Am I missing something?
Best bet is to buy it on amazon or something similar, as Arena Net now only offers expansion/base game combo.

1. Anet stopped offering the base game, you can see if you can still find it from some of the official retailers: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/retailers/
Do note that if he likes it and want the expansion, the expansion will still cost 50$.
2. The Expansion is 50$. It includes a free base game for those who do not have it yet. There is no Expansion without base game.
So yes, 50$ no matter what for the expansion.
Unless he can find a copy in a gaming shop then the base game isn’t available anymore digitally, apparently.
Would you like some hard cheeze with your sad whine?
Thanks for the replies, appreciate you guys clearing it up.
Hopefully the offer the expansion without the original game. Sounds great for new customers, but it’s a slap in the face for someone who spent money already on the original game.
I feel kind of indifferent right now lol… maybe I shouldn’t invite him to play
The expansion is $50, if you’re a new player (your roommate) you get the Core game as a gift. I think this is the only way to buy the game at the moment from Anet.
I would warn your roommate if he gets a copy of GW2 Core from another source he will then still need to buy HoT for $50 later (assuming he likes the game and wants the exp).
$50 for HoT is the only way to get the game at the moment from Anet.

I disagree. If you buy it from A net then they can refund you – naturally at the cost of closing the account.
However, buying the game from third party members means that you can’t get a refund without a lot of hoops to drop through.
So if you try and don’t like the game, it would be best to buy from a net for that refund.
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

I can’t understand this attitude and I’ve heard it a dozen times or more. The original game is being offered for free, to encourage new people to get the game. It’s not a slap in the face to new players. This isn’t the only MMO to do this. It’s nothing new.
Basically, they were selling the old game on sale for $10 anyway. They made the decision to include it in the new package for free.
So if they’re charging $50 for the expansion anyway, and that was always their plan, why is this a slap in the face?

Heart of Thorns + vanilla is the new base game. According to ANet, the vanilla game is a ‘free bonus’, so they won’t be broken apart.
This is interesting actually.
In all the debates over the price. people on both sides of the fence take for granted that the $50 package is a very good deal for new players. And it is, but it may not actually be the most enticing thing for getting new customers.
Now that I think of it, I’m sure many new customers would have actually much rather gotten the $10-$20 sale price on the base game, and then possibly pay the $30-$40 on the expansion later after trying out the base game. You’d assume those players would have already picked it up already in that case, but that’s not necessarily true.
Anet is probably banking on pushing them into committing to the full $50 package price, (and also banking that many vets will go for the $75 or $100 for the gems and fluff) but they might actually be turning off potential new customers as well.
Trying to speak in neutral terms at the moment, but that might be an interesting consideration in the price drama debate.
Stop being a wuss and get the game for 50. I got the heroic pack for 20 about a week ago and I’m fine with waiting for the expansion pack to decrease. I’m def gonna buy the expansion.
