to spend upwards of 2-4 hours per day to earn all AP.

It’s a question of fairness – is it fair that players who were affected by the two Monthly problems are higher on the Leaderboard than players who actually earned their ap?

Why should players affected by the two Monthlies problems be hundreds of ap ahead of everyone else?

Fair comment that eventually everyone will catch up and have the same amount of ap as all ap in this game are capped, but it would take many months for that to happen.

This “leaderboard” is a joke.

Oh I am sorry, you dont play since release without ever taking a break?
You dont get to be on the leaderboard, no matter what you do.

PvP/WvW leaderboards make sense because they are reset on a regular basis.

AP leaderboard is just, well I’d rather not say what I think about these people since its probably going to get me mail from the mods

Except for the in game bonuses that we get, AP is meaningless. I honestly don’t see why people care.

Not really worth complaining about imo, the cap is there so it’s pointless to try and “fix” it.

Anet trying to make the leader board “fair” with the caps already slowed AP progress for lots of people who have finished most of the permanent achievements and relied on the dailies to slowly increase their progress to achievement skins.

The truth is new players will never catch up to people playing from release anyway because of previous living stories and festivals being unobtainable now. Even lots of veterans won’t be able to catch up in theory because they may not have grinded many of the repeatable festival APs.

I don’t speak for everyone on the AP leader boards but personally I just want to unlock more of the AP skins, I don’t care about the leader board so I really wish Anet would stop limiting APs. Don’t punish people for playing almost everyday just so people who don’t can catch up to them on some leader board that lots of people don’t even know exists.

I thought all ap was capped in this game, and that the people that had more than the cap in the past got the ap taken from them (eg. Agent of Entropy and Hobby Dungeon Explorer). I also thought, as someone mentioned, that Living Story 1 achievements might be available at some point in the future. These things would mean that most if not all past ap may be obtainable by everyone, if Arenanet can do that.

Only way newer players will catch up is if all the 26k+ players all left the game and never come back forever, and a lot of them have done that. I’m almost at 11,500 AP and I missed quite a few bits of LS 1 and a few other events but I been here since day one myself and taking breaks and missing a few original monthlies/dailies and I’m pretty confortable where I am now. I’m also nowhere near mt 15 k cap.

Its not really an issue for me I just wish there were a lot of good sources besides the tedious WvW and PVP ones left.

No, just the Daily AP (Which includes the now obsolete monthly) is capped. That cap is 15k.

Permanent points are NOT capped in any manner whatsoever, and contrary to it’s name the permanent category includes many points that were only temporary and no longer obtainable. If you missed those temporary points, they are gone forever and therefore means you can never reach the top of the boards.

LS1 might come back, and when they do they might bring back the achievements. Even if LS1 is brought back, there is still a ton of festival achievements that will very likely never come back. This includes previous Halloween, Wintersday, Festival of Winds, stuff like that.

There’s even been some achievements that have been outright retired or removed, so if you did not achieve them while they were available you are missing out on those ones too.

I didn’t even know there was a “Achievement Point” leader board. That is somewhat strange to have in a game, where people have the ability to exploit their way to the top.

It doesn’t concern me either way.

OP – Why on earth do you worry about something so insignificant as the AP Leaderboards..
C’mon it’s not like AP’s are actually worth anything – they are simply an incentive to do things other than sit in LA and play the TP all day.
The AP rank chests are all but junk most of the times anyway, but the bits that can be valuable to your characters/account are achievable for everyone, its not a race, there is no big prize and everyone can get to max AP in game eventually.

Sorry but all I see is “It’s not fair, I wanna be the special snowflake on top of the tree”

Achievement points are an important part of the game, and Arenanet have invested a lot of effort into them.

Some players try very hard to get ap. I respect that some players put in so much time and effort, that’s why I wanted the Leaderboard changed, so that we could all see who were actually the legitimate players of this game. The Leaderboard is there for a reason, and that is the reason, it’s to show who tried hardest and who succeeded.

Many times I’ve seen parties requesting that players had over a certain number of ap, so they are used by many in game as a judgement of experience.

(sorry, I was trying to quote there and I got it a bit wrong)

Permanent points are NOT capped in any manner whatsoever

All ap in the game are capped. It is only the total amount that you can achieve that is not capped. This means that each individual achievement track is capped, but you can still work on more tracks, and Arenanet can add more tracks in the future. Ap are not infinite in this game. It is possible to complete every ap track, and then you would have no more ap to earn at all, until Arenanet introduces new tracks.

The achievement system is pretty screwed up as it is…. caps on the daily but no other time sensitive achievement pools does not make any since. Really the daily is the only hope new players had the means to catch up after veteran players stopped logging everyday. Now it’s just fill your caps first and just coast to stay in the lead.

Personally I rather have daily uncapped and repeatable AP changed into tiered completed achievements. After I hit the cap in about a year I still want to continue unlocking AP chests without having to grind out wvw achievements

takes a drink

I’m sitting at 90% on the leaderboard, which I only know because the thread got me curious. And you know how many prizes that’s won me? Zilch.

The leaderboard is not a measure of achievement, even if it compares achievement points. It is not a measure of skill, as a lot of dungeon-runners will be quick to tell you. It is an indicator of how long a player has been involved with the game and his ability to meet the hoops that ANet asks you to jump through. That’s it.

No one is grading you on your leaderboard standing. You will not be considered more highly for a government post because you finished SAB trib mode. You will not be given a legendary anything for being in the top 100. You don’t even get a title!

Get over yourself. I got straight A’s in high school; how many of you give a kitten? Right. The inability to catch up with the players on the bleeding edge is only a blow to your ego. Realize that some goals are not only untenable but utterly pointless outside of bragging rights, and go have fun elsewhere. You’ll be a happier person.

I would honestly agree with you if I didn’t already know that the leaderboards have absolutely no reward tied to them. It literally is just a list of who has the most AP. They don’t win a prize, they don’t get special treatment, so it is really hard for me to start saying the AP system is unfair when there are absolutely no rewards tied to your rank position.

EDIT: I mean, if there was a leaderboard for highest /age, would you get upset? People that join late could never catch up, but honestly, there’s no reward tied to it, so who really even cares? It’s seems like all you really want is to have a chance see your name on a leaderboard that 95% of players don’t even know exist, for bragging rights I guess?

I won’t stop because I can’t stop.

just coast to stay in the lead.

I think some people keep trying, and for people in the lead it must be very hard for them, as they like to collect ap, but once they have virtually all of it, there’s nothing more for them to get until new tracks are released, it must be very frustrating for them. I respect and admire people who actually try hard, and the Leaderboard is a way to see who did that (or it would be, if it wasn’t a sham).
