After 5 months
After 6 months I enjoy this game tremendously. I already have two legendaries and working on two more.
But then again people here would probably just call me a gold buyer

I agree, and disagree with some of the points.
Even though it seems that no one run anything except Fractals, I’ve seen a lot of people standing outside, and looking for people for Ascalonian Catacombs, Caudecus’s Manor, Twilight Arbor, Crucible of Eternity and Honor of the Waves. Only Citadel of Flames and Sorrow’s Embrace seems ignored for me.
About the Renowned Hearts, I love them more than typical quests. I hate picking something up, and then run off, to backtrack all the way to the questgiver to get my reward. Now of course, you will have to backtrack anyway if you want to buy anything from the karma vendor, but it is not needed if you just want experience and to continue without going back.
The combat, I think is really fun, but that is of course depending on what profession you are playing, and with what weapon set you use. For example, I think Guardian with Greatsword is the most boring thing ever. The only thing you do is to mash your buttons to give out the most DPS possible, compared to Hammer where every skill does something unique. The first one is the auto-attack, the second is a slam, the third is a snare, the fourth is a launch, the five is a ward which keeps enemies either outside, or inside.
What I meant is that Greatsword is only for damage and nothing else (Obviously because it is a DPS weapon), it got no tactical thinking to it.
The things I agree on, is the loot. The loot is boring, and nothing special, they really boost it up. They shouldn’t really just give us rare items all the time, so the price for globs just skydive down, but perhaps they should add what original Guild Wars had, collector NPCs. Collector NPCs traded certain stacks of something (Let’s say for example, 250 Boring Fish Scale of Boringness) and traded you a really cool item, either it be drinks, food, or special looking armour.
That’s something I would like.
This is by far the worst leveling system in an MMO that I have seen. You get 1 heart quest which is like a normal type quest as you will, then the rest is farming events in that zone. There are always the same 3 event styles for all zones too. Protect/Escort, Hold off the enemy, kill a boss. Extremely repetitive.
Please don’t say you can pvp, craft, etc. Not everyone likes to do those things. It is so easy to complete a zone 3+ levels below what you should be. I finished the lvl 22 zone or where the lvl 22 zone starts (forgot which way) but I was level 17. So I couldn’t do my story quest and had to either keep farming 5 levels of the same events or have to travel to a whole new 1-10+ zone to keep leveling. Sorry but some people don’t want to have to go to a whole new zone to catch up.
That’s like having to go from Elwyn forest to the gnome starting zone.
Either way all mmo’s quest system seems the same, but at least it works and it gets you to level and be zone ready for each zone.
Compared to a lot of other MMOs, GW2 is a breath of fresh air and I love it for that. I’m still enjoying the game and have a level 80 character working on a Legendary. I like the dungeons although I’m a bit bored with fractals and don’t really see why Agony was introduced.
I’m getting into WvWvW and am enjoying doing World Completion. Looking forward to future updates.
If it were me I’d do what LOTRO did and drop Agony as an unnecessary mechanic, but it’s not a big deal and the rest of the game is great.

No one runs CoF? Are you joking? Its the quickest dungeon to run (paths 1+2) and there’s always a party going. Use GW2LFG and youll get a party in no time. Oh, and for the record I have never…yes NEVER….spent more than ive made from any dungeon because youre still earning tokens providing you complete.

I have no problems with leveling, I am always at the same level with the zone, and my personally story, I’m never too low, and I’m not too high for the zone either. But that is because I do a lot of things. The game has put up a lot of stuff to do, it’s not really the game, or ArenaNet fault if you choose to ignore everything that makes you gain experience.
Know my problem with the game? PvE—There seems to be no character progression in it at all, because ANet said “no gear grind” or whatever. Yes, a gear treadmill is bad in other mmos and excludes a lot of players from raiding or doing certain dungeons. In Guild Wars 2, there’s nothing really.
You hit 80 and all the explorable dungeon rewards are to be the same. Some have power/precision/crit gear while other don’t, but that’s about the only difference other than looks. Why am I getting this gear to begin with? To get a little stat increase and kill things a bit quicker, or to get into FoTM to grind out even more useless gear?
That’s how I see it. I like the game, but it lacks and is missing it’s stick.
I think the largest mistake was fractals being added to the game. Anytime " ONE " area drops more loot or better items then any other spot in the game players will gravitate to that spot. I’ve seen it in just about any game, MMO or not. I’m hoping the next updates correct that but I’m not entirely sure it will.
Dungeons – I hate them with a passion. I’ve only done a few and quite honestly I was more glad when they were done and over with then I was of having been able to actually play them. It isn’t something I would even consider fun. They could add better drops, chests or whatever but again I wouldn’t even bother because they are simply not fun in any sense of the word. I guess if you enjoy beat downs and being able to thump your chest and say " I beat it " more power to you. Finding groups is also a royal pain and as bad as the days when people spent looking for a healer so they could do a run. It’s just replaced with " you need to be level 80 and have good gear or your not in my group ". There’s a lot wrong with dungeons or shall we say things we can improve on.
I would like to think there would be two instances for dungeons. One this ubber powerful , smack down, bashing group thing some people seem to enjoy and many absolutely hate. The second would be one where a single player can go in, experience the story, get a small reward for their trouble and be done with it. Aside from the story I see no reason to want to even do them. It was a mistake to make destiny’s edge story a part of all of those.

This part of what you posted is exactly why I still play and enjoy the game. I simply don’t play or do the things I don’t enjoy. Hate P vs P, don’t do it. The open world itself is enough and something which myself and my guild fully immerse themselves in. We’ve also found that W vs W vs W and many of the other things are just added content we can do without. Part of the problem I see with a lot of gamers which seem to burn out or have said they have done " everything " have not. In-fact many just level as fast as they can, ignore the story and what’s around them, get to level 80, hit a few of the end game dungeons and areas and bam there’s nothing else. That couldn’t be farther from the truth and if that is your play style you’re missing a lot of what GW 2 offers.
I can say this though having played GW 1 and GW 2 for probably far longer then a few players is that Arena.net has always strived and listened to it’s players. The original GW 1 game evolved into something which didn’t even resemble what it was when it launched. Improvements, added content, and time made it something even better. The ground work has been laid for something even better here and you even agreed this could be your MMO so give it time. I fully expect this game to evolve and change as well, it’s what they do. Also not sure how you play as a player but a good guild or group of friends adds a whole new dynamic to the game. I suggest finding a good guild as well or building a good friends list. As typical with most MMO’s not all players are exactly helpful so find a good group.

On every character I’ve leveled, I’ve never been able to keep up with the level curve. Not once. I do all hearts, all POIs, all vistas, all waypoints. I do story quests at my level and gather all crafting mats I see. I also do every single event that pops up anywhere near me and kill all enemies that are in my path.
Even still, I end up finishing the zone under leveled. I was just working on a warrior a couple days ago. I finished the 1-15 zone as a fresh level 13. I did all that I mentioned above in the process. So I had to take my warrior to another 1-15 zone and work on doing everything there as well so I could get caught up.
Unless you do WvW on the side, you simply cannot keep up with the level curve. And for some of us, that just isn’t possible since it runs terribly. Once you get up to dungeon levels you can pick up dungeons to supplement your leveling and suddenly find yourself way ahead of the leveling curve. But until then, you have to basically stand around and farm events to keep up.

I don’t think you’re a gold buyer, you just enjoy the game more than I do at the moment. For that I kind of envy you. As I said, I’m actually looking forward to people saying that I’m wrong because you can do X and Y and Z for in the game if you’re looking for fun or reward or teamwork.
I seem to enjoy grinding than most people do, having been brought up playing Korean MMOs.
This game has grind (as all MMO’s do), so if people out there don’t like grind, I think they need to reassess if they want to play MMOs or go play a skill-based game like RTS’.

I recently came to a similar conclusion as the OP – I found myself playing with no really enjoyment anymore so I simply uninstalled the game. I’m not saying I’m done with it, but for now I’m enjoying playing some other games. I’ll continue to visit the boards and look forward to seeing what ANET has in store for future updates as ultimately that will determine whether I return or not.

Hearts are actually worse than quests imo, dynamic events are good though. I much more enjoy questing (hearts) in GW1/WoW.
I’m interested in why you think this. I can see no possible reason that anyone would think Hearts are worse than WoW quests.

Maybe its your server but I have to agree with this guys, certainly on my served (Desolation) CoF is by far the most popular dungeon. As for the spend factor, even if Ive joined with a poor group and we’ve had a couple of wipes, dont think Ive ever come away and not made at least 3 times more than Ive spent (plus tokens, karma)

Because in WoW I can actually accept and turn in a quest collecting rewards ranging from weapons, armor, gold, and reputation that gets me access to unique pets, mounts, and gear. I don’t like the karma system in GW2, and the hearts just magically showing up and getting completed without so much of a turn in takes away from the experience for me.
I like conventional quests and events, but hearts are just a dumbed down version of conventional quests. Oh sure, I can ‘choose’ to either fix some traps or kill mobs but honestly I just go for the fastest route on any heart to get completed because they all have crappy rewards and are boring. The ‘choices’ it gives you aren’t anything revolutionary lol.
Every WoW quest opens up with a story and a reason why you are doing what you are doing.

Well if you don’t ask why, it’s just a mindless grind isn’t it? I always read the quest text… it really adds to the experience and you’d be surprised how much detail Blizz puts into them. But I guess a lot of people just ignore them, because screw reading lol

So far, from my perspective, they have not listen at all. About the game, the dungeons, the PvE, the WvW, the PvP…and Fractals. You go read those unofficial forums and you will get what I mean.
This is what I observe, doesn’t mean ANet does not listen, they probably are, but from my own observation, they have not been listening.
In my honest opinion. I may be proven wrong, I don’t know. We shall see.
For those are are struggling to find parties for dungeons, use GW2LFG.com to join up with players from other servers. All you have to do is be on the same map to get in and play with others. Being on a baron server is no longer an issue.

After 5 months I sort of expected Anet to be a communicating caring developer, and not kill everything with silence. We’re halfway through January, there’s been no mention of an update at all. PvP has had NO useful updates. Dungeon rewards are still terrible, and most dungeons are just REALLY poorly designed. Professions are littered with bugs, and players are quitting left and right.
But not a word. Communication could and would save a lot of borderline-quitting players. But none of that.
My biggest concern is that there are not enough rewards in this game. Essentially it has become a dungeon crawler to get ‘better’ gear to complete the same dungeons that we could already complete with lesser gear.
Also it has a huge cosmetic side. Crawl dungeons for tokens, to buy gear, to transmute into a new look. There is no sense of “Yes I just beat a boss and hoping for a good drop!”.
When I run a dungeon, I know exactly what I am getting every time. And to be frank, it’s boring.
Games are a lot like life in respects to you get out what you put in. If you feel you have gave it your all and still not having fun. Maybe its time to find a new game.
I have found I have more fun when I’m playing with friends regardless of the content that I’m playing.
I’ve been playing from day one and still have not experienced all the content in this game. I’m really not sure how people are losing interest.

I agree with the OP GW2’s biggest flaw is the pve boss mechanics. They have artificial difficulty and artificial immunities and the fights basically are all just stand at range and dodge or get one shotted. For all the great things they did with the game this is definitely its weakness.
The dungeons in this game arent fun at all and for all the things that they could do with the combo mechanics to make them interesting they went the lazy route and basically caused most of these mechanics to just be useless which hurts a lot of professions when trying to find groups.
The thing they screwed up the most on was introducing fractals the way they did. It made Orr a ghost town and basically gimped people that didnt rush to 80 at launch, since they basically penalized people that werent yet 80 after the fact with DR, stealth nerfs on drop rates etc.
I know they said they are changing the system and adding other ways to get fractals etc., but overall I agree with most of the sentiments here. I also dont really feel I should be required to use third party sites to play a game. Yes it helps but if that many people are using it its an obvious serious flaw in their design.
Going to say plainly I agree with everything in the OP. I have not logged in a month and did not bother with the Christmas event grind-off. I might have gone for the titles and such, but after getting all the titles in Guild Wars I and not getting anything decent for it to carry over besides some shiny clothes, I promised I wouldn’t bother with Guild Wars 2 titles.
Here it is plain and simple – I played Guild Wars 1 for FIVE YEARS. You could just do more in that game and it wasn’t dependent on who you had running around with you. Slaying a mob meant that mob stayed dead, you could enjoy the eye-candy more without worrying about things jumping out from behind the bushes again. You could actually RUN through zones to areas you wanted to reach without getting flash mobbed.
Most of all, in Guild Wars 1 — you got to be creative. You could build 4-man teams, 2-man teams, or even solo some content if you worked hard enough and got creative in your loadout. There was incentive to get an ALT built up because a build like a 55-Monk, or Ranger/Ritualist farmer, or a Minion Master meant you might actually be ablet to do something unique with them. You could solo parts of the underworld to farm, run a buddy to another instance for a little cash, farm a whole slate of green weapons that you could actually SELL and feel like you were going somewhere.
I played from release until Thanksgiving about four hours a day – I never saw a pet drop. Never saw anything remotely useful drop. Never completed a dungeon that wasn’t a grind to get a group moving on. Never ran to an Ori node without 100 mobs on my tail. Never saw the point of repeating overly difficult content for dungeon tokens I MIGHT be able to salvage for an ecto. Almost never saw the crafting mats I needed drop. Never got a precursor in the forge.
I basically never felt like I did anything remotely useful. Nothing in the game was able to provide me the feeling I had in Guild Wars. I was basically taking up space.
So I left and haven’t been back.
General PvE content could be so good if the fighting mechanic wasn’t built on the dodge feature and if mob density wouldn’t be so over the top. It’s not just Orr or other end game zones. It’s everywhere. My characters can’t spit without aggroing another three baddies in addition to those they are already fighting. Having an aggressive beast standing at every square centimetre won’t make a game seem more exciting or give off the illusion of content. It just makes the designers look like sadists. The fights are not interesting at all. Since most abilities have long cooldowns fighting monsters comes down to doing an initial high burst then auto-attacking the rest of the time while trying to dodge the myriad of debuffing single target or AoE moves – blindness, confusion, knock-back, stun, cripple, bleed, burn, slow, etc. With only two consecutive dodge chances this becomes old really fast.
Crafting is a waste of time and effort. You can’t craft all stat combinations (what happened to making all playstyles equally viable?) and what you CAN craft require so much farming or money that it’s just not worth it. I remember that in other MMOs crafting was one of my favorite aspects. I went around the world each day and collected materials from nodes or by killing certain animals and then used the collected material to craft something nice. It was relaxing in the sense IRL fishing is relaxing. What happens in GW2? I try to go out collecting from nodes but all the ornery creature in viewing distance jumps on me on the way to the node and on the way back. Because respawn time seems to be 0,5 seconds. Well, okay. I guess I’ll just collect some mats from the enemies then as they seem to attack me anyway. What’s that? Under three hours I managed to get a whole whopping four of a common crafting mat that I’ll need at least a hundred of to advance my crafting level? Well, okay. I guess I’ll just not craft.
So what can I do at this point? PvP is borked, PvE is a bore, dungeons are overtuned, crafting (and actually all loot gain) is based on an RNG that requires more grind than most Korean MMOs. Only thing left is roll an alt and start again just to arrive at the exact same conclusion after a month or two. I paid 60 euro for a game that lasted two months and which I could come back to at any point but won’t because there’s nothing to come back to. Well… at least it’s better than Kane and Lynch 2 : Dog Days. That one was embrassing.

You said you can’t mine nodes because you die by open world monsters? LOL LOL LOL you must suck hardcore, i have 1 of every class in the game and i have NO problem mining nodes in ANY ZONE EVEN ORR, ORR is pretty easy, i even can solo kill champions and me and 3 other people have completed the huge group events,
I have some problems with gw2 also like
- no guild support
-Lack of endgame
-lack of immersion in pvp, as in no story to wvw, community is divided in pvp because a.net is upsessed with becoming an e-sport
- no guild halls
- not enough skills for each class
- Lack of build variety
- Some ballence issues but their not too too bad
- Again lack of different builds and vairetion between the same classes is a biggy
- Lack of more wvw options
- lack of raids
- lack of harder open world pve content
- lack of good rewards for killing hard enemies
- lack of a good drop system, killing trash gives me same chance as exotic as killing a champion or boss or w.e
