Alts Purpose
Changing pace?
I have 2 “mains” and an “extra”. There are days that i feel like playing ele (aka, tribulation mode), some days I like to take it easy on dungeons such as Arah so I bring my guardian. Sometimes Im asked by the guild to be a veil/portal bot in WvW or guild missions.
Its all about styles and mood. I used to play a single character, for about more than a year, but once you create an alt you just cant stop, your horizons expand, perhaps it is something you have to experience yourself to understand.
Hope that helps you, /cheers

Exactly as Fortus says, different professions play very differently. Heck, even two of the same can be very different if you pick different weapons and traits. You might also want one playstyle for WvW and another for dungeons and another for running the world events. And I guess one for SPvP too though with that you can make and delete characters at whim to go in and test builds.
Add in RP and all the creative storytelling that needs more than one personality, and I’d turn the question around to “what’s the point of only having one character?”
Everybody probably has different reasons.
I just like making up new characters. I really only have two I actually play for fun. I just get an idea for one and I have to make them.
Well, there’s taking different paths on the personal story, playing different races (for story, abilities, and cultural gear,) and, of course, playing different classes. I love my Elementalist, but some days I want to play Mesmer, or Ranger, or whatever. Playing alts has done a lot to keep me interested with new experiences.
Some people are happy to focus just on their main, I’m sure, but alts do a lot to keep the game fresh for me.
Its just, I have 5 80’s but after the whole acct bound thing I find it hard to make others.
Besides the fun of playing on different chars for the different feel and skills there are a few bonuses you can get from having alts.
1 – You can complete the personal story on them all to get tokens for more of the pact skins.
2 – You can complete world map completes on them to be able to make multiple Legendaries.
3 – You can mine Ori/Ancient wood on them all daily. No you don’t have to go exploring all over the map for them either. I have parked 6 of my alts at the spot you will see in the picture below. I log in on one of them daily to see if there are any Ori/Ancient nearby, if so I then gather it all on the 6 alts I have parked there. 3x 6 = 18 of each resource minmium and some days you get lucky and have one of each in the area. Like today for example (in fact the last 4 days in a row).
I have Character Attention Deficit Disorder. I can’t remain focused on one style of play for very long, so I have to mix it up. Alts enable this foible’s fair.
Prevent boredom.
I enjoy having different characters in different gear just for the different visuals and audio. Sometimes I just get an idea of something I think would look cool or be an interesting theme and make an alt for it.
I rolled alts mainly to farm dungeon tokens but even after the nerf its still fun to mix things up now and again. Also, each profession has a strength that makes it suited to particular content (e.g. Eles in AC, Rangers for most open-world content) .
Cause this game is boring without alts. I like re-doing lower level maps than this good for nothing “Living Breathing World” crap. It sure is breathing boredom. Imagine GW2 without alts. Then you have the answer to your question.
Why not alts? Alts have never been about farming content (“redoing dungeons” in the OP), for me.

Because we can’t be angry about both?
I do it for 2 reasons:
1) So I can get to play different races and different Personal Story choices. Also going back over a zone I’m very likely to come across at least some events I missed the first time around.
2) Because the different professions play differently, and I like having that variety.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
1 character —> 1 game styles
8 characters --> 8 game styles
As simple as that. It is not about mining (1-2 hours mining orichalc and ancient wood? when will I play?) nor farming. It is about going deep in the gameplay

…uhm…fun? Trying out a different profession/ experiencing a different race-based storyline?
fun, what else could it be?
8 classes, 5 races, male and female, you got tons of combinations to play the game.
pure fun – now i have 15 chars (11 – 80’s) and i enjoyed every moment of this, but if you still need some reason then think about having for example single warrior on berserk, second on shouts etc – no respecc, changing gear – just relog and you ready to go
Well thank you guys for on what to do. I’ll try to finish the rest of the low levels I have haha.
