Am I playing Guild Wars 2 wrong?
did you do your personal quest ?
participate in the current living story episode ?
did you try out World vs World ?
did you try out Structured Player vs Player ?

Yeah I did do the personal story and a little bit of WvW at level 80 but not that much.
That’s pretty much the PvE. Then you get dynamic events around those hearts which is kill more stuff, fetch more stuff. Then you get the world bosses in certain zones run to a timer which is interesting the first few times.
Then at 30 you get dungeons. Good luck there. People expect you to be max level to do a downscaled level 30 dungeon for some reason.
Your personal story is good exp too but they have huge gaps in levels between them. You won’t be able to do just the story from 1 to 80. You’ll find the monsters stronger than you are until you do more hearts.
Crafting levels you too if you decide to go that option.
It really is just another MMO.
The hearts aren’t the heart of the game. ^^ They were actually added late in development to add structure to the areas. People didn’t know what to do and where to go. The true heart of the PvE areas are the events. Those will occur around you as you go through an area. They may be marked by an orange circle on the map or an orange starburst icon over an NPCs head. If an NPC runs up to you and speaks to you, they probably have an event they want you to do. Named NPCs often are tied to events. http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Events
There is WvW. You can reach it by clicking on the castle icon on your UI or the Asuran gates in Lion’s Arch or by the letter B on the keyboard. http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/World_versus_World
Then there is PvP. Reached by the crossed swords on the UI. http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Pvp
Then of course dungeons http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Dungeon
Guild wars 2 provides a lot of options for you while levelling.
You can either
- explore maps, finishing hearts, getting Vistas, e.t.c.
- go around doing events
- play with a group/zerg in WvW
- play sPvP (to get tomes of knowedge)
- do your personal story
And the best thing is that, while levelling, you don’t have to commit to a single part of the levelling experience!
You can start exploring and, if you get bored, play a few PvP matches. You can even do them at the same time, since you can join a PvP arena while exploring in PvE! That way, you won’t have to sit in a lobby while waiting for your match to start.
Don’t forget that you can also do dungeons to level. Each explorable mode path grants you almost an entire level. If you’re new with dungeons, however, I recommend finding a few friends to help you learn the dungeons at your own pace, since LFG groups can be quite demanding.
What Guild Wars 2 isn’t is linear. You don’t have to do hearts. Ever, if you don’t want world complete. You can skip hearts, because you don’t need them to level.
See the thing is, in most games, you have quest hubs with enough XP in quests to get you to the next quest hub. Guild Wars 2, not so much. You can roam through zones just doing the events you want (and don’t be so fast to run off after an event, many of them chain).
Sometimes events will fill hearts anyway and you’ll get credit. I do a lot of hearts in passing. I just do one or two things. Because in this game, I can come back. There’s nothing to stop me from doing stuff later because the game downlevels you. So if I go back to gather mats in an early zone, each time I’m there, I do a few more bits to the heart. Eventually it gets done.
Dynamic events are at the core of this game. That and the Living World. But there are also dungeons and big meta events to do.

i had the same problem.i made a guardian lvl up to max lvl with hearts exploration and doing the random events. Then i was max lvl and didnt group up for anything and also havent done a single dungeon/instance whatever is called as i was leveling(since everyone wants max lvl players).Thats not fun at all for me.I dont like pvp so i returned to some other mmo i play.I dont think that this game is for me.For a b2p game is good but nothing more.

Same exact thing even same class lol.
The original plan was to be different from traditional MMOs, but it’s more and more like them as each day passes.
You might consider leveling to 80 in EoTM’s karma train before “starting” to play your character for real because the new trait system makes leveling really tedious (e.g. no traits until level 30).
You’re downscaled in lower level zones so you can still come back to the lower levels as a level 80.
If you like creating/discovering builds for yourself definitely do this because you’re going to be stuck with the same traits for level after level if you do it the intended way.

It’s Edge of the Mists in WvW. People run around in large groups capturing keeps, killing the bosses and farming lots of karma and items. Some people find it less boring that leveling. What it won’t do is teach you your profession at all. You’ll be level 80 depending on a zerg to keep you alive.
It’s not bad to do for a level or 2, but I wouldn’t recommend leveling like that all the time. Use it to break up PvE when you’re bored.

Yes, if you’re a PvE person, then the events are the backbone of PvE. The hearts are good when leveling to get level appropriate armor and weapon as well as other items such as recipes and food. But the events are the main quests and where you get the story behind each area.
For example, go to these sites and scroll down to the events.
Queensdale, human starter zone. http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Queensdale
Harathi Hinterlands: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Harathi_Hinterlands
Cursed Shore, level 80 area: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Cursed_Shore
Each map has it’s own set of events.
The good part is, if you missed them while leveling you can still go back and do them and get full credit because of downleveling.
Since you have a level 80, there is also the big Meta events. http://howar31.github.io/GW2Timer/
This site has the waypoints on it. You can type them in chat and then use that to locate the events on the map.

I think your issue was focusing on the Hearts. They’re not mandatory (nor is much in the game), they just help as a sorta guideline for equipment and Experience.
wait! can you participate in the current living story episode even if you are a lowly level 50? (I am only 15 days into the game)

Actually you can’t. You have to be level 80.

The last living story you where upscaled to 80 for the events/areas while the story was active. Since they have made everything permanent this time around you are no longer upscaled.
Since you already have a level 80 (which most ignored) and are wondering what to do you are indeed kinda playing GW2 wrong.
There is no endgame. At this level, you join the grindgame. You grind champions, you grind LS for 2 weeks after the hour of storytime, you grind out various dungeons. It all depends upon what carrot you want. You pretty much grind out for carrots, or grind out for gold to buy gems to buy carrots. You can grind for craft mats if you feel like grinding for a long time for a minor stat boost. You can grind to find precursors or gold to buy one.. then grind for the legendary mats. You can join a Guild and grind out commendations doing the same thing, over and over. You can do WvW on unchanging maps over and over.. but live opponents does add some spice. You can grind for Achievements as well.
Same thing, over and over, pretty much describes post 80 GW.
You can still wander the world, hit a few DEs you haven’t and find a few new things, but at level 80 you are really meant to do the same old things, a lot. Very few singular events are going to reward you much of anything. If an event or npc does offer a chance at decent reward, you will be expected to join the Zerg, or the zerg will run over you as you try to do it. Either way, any challenge is gone. Some zerg targets require a fail condition, so, if you try to complete some events you will be abused for not playing gw2 right.
You could run some dungeons for the fun of first time through, but no one will want you unless you are doing it right. Right gear, right armor, right spec, right runes, and still a groupkick if you slow them down 40 seconds. Because “they” are doing it over and over.
LS gives new stuff every 2 weaks. One days worth. Then you still end up doing the same thing, over and over, for any meaningful reward.
Shrug. Many seem to love this. Understandable.. it’s no different than any other mmo, just not grinding for stat gear drops. You grind for “other stuff”.
I tend to just wander around to mine and kill Bears, since I can’t murder Charr. Or I go to wvw, where I can. They are simply precious when on fire and rolling around making noises. I do actually love saving the Quaggan in Frostgorge, mainly for the comments I get for being a vile, griefing Quaggan saver.
I don’t play GW2 right, at all. I don’t even have a backpeice of the month on. You can play gw2 the wrong way, but you won’t be a kewl kid.

To be honest, I don’t find GW2 leveling system that revolutionary. Sure, there are some cool events, but the fact that most of them are very repetitive doesn’t help.
Maybe that’s just me, but after finishing most of DEs once, choking every possible piece of lore and mechanics out of them, I’m not interested in repeating them, tbh.
Also, when I see a zerg following “commanders” and then empty zone because everyone is following the blob, makes me sick.

Frankly, if exploring the open world does not enthuse you to continue playing (from a PvE perspective), then it’s not that you are playing wrong, but that maybe you have chosen to play the wrong game for your particular gaming tastes.

I pretty much totally skipped out on hearts. Hearts are for people who want quests. I suggest you try dungeons if you like group instances, try out commanding in WvW if you have the money on hand, try out SPvP, and give the other classes a try.

Doing world exploration is the fastest way to consistently level outside of karma trains and crafting.

Fexal – what do you like about MMOs?
“Whose Charr is this?”- “Ted’s.”
“Who’s Ted?”- “Ted’s dead, baby. Ted’s dead.”

Totally skipped the Dungeons. Dungeons are for those that need some sort of validation as a “L33t” player or that have reached the point where earning gold is WHY they are playing a game….
(The above is a gross simplification and stereotyping done on purpose to show narrow-minded contrast to the quoted statement….felt I needed to add this disclaimer as this is NOT my personal feeling (ok…maybe a little) and I can sense the mentality of some posting here).

Dungeons can be fun but I don’t believe this game is centered around them.
If you’re going to come into GW2 with the old MMO mindset, then you’re going to play with the old MMO mindset.
GW2 has the opportunty to branch out of that and try things differently. Take advantage of it.

There is certainly a faction of players that seem to think they are the ONLY game content “worth” playing. Kind of sad.

Well, I didn’t say anyone’s opinion is sad personally, but I do think it’s pretty obvious that the game is not centered around dungeons, since all you hear from dungeon people is that Anet doesn’t pay enough attention to them. Doesn’t come out with enough of them. Doesn’t fix existing bugs within them. Even before launch, they talked a bit about dungeons, but everything was about a “Living Breathing World”. That was their mantra. Not instances, but open world.
Other games are centered around dungeons, so people come here and expect the same thing. But I think the evidence that Anet thinks of it as central to the game is lacking.
OP, maybe you should try another character class. Nothing wrong with guard (it’s actually my favorite), but different classes play differently and can be more/less fun depending on how you like to fight. Other than that, I think the best suggestion I’ve seen in these posts is to take advantage of the non-linear design of the game and explore all your options and available content. If you try it all and are still bored, then maybe you just don’t like the game.
That’s ok too.

I’ll take five person group content over massive scale zergs or exploring (possibly in part due to my low settings.), but that’s just my opinion. What’s the problem with that? You don’t see me going around insulting your favorite thing to do in the game :/

Didn’t say their opinion was sad and YOU put the “quotes” around sad…not me. I did not say that as a put down, but a genuine feeling of regret and loss. The fact that some players completely discount every other aspect of the game to the point of actually BELIEVING their favored content (that is a VERY small percentage of the actual content) IS the only important part of the game is quite sad. Also, I do find it sad that I avoid Dungeons like a plague, not because of the content, but because of the general atmosphere and the attitude of the majority of the regulars present there.
…….. What’s the problem with that? You don’t see me going around insulting your favorite thing to do in the game :/
Really? How freakin’ ironic that you don’t realize what you posted was insulting to anyone that clears maps. kind of making my point about the attitude and atmosphere other players get from some Elitist Dungeon regulars.
BTW, the Dungeon content is fine and any insulting insinuation was not directed at the content.

The bottom line is that though everyone plays the game differently (and is entitled to play any way they want within the rules of the game), Anet themselves have a vision for the game that not everyone likes or shares.
What excites Anet, what they enjoy, is the idea of a living, breathing world. They keep saying it. It’s their focus. It’s what they’ve always said.
Specifics like dynamic events which they were going to add more of were just a means to an end. The end was to create a living breathing world.
Anet switched from a DE focus to a Living World focus, because that’s always been the focus. To them, this is a better way to reach their original goal.
It’s not that they don’t care about dungeons or PvP or WvW. There are teams who work on that stuff. But the game they wanted to make is one where you have a living world that changes, evolves, moves forward and tells a story.
They’re getting much better at it.
To the OP: yes you’re playing it wrong. Get out of the questing mindset. Set yourself a goal (mine is to reach Lv 80 on all classes and craft an ascended set of armour for my elementalist). Find interesting ways of working towards that goal (mine is through PvP and WvW). Once you reach your goal, you’ll probably find your next goal (mine would be to get a legendary weapon).

I did not insult people. I said hearts are for people who want quests. “Dungeons are for those that need some sort of validation as a ‘L33t’ player”. Huge difference there. Saying this is for someone who wants quests, and saying this is for someone who needs validation as a player are two different things. The devs have even said that the hearts are there to support the events. Whether you find that fact insulting is up to you, but no offense is meant in it.
…“Hearts are for people who need boring quests to help them find a goal.” That’s what you said, pretty different as what you claimed to have written. Granted that Grimm was blunt, but the message remains the same.

@Morsus, I’m not attacking you. I’m just saying that you re-read what you write, because as someone else already posted, it may not have been your intention, but it came that way. In my personal opinion, people can do whatever they please and I don’t feel the need to tell them to do otherwise.

That one line Aline quoted suggests that you think people who do hearts are probably clueless or a little on the stupid side. Nobody likes to hear that (even if it might be true in some cases…). It’s just a matter of wording.
Would you like some hard cheeze with your sad whine?
My message: Hearts are pretty much just quests.

Okay, I’ll change that a bit for clarity. The developers have stated that those are meant to play a supporting role to events, and that’s all I meant by it. Thanks for being reasonable in pointing this out to me.
My message: Hearts are pretty much just quests. Personally I find them boring.
Grimm’s message: Dungeons for elitists who need to prove their skill to themselves.
The message is totally different there. You exaggerated both “messages” to fit your back-peddling claims. Good job.
My overall goal here was to show you what it felt like to have content you enjoy get be-littled in a flippant, backhanded way and I appear to have succeeded.
Peace out.
“Dungeons are for those that need some sort of validation as a ‘L33t’ player”
vs
“Dungeons for elitists who need to prove their skill to themselves.”
No exaggeration. My message is just what the developers have said. Not my fault the devs feel the same way I do.
