I bought this game a couple of months ago and I liked it a lot at first but the excitement seems to be fading so fast. Everybody seems to love this game so much but I just can’t see why. I was willing to get over the horrible PvP (I mean the downed system, really?) and continue with the game but honestly I don’t even see the point in leveling. I wanted to run Ascalonian Catacombs but it was either lvl 80 only or you had to pay like 3 gold to these peoeple which is just so weird. I don’t know if I’m just not casual enough for this game or is there something else but overall I just don’t seem to enjoy this game besides the fact that it’s visually stunning and the music is great.

The leveling aspect is meaningless, just try do burn through it till 80 asap, because all you are going to be doing at 80 is what you did leveling. Dungeons are rare to find sub 80 groups, and really anything outside of speed runs/meta/etc. Dungeons are one of the more toxic areas in the game, so either get a guild and run with them or make your own and hope it doesn’t get hijacked.

It’s mostly just the wardrobe and friends for me. Character customization is a big selling point for me and friends… well, friends are pretty much what make any multiplayer game fun.

Are you in a guild right now? If you are not being in a guild helps out a lot especially for new players, you can ask for help from guildies, do dungeons and fractals with them overtime you will get to know your guildies and to be perfectly honest I have played this game since it’s beta days and the 2 main reasons I still enjoy this game is because I love wvw but hate PvE and also most of the people in my guild also has the same mindset as me so even if we do the wvw rotation for the umpteenth time it never gets boring because we are constantly either helping each other out, discussing RL or just chatting about something or another, trust me it’s the interaction that will make you want to play gw2

From personal experience, adapting to the game does take a while. When I first started, I got bored very quickly by lv15. Had a fortnight break and only on my 2nd attempt that it sunk in. Unfortunately the excitement for GW2 is based around it’s self fulfilling mindset, set your own goals and do anything you want. Like most mmorpgs, having other friends or a guild to play with helps greatly to keep you entertained.

As for the dungeons, I wouldn’t bother buying into dungeon selling and generally stay away from them in any mmorpg. People usually seek lv80 because of gears/stats/traits makes running them easier/faster. In fact most of the fun boss mechanics exists in open world maps as GW2 dungeon are very lackluster (excluding fractals) compared to other rpgs.

There really isnt much to this game. They offer mass scale pvp in wvw which is hard to find in most mmo’s out there and there is an interesting lore to the game which is an aspect to mmo’s some people really look for. Other than that though there isnt much. The pvp isnt that great, you can find games that offer a better better pvp experience if thats what your looking for. The pve is alright with the world bosses (raids) and dungeons but like every mmo it becomes stale and boring without new ones added (which is to rare in this game) plus leveling up in this game is not fun at all imo, it seems more of a chore than anything (which is probably why some people say you dont even really get to play the game till 80)

This is ofc from my opinion of the game. I’m sure the white knights will disagree and flame on me for saying any of this

nope not all new players starting their own next Q.Q thread instead of getting information to themselves….

Its just this point that makes me tired and tired again.

These bad LFG people with their 80 only and some even sell paths but i am too lazy by myself to create an own lfg in 10 sec…. thats excactly the point

Yes I’m in a guild but I’m a noob so I’m honestly afraid of asking if I could go anywhere with them because I don’t want to ruin the thing for them. I think the part the fun-killer for me is the fact that I’m confused and not yet sure what I’m supposed to do in this game generally.

Just ask your guild then, i’m sure there are a lot that would be willing to help you with anything you need. It gives vet players something to do when they get to help newer ones out so it would be the opposite of ruining anything for them :P

It’s hard to answer your question because other than the 2 examples in your first post you’ve not really told us anything about why you dislike the game, and if we tried to talk about the whole game in general terms that’s a very broad question.

But I’m one of the people who has been playing since launch, not taken any breaks and still loves the game so I’ll try to give you some insight into why. Let me start by saying that even though I’ve been playing for almost 3 years (1,051 days to be exact) I’ve “only” played for 2,417 hours and some of that is afk.

I like that I can play this game at my own pace (in my case that’s slowly). I can take breaks as and when I want to without worrying about wasting money on a subscription or getting too far behind other players. On a related note I also like that the progression is relatively quick. It’s possible to get to level 80 and get a full set of exotics very quickly and there’s relatively little progression after that. Which means I can focus on what I want to do instead of what I have to do to get to the stuff I want.

As for what I like doing in my case it’s mostly PvE. I like exploring the maps (even ones I’ve gotten 100% on, I still find new things), doing the story, and just playing with my guilds and randoms I meet. I also like doing some of the achievements and collecting mini pets, which sometimes pushes me to do new things (I even entered a PvP tournament to get the mini llama).

But at the same time this has never been the only game I play, and far from my only hobby. I’ve never expected it to occupy me all the time and I think that helps a lot.

Everyone started confused at one point, you just have to gird yourself and ask someone to help you learn.

Or do what I did: get to level 80, pretend you know what you’re doing, and fake it until you get it. Then one day you’ll wake up and find you have to drink yourself into a stupor to find the game challenging again.

I love game for its hearts system . I hate pvp but i think the wvw here is not so bad.
(for pvp)
Also, find good guild, they will not mind beginners and makes run using team speak to teach how to do it. I was in AC at lvl 24 just for fun. Not that i could kill anything but did get tons of XP and at that time the 1 gold was a fortune

You do whatever you want to do in this game, so if you are confused about what to do i suggest you set a goal for yourself.

For me, it’s:
1) Pick a class.
2) Reach level 80 with that class.
3) Do map completition (i really enjoy this one).
4) Complete every available step of the personal story.
5) Try to complete jumping puzzles (i SUCK in this ç_ç).
6) Try to unlock new skins to make my character look cooler.
7) Pick a new class and start again.
8) Switch between my new and old classes in order to avoid the boredom of playing the same character over and over and over again.

For you is…. whatever you find enjoyable to do.

Well like the other ppls says. This game starts for you once you hit level 80 , because you got all traits can create your own build more or less and can get your own armor and enjoy some huge events on every map like Vinewrath or some worldbosses or Toxic event or other stuff. In my opinion the fun starts with level 80.

I play this game now almost a year now and yeah at first it was being boring , because when i started i needed to get used to this kb and seeing how my character lay on the ground and need ages to stand up , while he getting hitted by some monster , because … KNOCKBACK … sometimes im asked myself , if my character prefer to cry on the ground instead of standing up and this killed the fun for me quickly was like :“Dam stupid game.I’m out.” So i took 3 weeks a break and then i retried it and yeah Gw2 is a game where you need to get used to it and think about to use your dodges and other stuff and many ppls only recognize you once you are level 80 or close to it , because it was in my guild.I was running around got asked , if i got other characters level 80.I said nope and yeah got ignored, because im not level 80 … anyways.

Find a guild , which fits your mindset. There are tons of guilds for everyone and get level 80 asap like ppls said , because this leveling system is boring … i was tired of exploring map , because for each character it feels so same. You can try eotm , but check your colour , if you are green (high chance to get some nice leveling there),if not well … go pvp , if you like it.I don’t like it , because condi patch kills everything. Also Warrior are still op ,because rampage and so on and im not that skilled atm to deal with a 45k hp monster with reduced dmg by 25 % and tons of spamable CC and dont forget swiftness and stabi on it.

So yeah at first gw 2 became boring , but later it getting interesting and then it starts to make fun. Also its sometimes funny to hang around with friends and exploring maps together like in other mmo’s.Without friends you wont have that much fun.

I know right , that epic feeling , when 2 zergs meeting eachother … it feels like a real battlefield or how some ppls play tactic and kill a enemy zerg made by 60 man or so and they getting killed by a 10 man zerg its amazing sometimes and don’t forget you meet more friends there aswell.

The PvE aspects of the game are mostly tacked as, as they were banking on PvP and WvW as being the primary drivers of the game. But surprisingly, most players focused on PvE content, which unfortunately didn’t get a lot of good baseline development.

The combat system is excellent; Easily one of the best MMOs setups next to Tera; But the PvE content doesn’t capitalize on it. The mob AI is over simplistic (which you can thank beta testers for), the mob scaling is almost purely via Power/HP (which negates the benefit of half the attributes available to builds), Critical hits (Pow/Prec/Fer) are the only multi stat synergistic combination, which ultimately devolves the meta into an almost pure DPS race.

Our active defenses are very powerful, which removes the need for a dedicated tank. Generally this is good, as classes easily synergize through shared buffs and field combos… but the dungeon designs are based on archaic trinity designs, and usually kill gated to control progress.

PvP, due to its small size, over-distills the burst and bunker meta, as there isn’t enough room for variation when you have so few to fill certain extreme, but critical roles to those objective based modes.

Despite some zerg scaling issues, WvW is where the game effectively uses everything the system has to offer. Every stat, except healing, has a significant use… and the only reason healing is bad is due to universally poor coefficient scaling across all classes. With the active defenses being as effective as they are, and triggered healing stackable to a decent degree, the relative benefit of Healing power is extremely weak, and those points better put toward other stats. Eles are a minor exception, as they have “better” scaling on healing in their support builds. Per skill they are still bad, but the uptime and field support offered by the full skill rotation gives it a reasonable net gain.

As for Casual, vs Hardcore…. the game’s overall design inherently punishes hardcore and farming, ironically, due to requests by the hardcore players to offer them a shallow illusion of progress. If you are reward oriented (which most of us fall into that trap from time to time), the game and its high RNG dependance for end game content is designed to stretch you out far as possible, thinking thats what you want. If you expect a reward schedule, like WoW, the game becomes almost insulting on some levels. But ultimately its that way, because thats what hardcore players asked for.

If you are more relaxed, and less focused, the game has a ton of activities to offer. The majority of these, especially crafting, relies on a degree of passive material collection. If you are more proactive, you can play the market to gain gold, or farm dungeons for tokens…. But for most we simply do gathering, salvage, and daily events as we go about the game. As these collect over time, it puts us in a position to pursue a crafting project.

Then there are the numerous seasonal events through out the year. Theres also Living story world events that advance the lore, and are usually released on bi-weekly schedules. We’re in a lul for these right now, as the expansion signifies the start of the new Living story season.

If you’re more industrious, you can do Legendary crafting. But this can be an exercise of frustration, or a casual past time based on your expectation of progress.

Overall… if you try to take this game too seriously, it’ll abuse you the way most MMOs have gotten people accustomed to. But if you play with even a slightly casual approach, the game makes no big expectations, and are essentially free to explore the mechanics at leisure. I played this game hard for the first year and half, getting insanely frustrated with the canter of the LS release schedule. Took a year off, and recently came back. After making my first Legendary (something I had never bothered to pursue initially) it put a huge amount of the game into perspective. I made a Sunrise simply for the sake of the achievement, and to say that I did it. Had I tried to do it a year ago, when I was trying to gear and optimize 5 classes, I wouldn’t have been able to afford it.

But now I have only 1 ascended set (mostly drops, and converted), one legendary, and a decent wardrobe of sub-20g unique skins. I periodically change my main class to play around with the new mechanics, maybe optimize a build, but spend most of my time doing group events and WvW. The drive for a usable build is initially high… but once I get a go-to build for serious play, I usually spend a lot of time fiddling with alternative builds just to play with the mechanics. It still irritates me to this day that Ele Conjures have self-synergy problems, but I love goofing around with Earth shield and Lightning hammer as primary weapons. I setup 2 builds for my Engie in WvW, my mesmer is almost completely WvW focused, I roam PvE with guard almost daily, and at some point I’ll retry my Ranger (poor thing suffered from poor class design since launch).

Granted there is some dissonance in the design over encouraging multiple characters, yet making it artificially difficult to roll a new one efficiently for lvl 80 play….. and the legacy of basic crafting being abnormally resource intensive…. But otherwise its something I strongly recommend when you feel like you a hit wall with your current character.

Are you in a guild? Sounds like a lot of your issues are not having people you know to play with and enjoy the game with them. The most fun i’ve had in this game was running around with my wife or guildies and with a group of some awesomely funny people in WvW.

Also, I think you might be approaching this game somewhat “wrong”. The joy of this game (for many) comes from exploration and trying everything as it comes along.

At the end of the day though if you are really that dissatisfied with the game then maybe you might need to seek something else out. :/

Don’t be afraid to ask your guild. And if they are unwilling to play with you or help you, look for a new one. Do this until you find the right group of people! I and many others always allow the lowest recommended level into my dungeon runs. You probably don’t see them in the lfg because they fill up so quickly.

You can always go to your achievement panel and look at what you can do there. Lots of achievements in the Bosses, Explorer, and Collection tab can be started or even finished sub-80. Keep a world boss timer up, and get to the ones that are in your level range. Lower level characters are accepted in Edge of the Mists, which is a type of WvW but not “the” WvW, and there are always people to group with there.

The great thing about this game is that you make your own journey. You don’t need to grind anything if you don’t want to because everything you need can be bought (note ‘need’ not ‘want’). End game is cosmetic. The true game is finding what areas you like to play and having fun. There are plenty of achievements and skins to grind out if that’s what you enjoy.
