Dear Anet . . .

As mentioned many times Reddit: Giant Slayer

Please at least make the champ giants in Orr (or elsewhere) count for giant slayer. This is a general achievement. This one is out of line in difficulty compared to ALL of the other monster slayer achieves.

It just doesn’t make sense . . .

AND now with mega server, we can’t farm the one mob that grants progress. . .

To be fair, there’s not just one giant in the whole game that counts, if that’s what you mean by “one mob”. There’s the one in Diessa Plateau, the final boss of CoE Story (unless that was “fixed”), and the one in Harathi Hinterlands. On top of those three single giants, there’s that event chain in Brisban Wildlands that scales up to spawn multiple giants.

Now, that being said, it’s ridiculous that there are still only a handful of them, especially when every other Slayer achievement does not have such a scarcity problem.

Giants were prolific in Elona in GW1, so if we end up going there for the next expansion then the issue could be solved there.

Except would those ‘giants’ be comparable enough to the GW2 ones to count? I don’t remember them being all that big. Maybe the size of a Norn.

While it might not be great lorewise, I have suggested before to make raid bosses count towards the giant slayer achievement. Its a tedious achievement to do, and raid boss kills are hard timegated anyway, so it wouldn’t trivialize giant slayer at all. But it adds a tiny bit more reason to keep raiding after you get leg armor if you don’t have that achievement yet. And it could potentially entice a few more players to try raids, in order to progress that achievement.

only if anet can be skritted to actually do it. I think we’ve yet to see a single slayer achievement for all the creatures added post core-game

That defeats the purpose of the achievement though which is to kill giants. It’s really no different than letting raid boss kills count towards the skritt slayer achievement with the only difference being that skritt are more numerous.

ANet has several options

  • Leave things alone and let only the most dedicated completionists finish this chieve.
  • Spend effort to add a lot more (non-undead) giants into the game.
  • Reclassify undead giants (which would also make them not undead for the purposes of slaying potions and weapons).
  • Retire the achievement so it’s no longer staring folks in the face.

Which do you think is best for the community as a whole?

Any day now. I got lucky and stumbled on to the end of the upscaled event in Brisban the other day. After years of sitting at 2 giant kills, I am now at 5. Pretty sure I am on track for a world first on this one!

I got Giant Slayer mainly working the Brisban U.N.I.T. event in the Toxal Bog. (took me 4 years off and on before I did, lol) Usually there are several people working on that achieve there but if you put out in map chat or LFG you will get folk who are working on it.

I had one character I left there and went in every day to check. If there was a group working the event I stayed for as long as I could. Good AOE skills are a must to make sure you tag as many giants in the spawn as you can. Also letting U.N.I.T. fail helps respawn the event quicker though it is only a few minutes longer if it succeeds. The only bad thing is the folk who go too far ahead and kill everything and bug the event. If that happens submit a bug report with the IP (use /ip to find it) and I found it got fixed within a reasonable time.

The only thing I wish is a title “Giant Slayer” for the effort you have to put into getting this. It does take some dedication to get. It is the only creature slayer that takes a lot of time and effort to get.

Technically yes, but it would require 80 weeks of clearing every single raid boss to complete that achievement. Its not like it would make it trivial to complete.

I do understand where you are coming from, but I just see this as a ridiculously easy way to increase the number of “giants” in the game without making the achievement trivial to complete (which, in my opinion, would happen if risen giants counted towards it). You’d still have to work hard at it.

Naegling, Diessa Plateau → giant spawns every 20 min
Hidden Ourobon, Harathi Hinterlands → Kol Skullsmasher
Toxal Bog, Brisban Wilds → U.N.I.T event → can scale to spawn 4
Drytop → legendary giant (people even run this any more?)

I spent 2 straight weekends running with a group working on giant slayer. We had left characters at Diessa & Hinterlands giants. The group split between the two & called in party when the giant spawned. Everyone not at the called spawn swapped to the alt parked there & then the party engaged. Ran the legendary giant maybe 4 times & the U.N.I.T. event 3 or 4 and it only had enough to scale it all the way up once.

Giant slayer is fine the way it is. No need to change anything and no; raid bosses aren’t giants and shouldn’t count towards giant slayer. Welcome to a nice little grind to boost the points on the gaming nerd score card.

Does this really require a fix, it’s just an achievement that is a bit too dull. But in no way is it required to enjoy the game. I am fine without ever completing this one.

Nerd score card was too good to pass up, especially since I swore I’d never achieve point grind (ironic because I do have giant slayer and that is a grind).

Once I learned the tells for their attacks, the ones in Diessa and Hinterlands got to where I could solo them. For me it was easiest on an axe/sword berserker running mostly signets. Zerker weaps and Marauder armor to give a little extra cushion for missing a dodge or block. I think the trinkets were soldier’s for amulet & back piece; zerker for the rest. If you want; I can post the set up I found worked best for me.
