Adopt WildStar's Holo-Wardrobe System
“No additional fees”? Wrong game forum.
The skinning system in game is meant to be an income source, even with commonly available in-game skins. That’s the purpose of the transmutation charges. Sure there are multiple ways to get them for free and they are one if not the cheapest items you can buy from the Gem Shop. But they are still a Gem Shop item.
Could one day we see it go the way of other nussance fees like armor repair and trait respec fees, maybe but those use in game coin and not gems. I guess it matters on how many have been bought from the Gem Shop. Considering they are found in the new Account starter kits, I doubt it will be anytime soon. They are just too good of an item to bundle in kits and rewards. They don’t lose too much giving them away and they are useful enough that the player receiving them are unlikely to not think of them as a reward.

Wildstar’s Wardrobe is actually mostly inferior to GW2’s unless they revamped a bunch of it in beta, you can tell me if so, as I’m going off P2P version since my friend gifted me time recently and I played it back when humble bundle was giving it out.
One thing I want badly from it is the ability to hide any armor piece. GW2 stopped short of allowing only 3. Tranny charges are easy to get and allow a reasonable income source for Anet; what we get for trade off on that is account-wide dyes with unlimited use. Lotta those Dyes in Wildstar are too expensive to change for my innocent newbie char. Their wardrobe also doesn’t keep track of skins if you’re collecting and allows you to add repeats, which basically wastes a chunk of your money if you didn’t search through your skins to see if you had it already~ GW2’s collects everything for free and doesn’t allow dupes. Wildstar allows the mixing of heavy/light/medium that couldn’t be bothered with in GW2 as well. GW2 used to allow it in preview window. Majority of the mixes worked beautifully but they don’t wanna put those choices in our hands to do what we will.
They can both have things to learn from eachother~ Anet plz -.- let me hide my glowy Sylvari’s medium armor chest piece and stahp being shy about armor tier mixing. :<
It’s not just wildstar, most MMOs do it. F2p,b2p, or p2p.
They basically have a costume/cosmetic tab where you can just swap at will. No item cost or charge.

So like a lazy tax?

Only for those who don’t get enough charges from the free sources to satisfy their customization needs. I have over 100 mostly free ones so far from login rewards, map clears and achievement chests. And I have only two active characters and I only have map complete on one. But because I have so few, I am very careful about using them.
So yes it’a s tax, one I choose not to pay if I can avoid it.

whats wrong with gw2 system? I think its fantastic
its free and account wide, and transmutation charges are easy to come by that you can switch armor skins freely and not worry about being able to.
outfits are free to wear without transmutations also
Except if you are coming in from an MMO where skinning is free, it can be a bit of an issue.

I have a load of charges, just mapping and PvP gives you loads, I’m sitting on 50+. They won’t add the pay coin to unlock skins as they are tied to achievements. Nice thought, but it will not go anywhere.
The wardrobe in GW2 is account wide also.
