As the title says, i kinda like spvp and my win/loss ratio is about 50/50 i would say, im not worst but far from the best. And i wanted to try out this new league. I figured hey im not that bad so i give this a try. 10 matches and 10 losses later I gave up.

So what about PvE then? Well I just cant get good at Fractals and dungeons, so im not even gonna try Raids.
Ive never experienced a game where my casual gameplay have hurt my experience so much :P

So does my mediocrity ruin the game for me?

I should add that ive played this game in small periods since release :/

I would check out some guides, maybe some dps rotation videos on youtube. The game is very bad about teaching the player mechanics or optimized combos and dps.

Do what you think fun. Do not worry about if not good for other thing. This is game and point of game is fun. If you see you do thing not fun do not do it. When you worry about play a way that is not fun for you then maybe take break.

Best suggestion: find a guild that is willing to teach you how to become better. Also, you can use the LFG tool requesting specific help in understanding the different content (ie, “PvPer looking to learn how to become better”). Teamspeak and Mumble would help immeasurably if you were able to connect with players willing to help you.

The community is here…just try to find a guild that can help.

I’ve noticed that what you’ve talked about is what I would consider upper level play. (PvP, dungeons, fractals, raids). In upper level play, yah, mediocrity shows up more and is punished more. If that’s the only content you like to do and you’re not particularly skilled, you’ll need to pick one and concentrate on it. Learn it inside and out and become skilled in that section of gameplay.

Keep in mind that the first season of league is pretty new. So everybody is crank up in the first 2 divisions, with very few people yet in saphire and ruby. This that you have a greater chance to get against player with better skills for now. As those level up in league you gonna be able to face people more of your caliber.

It just seems like if you dont excel in this game you miss out on huge part of the game. I dont say that you should hand out content for free just like that. But i dont really find a middle ground. could be the game design and i just dont fit right in, wich is a shame cause its a good game.

First hint:
- try to read up on your class
- make sure you understand all your traits and build proper trait+stat combos. even the strongest greatsword (power build) necromancer (insert class of choice) does no damage with condition gear

Second hint:
- try a different class. sometimes it clicks more with a different class

Third hint:
- spvp, pve and wvw all require different approaches and understanding. don’t expect just because you mastered one to excell at the other straight away, though class understanding will help
- fractals and pve content in general is mostly memorisation (probably 70% memory, 30% reflexes). You won’t be good at fractals unless you know them by heart. Then it’s all a matter of “doing the correct thing at the correct time”. wvw and spvp are a bit different in that respect

Final hint:
- especially spvp is in a state of big confusion at the moment
- there is a huge influx of f2p players with little experience
- vast unbalance due to elite specialisations
- bad luck with team comps and quite a few 5-mann groups signing up at the moment to breez through the ranks in pvp atm

How good you are depends on how good your group is. If your group is bad then you can’t play as well as if it was good. I’m not saying you should get carried by good groups. What I mean is when all party members contribute buffs, heals, etc it lets you survive and do more dps. And of course you’re expected to contribute the things that your class is good at.
If you’re doing a fractal and your group sucks then you will be dying a lot or have to kite things forever. On the other hand if your group is good you will stack, share buffs and heals, and kill the mobs easily. So don’t assume that you’re necessarily bad. It could be bad groups that don’t cooperate enough.

Next thing I want to say is that after I learned raid boss fights, I noticed that I became a lot better at other PvE. You have to go out of your comfort zone to improve and starting to raid is possibly the best way to do that.

50/50 for PvP is par for the course. Just wait for the matchmaking fixes and you should see better matches.

PvE/Fractals – Just do it. It may look frightening but if you never try, you’ll never improve.

Raids – They will still be there 6/9/12/24 months from now and may have even had bug fixes and balance passes. Guides will be out as well, so as long as you and 9 other people can somewhat organize you’ll be able to do this in time.

I’ve verbosely stated my views of raids in another thread I created, but as far as everything else…

I’ve honestly never been in a fractal group under level 20 that either failed to finish the fractal or kicked a player out because they were struggling.

Just avoid fractal and dungeon groups that say speed run or exp only in the description. And every one of those groups, there is 5 more that don’t give a kitten.

The only time I will blatantly kick a player out is, because they are not listening, not communicating or clearly trolling.

Also something you can do on your spare time maybe, instead of guild wars – find skilled players on twitch or youtube and watch their videos. This has helped me out a lot. Most of PvP is knowing what to dodge, what to tank, how not to waste skills etc. Watching these people will help you get a better understanding of how they use their cooldowns effectively and what sorts of dps/cc combos they use.

For starters. Check out the channels to the right for different professions and whatnot – although you will find more of the same in WvW because its easier to roam on mobile classes.

Team Deathmatch for PvP – Raise the AoE cap for WvW – More unique events for PvE

How can you possibly get good at the game if you immediately give up at the first sign of adversity?

10 games is nothing. Revise your strategy and try to do better.
Fractals and raids take practice and strategy.

You’re never going to get good at anything if you don’t apply yourself.

spvp:
the system adjusts your competition based on your performance. as you win you go against higher skilled players and as you lose you go against lower skilled players.

tldr: 50% win rate is where you should be. it’s indicative of a good system.

raids and fractals:
practice, practice, practice.

Well win/loss is supposed to be around 50/50.

As for the league … hmm not really sure how many games the matchmaking system needs to figure out the correct place to put you. That aside how long are your queue times?

So what about PvE then? Well I just cant get good at Fractals and dungeons, so im not even gonna try Raids.

Half the battle of fractals and dungeons is knowing the the encounter. Fractals also requires paying attention to your agony resistance. If you don’t have enough(it tells you how much you need when you are inside fractals near where it shows your personal reward level) the agony is just going to kill you at certain spots.

The casual label for this game is what gave me that fan girl crave when I started. Since Hot, it’s been nothing but disappointment (except for the artistic side of the game). I am mad that everyone suggests to ‘get better’ to have more fun. “look up the best dps builds” “watch youtube videos of good players” “Learn your traits and builds”. Frankly, that’s not how some of us have fun. Some of us find enjoyment in the little things, like a leaf that looks awesome in the corner or a waterfall waterslide iceskating thing. We call our friends over and enjoy our time together. This game is pushing people away from each other when it sends them to look up the best dps builds to keep up with everyone; people get competitive and elitist. I miss guild wars for what it was, I truly do. Every MMO goes this route eventually.

It helps if you’ve got the right builds and gear. In my experience, 90% of the fight is decided before the fight even begins.

For PVE, you need to get a good build, and get good gear (I.E. Berserker, Assassin, Marauder, Sinister, Viper. Anything very high damage). Spec for as much damage as possible and as much boon support as possible. Make rigorous use of the dodge key. Once you’ve done that, you’ll be surprised how easy the game can get.

I don’t have opinions. I only have facts I can’t adequately prove.

How so?

Why would you bother with stuff others are saying when/if you take enjoyment in other things?

What is so suprising about people wanting to improve their gameplay?

There are active and alive guild wars role playing communities you might want to look into.

The way I read your post is as follows:
“I don’t want to put any effort into improving my knowledge, skill, gameplay, etc. of my character (which is absolutely fine if you don’t care for this stuff), but I want other players with different mindsets/goals to take me along (this is not fine. You need to play with likeminded individuals or else confilcts or disagreements will come up).”

That, or you’ve been drinking the negative coolaid of the forums to much.

As is, it is absolutely possible to never group and play 95% of the game solo and have a blast.

How can someone be ‘not good at fractrals’. Low level fractals is so easy, really. Just try a few times. And if you still struggle with it, yes, I would say, just let it be.

?? You talking only about Raid I suppose. Because that doesn’t matter in 100% of the other content. Dungeon and Fractal up to 50 are super easy, open world is maybe a tiny bit more difficult in the new 4 maps, but people said the same thing about silverwaste and nobody complaining about that anymore. Same will go with the new maps, as people will know them better. Hell you gonna have an easier time with hybrid PHIW tanky build if that’s what you like. In PvP, a LOT of build work very well in unranked as it put you in matches against equally skilled players. Yes from time to time you team don’t work well toghther, but a 50/50 win rate is what most players should have, or near it. For ranked, give it 1-2 weeks for better players to climb the division.

So really, there is only raid that put you in the situation that you describe and raid were suppose to be the most challenging thing in the game. The only part of the game hardcore.

This is absolutely true. I solo this game most of the time, only exception is when I play with my friends (all of whom are known to me in real life). I’ve never done dungeons, or fractals. I don’t do PvP either, though some of my friends do. I personally prefer to explore and discover new things, both about the world and my character. GW2 allows for more experimentation and rewards more exploration than any other MMO I’ve ever seen.

If you feel like you’re mediocre and it’s costing you enjoyment of the game I would recommend trying new things. Switch your weapons out for a different set and you get a whole new set of skill that you may like way better. Vary the skills you use, or try a different profession. You can level to 20 in a day or less of play, and at that point you know 80% – 90% of how that profession plays and whether you like it or not.

But…..why?

Why can’t you get good at fractals or dungeons? Specifically fractals, because they scale from stupid easy in the beginning, to pretty frustrating. But that’s over the course of 100 levels!

Most people that do fractals level 1-10 already know new people will join, so they are typically pretty easy going. I know I am.

I say give it a shot.

If FoTM1-10 is outside of your skill level, then I would answer yes to your original question. You are too mediocre for this game. Mediocre wouldn’t even be the term, because even mediocre players can get through fotm1-10, so I don’t know what we would call it.
