A while back someone posted their 15k achievement points by mass salvaging (or w/e they did) because for some reason there are achievements that reset in this game infinitely. Keep in mind this was only like a month or two after the game released.

In WoW for example if my character has 15k+ achievement points it shows I’ve done a crap ton of content, I’ve collected mounts, pets, played for YEARS, raided, killed rare spawns, obtained legendary gear, pvp’d, participated in events, etc.

Why would I actually hunt achievements when someone could get even more than me by sitting in LA? It kind of defeats the purpose imo. I can’t even see my own title displayed by selecting my character, as there is no option to select myself or see my own name.

There are far bigger problems with this game, I just felt like pointing out how useless they are so maybe the infinitely resetting achievements will be stopped because it REALLY takes away from it all.

If someone platinum’s a game on PS3 it shows me they’ve conquered the entire game, done every achievement, etc. Of course it means something… otherwise what would be the point of it all?

Or you could play a mesmer and have to turn off titles (achievement based) so you dont get focused down in pvp because your clones STILL DONT SHOW TITLES OR MAP COMPLETION MAKING THE TITLE PAINT A HUGE TARGET ON YOUR CHARACTERSASS SAYING HIT ME IM NOT A CLONE

They aren’t pointless.

Lets say the person you mentioned got 5k AP true actual game content, and the other 10k from mass salvaging. Salvaging gives 2 AP for every 200 items salvaged. That means he should have salvaged 1 million items to get that.

AP gives a good indication of how much a no-lifer or shady person someone is.

yes they are, probably just show to people how old your char is or how active…because clearly if someone in your dungeon party has 5k archivements points you would think…he must be more experienced over a guy with 500 points only

I’ve no idea what Platinum’ing a game means, but I’m assuming it means completing all achievements. Completing achievements is different than amassing achievement points. Those numbers next to the achievement mean nothing to me, other than that person must play a lot (which still doesn’t tell you anything other than they’ve played a lot).

I’m not actually sure if we can check this in GW2, but I always found the achievement itself to be the actual achievement (versus the points it grants you). I mean, I have a little over 1000 achievement points from the game, though I really only consider my two jumping puzzle achievements (Vizier’s Tower and the Wintersday puzzle) to be the real achievements I have.

The Toypocalypse Cancelled is another I’d consider an achievement, versus just a ton of daily achievements. (And killing Nightmare Court, Risen, etc… to just be standard “You do a lot of murderizing of things.”).

That and the achievements that grant titles seem to be some of the harder ones to obtain, which is why I sort of figured achievement hunters would go for collecting titles. (In Aion, I know a lot of people would collect titles… mainly because some of the titles meant something).

But I might not truly get the other side of it. I view achievements as something to do alongside play the game and they aren’t my primary focus.

I would have loved a system of getting in game pets or town clothes from achievement points. And I noticed they tend to not give you titles like the one to kill 1000 critters.

Achievement points =/= skill points.

Achievement points are glorified nerd points that represent, in most ways, time played. And cannot be spent towards anything.

Skill points are the never ending cycle of level gains after 80, that are a key part of using the mystic forge be it material / lodestone upgrades or for bloodstone shard concerning a legendary weapon.

You’ve spent skill points. Not achievement points.

Judging from this thread I think it’s safe to say that the majority of the player base wants some form of meaningful achievement point progression. Maybe add bonus damage per 1000 AP? Constant Speed boost? Anything useful, really.

Achievements and achievement points are brilliant. If you look at it from the perspective of a developer, at least.
All you have to do is add an achievement for completeing a simple, grindy or sometimes downright outlandish task with in the game which otherwise offers no reward, and you’ve created a bunch of low-quality non-content that gamers froth at the mouth for these days, and it takes far less time to create than other kinds of meaningful content.

Take crash landing for an example. It gives you no practical reward, in fact it can cost you a repair fee, and yet people are lining up to be pancaked by a falling dragon.
And I pity the person who feels like they need to kill 1000 giants for their achievement completionism.

Achievement points have no value in any sense, so the idea that someone is “devaluing” the system by grinding repeatable achievements is really a non-issue. Your arbitrary points are still of equal value to theirs, cause 500×0 equals 0 and 1500×0 still equals 0.

Achievement points are useless.

I wish there would be at least some fun titles to aquire. The ones right now are kinda underwhelming.
GW1 had some really interesting ones, where you could display your progress, or what you have archieved. The ones right now are not really reflecting that.

The best i have seen so far was in Warhammer Online, where you had a nice selection of archievments/titles to put out at the end, which were really fun i have to admit.

No you just completely missed my point and have no idea what achievement points even are obviously. But hey, I’m just angry so what do I know.

And on PS3 a patinum trophy means they completed every other trophy (PS3 version of achievements) meaning they did everything possible in the game pretty much. Sorry if that was confusing.

Btw I am not elitist, it’s just that casuals completely disregard 99% of things in an MMO because they simply don’t care about them, then why even post?

I remember back in my day WAY back on the Atari, and NES, when there was no such things as these “Achievement Points”…

Let’s face facts here, achievements, trophies, etc. Anything to do with a game awarding these is pretty much pointless. So someone spent all his time basically “cheating” his way to the top? Big deal, did he win some sort of trophy, or receive a prize of 1 million dollars? Nope, he’s simply someone who just plain and simple cheated the achievement system. There’s nothing special about that person, nor anyone else who feels these actually mean anything. Achievements, and trophies are simply meant to be in place, to give people who spend way too much time on their hands, play video games all day long, some sort of false sense of achievement. However, at the end of the day, you’re still the same person who spends way too much time on video games, and actually accomplished nothing worth while mentioning. A fake reality, with fake accomplishment.

It’s a game. End of story. You’re not doing anything anyone should actually care about, and if getting in game achievements makes you feel self accomplished, something is terribly wrong there.

Like God…
Only Better…

Achievement points are useless.

^Also missing the point, and I disagree with your opinion.

I also played NES, genesis, etc. what do those not having achievements have to do with MMO’s and this topic? Nothing.

And they are not pointless if done right. It makes an experienced player stand out, but in GW2 you can’t even compare achieves or see what people have done so yea I guess pretty pointless in this game, just like I said.

You’re just yet another casual. I feel like I’m talking to a brick wall here.

Well that wouldn’t fix the problem because using methods like mass-salvaging would be extremely easy and those skins wouldn’t be very special.

The problem is those infinitely resetting achievements.

It would if you needed the Achievement first.

True. In WoW I get special mounts, pets, titles and such for certain achievements.
