Aggro?
I’ve never questioned how aggro worked in this game before but something’s bugging me now that I have both an 80 Warrior and 80 Engineer. My Warrior is full zerker axes and hardly ever aggros. My Engineer is in Knight’s so I know she isn’t doing as much damage but she aggro’s constantly, even pulling bosses sometimes when there are plenty of people meleeing them. Why is that? She’s running a Static Discharge/Rifle build btw.
It’s probably because every other player near you is in Berserkers so you get the unlucky straw, trust me I am pretty much always in a similar situation due to my build/gear. You have to be good enough to survive the damage and be ready to pull out and away fast.

For some kitten backwards reason, ANet thinks that only “tanks” pile on armor. And so they apparently made having a high defense a mob magnet.
But not everyone put on armor for that reason. Some do so because we do not have the connection and reflexes to save ourselves from slip second, out of camera view, dodge or die attacks.
But because more armor means we get more mob attention, putting on more armor is basically futile in this game…

honestly if you want to build tanky then you shouldn’t have a problem with taking more hits. You should try and get better and work on the reflexes other then just trying to damage with toughness gear on while not doing that much to help the team.

Depends really how you play (what you do) as well as the build you have and utility skills. Myself I always play a survival build on all my chars. My Engi main for example I expect to take damage and so I pile up HP regen as much as possible to help keep me alive longer. When soloing champs or running dungeons or other challenging content I have 3 constant HP regens at anytime (Superior Dolyak Runes, Mango Pies and a trait when using a kit). All those 3 constant HP regens with my toughness/Vit as well as all my healing skills (Elixir gun skill 5, Elixir Gun Fkey, main heal skill, Fkey heal skill since I am a human) keeps me alive long enough usually to be able to solo most champs and help kill/res team mates in almost any situation.
My tip, if you go toughness def try and get as many healing sources as you can to keep that HP up since toughness lowers the damage you take. Also since we sacrifice power for extra survivability Bloodlust sigils can help a tad to bring our power back up and since we have the toughness/survivability we can usually not get downed too often to lose those stacks.

Thanks, I never knew that increasing toughness can make you an aggro magnet. Might as well switch to zerkers then… <_<
naw… toughness does increase aggressive magnetism but you shouldn’t switch to a gear set you don’t want just because of that… also had this going with my engi in dungeons, fractals and the like and i just tweaked my gear a bit so as not to have too much toughness but still be able to stand (or in my case kite around) against enemies or keep my distance from them (thank you rocket boots)

Toughness, higher toughness = more aggro.

A picture of dice means nothing…..
I am ALWAYS the target in most champ fights and any dungeon I run unless someone manages to somehow have more toughness/vit than me. Even then it is back and forth between that person and myself for the aggro.
Oh I would also like to state that having high toughness does not make one a tank – especially vs groups if you are alone or in a small group. More enemies means MORE attacks against you and your Hhp WILL go down fast due to that. There are NO tanks in this game only survival builds.
So even if you have all the survivability in the world ALWAYS be wary against groups because if even in a group yourself you will more than likely be the target of ALL if not most of the enemies and that can be BAD.
