Does anyone else feel that the game has become centered around achievements now?
Even the login screen has been changed to show achievements.
Originally, achievements where just something extra, a way to keep track of what you did or just something earn a title.
Now it seems the whole game is based on getting achievements and the loot that goes along with them. Personally, I do not care for this and feel it cheapens the game, anyone else feel this way?

It still does the above. People like to keep track and earn them a little bit more than they used to. If you think about it, it’s a nice move on Anets part because it gets people out to experience parts of the game they may not have before even if only to earn enough points to get the next chest on their list. Some people wouldn’t even bother with jumping puzzles if it were not for the achievements, some may find that they really enjoy them due to having done one.

Yes to a degree- I have never cared about achievements.
People who did them before did so because they cared -not because of shinies.

The reward system is not a bad thing
Shinies are not a bad thing but people being what they are, now ignore content for the sake of the shinies.
That is a bad thing and should not be encouraged in my opinion

I was really startled last night when I completed some stuff only to hear a loud jingly sound to signal an achievement- this I really don’t like.
It reminds me of Pavlov to be honest and i wish I can turn it off.

The banner on your screen can be toggled back to what it was before, I did so immediately.

The thing is the game is the same as it always was, it is not centered around achievements – people are now centered around achievements

So people asked for achievements to be rewarding. Anet obliges with an overhaul to the system.

And now people are asking for achievements to not be rewarding and to just be historical and novelty to say “I did that”

Just shows you can never please anyone.

^^This.

I have now done all of the non time-limited jp’s once and have no intention to repeat them unless they start dropping some useful stuff. I’d rather be working towards a legendary than falling from high places. The points for JP’s seems a bit low compared to the living story events as well (which are often much easier to do).

I agree. And I don’t like the reasoning behind it (people playing more regularly translates into more Gem Shop purchases). The fact that destroying 150 dragon pinatas (pressing F 150 times in Lion’s Arch, where the only threat of death is falling from a high elevation) is worth more Achievement Points than equipping THREE legendary weapons says it all.

i’m guessing you guys didn’t play guild wars 1….a lot of the armor in that game was locked behind reputation achievements, kinda like how WoW used be…or behind an insane amount of gold…like tier 3 cultural was at first

be glad reputation farming hasn’t show up in this game and it is just overall achievement score

also, achievements was basically end-game in GW1

The achievements are the reward system. Before, it was just grind gear and do nothing special. Although not that memorable, the achievements have you do special tasks to get rewards as opposed to just farm cof p1 to buy w/e it is you were after.

It would be better to actually make a story line that can be completed ON THE PLAYERS’ TIME but temporary achievements seemed to of been a more cost efficient alternative.

I will say, getting achievements was a lot more fun before they added rewards. Feels slightly like a chore now.

To much of anything can be a bad thing. It seems more and more, when the devs make a change instead of tweaking it, they go in with a sledge hammer. I remember working with a women who found out she could change the color of text in a document. After that, everything she did looked like an explosion in a paint factory with every paragraph a different color. The achievements remind me of that. Once the devs added them, it seems that is all they can think about now and just don’t know when to stop. It’s the same with culling, they can’t seem to adjust it, it’s either all or nothing with no in between.

So whats exactly is the problem with loot and achievements? As far as I know, you can get no more than 3 unique sets, 1 weapon and 2 armor sets. What’s so troubling about that? It rewards people for dedicating their time in the game. And what’s better than showing that you did ‘this’? By having these unlimited skins.

Anet is making lots of achievements so that newer players can go for these skins. Many of the old players have a lot of points made up from dailies. So it’s a ‘catch-up’

This game needs more achievements, not less. I can’t see the argument otherwise.

Who said anything about skins? I have no clue what your going on about as your replies don’t seem to make any sense. Are you even replying to the correct thread? You seem to want to argue, and when I don’t take your bait you try something else.
Nice try, but if your going to keep trying to change the subject and derail the conversation, I am not even going to bother replying to you any longer as it’s a waste of time.

he is talking about the Zenith weapon skins and the radiant/hellfire armour you get as rewards for achievement points.
Which wasn’t the point of the OP but now at least you know that the two can be tied together

I don’t see that much has changed really. Of course having a faster cycle for the living story means more potential achievement points in a shorter time – that is a good thing.
Having separate categories – for example the gauntlet – is in my view also a good thing, I can still complete the “story” part and ignore content I might not be able to or want to finish.
Having a basic daily living story achievement to ensure everyone will be able to get one reward – also a good thing.
Having an option at the log in screen (personally I don’t see the use in that one yet) is also a good thing – if you don’t like it just change it back.

The achievement system (imo) is meant as a reward for aging accounts, if I want to get there faster I certainly can – but there is no need stressing over it.

The system is getting refined and becoming better, maybe that is why some perceive it as more dominant right now, until you get used to it.

At the end of the day I make myself my own pressure. I don’t really do dungeons, if I felt I needed that one armour set – I might not have fun doing the dungeon for it. Contrary to the dungeons I don’t have to focus on achievement points, they will come, just the amount changes perhaps according to what I do or don’t do.

“Whose Kitten is this?” – “It’s a Charr baby.”
“Whose Charr is this?”- “Ted’s.”
“Who’s Ted?”- “Ted’s dead, baby. Ted’s dead.”

I think they messed up from the start when it comes to player recognition, then in an effort to fix this they implemented a half kitten AP Reward system that they could easily retroactively dish out.

I like the AP Reward chest idea though but make it so you get a chest at every 2500 points and fill the chest with stuff we actually want. Like some gems, gold, a character expansion slot, bank space, a bag slot, etc…..

Additionally I feel they should add badges or ribbons under the player names for major accomplishments that only load and show when you select another character. For example if you think of a Private in the Marines he may have one ribbon if he’s lucky. Then look at a Sargent Major in the Marines and he walks tilted to the left because he’s got so many ribbons and medals on his chest. You think to yourself “wow that guy has been places and seen some kitten”. Could have worked in GW2 and solve the vertical / horizontal progression problem at the same time. Right now I have a million titles and can only display a single one. Nobody knows but me that I have multiple champ titles, dungeon master, sanctum sprinter, clock tower, Liadri 8 orb achievement, ranked top 250 in sPvP team Leaderboards, etc…..and nobody will ever really know but me. It would be awesome if I could select another player go “Dannnnng that guy has done it all…” Now all I think when I see someone wearing Radiant or Hellfire armor that he’s completed dailies everyday and agent of entropy + cof p1 dungeon frequenter…..

Achievement points were a bad idea from the get go. Just the other day in LA there was a guy shouting the following:

lfm AC all paths. People under 5000 AP will be kicked!

And drama ensued…

My apologies, it seems I interpretted your “loot” comment as the same thing as the chests you get upon reaching certain achievement points, and the ensuing “loot” or skins you get from them, among other items.

But it seems you are talking about the loot you get from completing these meta events?

Nonetheless, you are making a big fuss over something minor. There’s nothing game changing about a mini, an infinite tonic or a cutscene journal. It’s a reward for seeing through the end and completing content. It’s a token that shows “I was there”

Why does it or should it matter if the achievements reward you loot?

And what exactly do you propose? Remove achievements? Reduce every single release to 1-2 achievements?
