Currently, the commander tag doesn’t mean anything except that the person with said tag knows how to make money. I’ve noticed that the commander tag sometimes comes in pretty handy in PvE. Also, there are some people who only like to do WvW and those who only like to do PvE or people who play one character in WvW and another in PvE.

So my suggestion is that the commander tag be split into a PvE version and a WvW version, with separate requirements for buying the PvE version and the WvW version. Of course, commanders should only be able to display PvE commander tags in PvE and should only be able to display WvW commander tags in WvW. I also suggest that all commander tags be refunded when this change is implemented so that all commanders are held to the same standard. If you have any comments regarding the WvW commander tag, please see my Add WvW Rank Requirement to WvW Commander Tag thread.

PvE Commander Tag:
Clearly, we need some way to ensure commanders actually know what they’re doing in PvE. I think it’s actually very possible to raise the quality of the average commander if you set some kind of requirement they have to meet in order to buy their commander tag. I suggest that world events chests (such as from Frozen Maw, Claw of Jormag, Tequatl the Sunless, and orrian temple events) should have a chance of a dropping a “commander token” which would be required to buy a PvE commander tag. To buy a PvE commander tag, the player would need a certain amount of these commander tokens, in addition to 50 gold and maybe some laurels (as the PvE equivalent to Badges of Honor). Since the tag is being split in two, each tag then has half the functionality so theoretically, it should also have half the cost. The chance of getting a commander token from a world event chest should also be higher for more difficult world events than for easier world events (Frozen Maw as opposed to the Temple of Balthazar, for instance). This would mean that we could be sure PvE commanders actually know how to do and have participated in world events (the situation in which commander tags are usually displayed in PvE). This would clearly raise the bar and improve the quality of the average commander in PvE.

Why bother at this point as there would still be grandfathered in commander that have their tags?

That is exactly why I suggested refunding all commander tags upon implementing this. That way all commanders would lose their tags and get their money and Badges of Honor back. They could of course buy a PvE commander tag after getting enough commander tokens.

Nope nope nope and nope. Especially as you mentioned RNG and chance.

Servers learn quickly and don’t follow junk commanders very long.

I think commanders should be voted in by players. Best way to make sure commanders are actually good and not people who can just buy their way to it.

Hah that’s true, I’m surprised you still bother with this game.

:) Commander tags are like purchased rank. Some will know how to command, some will learn to command, and some will be shot by their own troops.

When I’m cute, I can be cute. But when I’m mean, I can be very very mean.

The only Commander tags that should be on the PVE side should be acquired from guilds and shouldn’t be able to be seen by anyone outside the guild.

Commander tags should only be got by public voting. Although most commaders seem to be pretty community aware, theres one or two that are just trolls. I think community voting a person up or done, would be the way to.

When person receives “x” amount votes, they get their tag, they can keep receiving votes/or lose them…

Anyone who bought tags, should simply get their money back.

I don’t know if a voting system would be possible to implement in game.
but a right click on the person “vote as commander: then up or down” .. or maybe only ups, I don’t know.

But I do think this would be a better indicator. Possibly.

The way it is now, is simply “I’ve been in the game so much longer than you and know how to get the best loot/quickest”.

I am one that believes commander tags should somehow be earned, rather than just purchased. However, I don’t feel that there should be any RNG involved in that earning. You complete a certain amount of skillful, predetermined play, and earn it. But, that’s just me.

Personally, I never bothered to purchase a commander tag, as it felt like a waste of gold. I don’t really do anything often enough that would require me to pop one. Although, I find it humorous to be hollered at in wvw for attempting to direct traffic (no commander present, and people just running around like chickens with their heads lopped off, just UGH), and not have my tag “popped”. Which then proceeded into “go buy a tag so we can see you” shrug No thanks.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.
