Title pretty much says it. This is not a thread for opinions on whether its a cool idea or not, Im looking for verification that I am allowed to auction off a name for little more than gold pieces (i.e. not selling intellectual property on ebay for example).

My plan as of now would be to auction the name, recieve payment in gold pieces, after which i delete the placeholder lvl 1 toon that holds my old name from Gw1, and within (an hour?) the person who bought the Name could roll a toon with it.

If this is in violation of ToS I will remove this post and never speak of it again… (seems all fair to me, but what do i know>?)

werent names from gw1 been released past week or so?

i remember reading whine threads about how the time for it was “too soon” and “not having enough time” to solve the names being released

There’s usually nothing wrong with selling something in-game for something in-game.

The only rule they have that somewhat matches is “9. You may not buy, sell, transfer or auction … game Content, including … game characters …” It’s loose enough that it could apply, however it’s intended to only cover selling with real money, since it also says you’re not allowed to buy/sell/auction in-game items.

You’ll possibly have a very hard time attempting to give the name to someone else though. A deleted character is released after 24 hours, which may or may not be exact. All someone has to do is setup a macro to snipe the name. After all, if you’re publicly auctioning it, a lot of people will know the name.

I thought the character delete screen says that you have 1 hour to re-roll a character after you delete it?

He said he has a placeholder character with the name in GW2 now…

I don’t see how it would be an issue. MANY games allow this sort of thing. First of all, you are trading for in game currency, so you are making no real money off of this. Second off all, you are trading something you own in game for something else in game. I would be completely floored if someone from Arenanet came on and said this was a violation of TOS. It would be the first game I’ve seen that in. WoW, Rift, Aion, even Everquest… people did this sort of thing constantly and it was well known. It would be new to me.

er.. how would this exactly work? People will have to know the name you’re auctioning off. And after the bidding ends, they’ll just rush madly to make a char with that name after 1 hr. On that note… sign me up for the auction. I’ll participate, I promise. ;D

I imagine if no one complains about you scamming them then it should be okay.

But, it may be difficult to make certain that the proper person gets the name since someone else could swoop in and grab it first. As such, you may want to take half the gold up front and the rest upon completion. That does introduce all the standard trust issues – do they trust you to do it upon payment? Do you trust them to pay you upon getting the name? Will they lie about getting the name?

What happens if someone bids for a name, they pay, you release it, and they get their friend to take it before they do. They come back to you and demand that you give them back their money. You give them the money and a week later their friend releases the name to them…

Or, you refuse to refund so they report you for scamming them out of the gold.

I, personally, wouldn’t try doing this but if it went smoothly and you weren’t reported for it then I suspect that it’d be alright.

Just so you know….

Defrauding a player is ban worthy and with a giant 24 hour window of the “Buyer” getting screwed you run a rather high risk of having your account banned.

While it may not be against the letter of the rules, I’d say you’re opening yourself up to a ban for scamming. Once you release the name, you really have no way to guarantee that a certain person gets it.

I certainly hope it’s against something in the TOS.

It’s hard enough to get character names without idiots taking advantage of the situation for personal gain.
