Q:
Alt Key Question
A:
There is not sadly. They bizarrely implemented it without a toggle in the options.
That’s really shortsighted if you ask me. I hope they fix this soon. It’s beyond annoying.
EDIT: Has this topic even been brought up yet? Is it that rare to use the Alt key for combat?
(edited by Hammerguard.9834)
No, they broke it today.
And yes, there are a couple threads, or at least were.
No, it’s not rare, and at least as many are upset about it as are happy about it
There is absolutely no evidence to support that it would.” -AnthonyOrdon

We can see our character names now? Cool! I know many have asked for this feature. =)
I’m worried this isn’t even going to get fixed because of how little attention it’s getting. Everyone would rather cry about their poor key farming, meanwhile I don’t even feel like playing the game because of how annoying it is to see my name popup every time I use a skill.
I’ve been wanting to be able to see my own character name/title display on-demand for a while, almost as long as the game has been out, so that’s nice that it’s there.
Interesting that you folks haven’t noticed alt’s other use since launch -- alt has always been the key for viewing player and NPC names. Most players probably don’t notice, though, and have them set to always show. This is how it was in GW1, as well. (just as ctrl is for objects)
Making it a map-able shortcut key certainly would be nice, of course, to give folks more flexibility. I am dumb and, while noting it’s mapped to the same key as Show Ally Name, I didn’t, as Just a flesh wound.3589 did, point out the latter is in the Control Options.

That or toggle-able. It’s not asking much. But neither was getting this feature in the first place and look how long that took. :/

they probably haven’t noticed because they might have it set to automatically be on all the time
(although, even with it on it still sometimes fails to show some things)
that said
why do we need to know who we are
pretty sure we know what character we’re playing on
if you prefer it being there, then that’s fine, but clearly we should be able to turn this off and have it stop flashing, we have enough flashing going on with all the skill effects in this game
this was pretty unnecessary
Out of curiosity, why are y’all hitting the alt key anyway. I know I never do.
If you need it for skills, why not remap the "show ally’ to some other key?
ANet may give it to you.

Yeah, I said that.

Oh, kitten , I didn’t scroll down and catch that. My fault! I could have pointed that out in my previous post.
Yes, just remap the “Show Ally Names” entry under Miscellaneous. There you go, your attacks will stop calling up your name.
Yes, thanks for that, but now doesn’t “Show Ally Names” still show items that wouldn’t appear otherwise or was that the Ctrl key (or both)?
(edited by Hammerguard.9834)
Whatever you map it to will be for ally names (players, NPCs), if they are not already set to be visible automatically.
There is a separate entry for objects and enemies (left ctrl by default), again with enemy names likely already always visible as the default for most players.

I don’t know if it warrants a separate thread, but unfortunately viewing your own name doesn’t show the star for map completion.
I personally dislike this feature at the moment, but if we were able to select our characters and see our own health bar on screen – it’d at least be reminiscent of Gw1…
I vote for a toggle feature to allow this to be turned on/off freely.

Alt allows you to see your allies in the middle of the action when so much is going on you can’t see for excessive particle effects. Instead of reducing clutter, they have added to it. It also looks utterly unsightly when it’s up due to the unnatural way it has added.
There are two options they should have gone when developing;
- Bind this to another key. There is no reason it needed to be part of Alt.
- Have it as a toggled option
Most MMO’s with floaty names keep it separate. For eg at least 2 MMO’s, F1 puts up a more natural looking floaty name and also shows it up the top of the screen. At no point would it be viewable in combat. A similar key (obv not F1) would have worked here.
I use Alt an enormous amount. This is an annoyance which never needed to occur. A minor one in the grand scheme of things, but an annoyance which could have been circumvented.
As for using Alt for combat, well yes that easily fixed with the options we have.
