Yeah, this has bothered me for a long time. It is something small, but frankly makes the whole organization look a little less intelligent when they can’t get a simple word right that is a major part of their game.

It’s better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.

As Dutch origin, Staves sounds way more boring then Staff/staffs. On top of it, very very few people use ‘staff’ for leadership (the much more used term to my awareness). So for me, nope hasn’t bothered me.

Diablo III isn’t an English game and they use ‘staves’ for the plural of ‘staff’. This is the only game I’ve seen to use ‘staffs’ and I agree with Invictus.

Actually, he isn’t, at least not in relation to the GW2 TP. Well, unless the TP is selling support personnel — in which case the five race’s militaries are hiring. The context in which staffs would be correct would be something like, “The six generals and their staffs arrived for the conference.”

Does it bother me? Maybe a little, in the way that something just feels wrong.

If it takes them a month to change the spelling in the table, then GW2 programming is so badly arranged that WVW will never be fixed anyway. Unless you’re thinking these changes work something like this.

For game-related useage, I prefer “staves,” and I say “staves”… but when someone looks confused, I then say “You know, staffs?” (Like Danikat above.) But when I think of writing music, and staff paper, I think “staffs” and not “staves.” And considering the employees of a company, I’d go with “multiple corporate staffs” instead of the alternative.

I guess, to me, “staves” relates to the physical staff, as in a weapon, walking stick, or shepherd’s tool.

Interestingly, Dictionary.com has about an even split: 6 for staffs; 5 for staves.

Both arent considered correct vayne as far as the BLTC listing. Simple reading would point that out. Both being correct in their own respective contexts does not mean they’re interchangeable.

The FIRST definition applies to “staff” as far as it means the human resource. THAT context means the plural form is only correct when you’re talking about people.
IE:
-Staff is a single group of people
-By extensive, “staffs” is a group of groups

The second definition is the one the game should be using, one that refers to an item. As a result, the correct plural word is staves, not staffs.

The usage in game — ‘more than one staff (the predominantly wooden tool/weapon)’ — is undoubtedly supposed to be staves. There is no wrangling or misinterpretation that will get around that . It’s largely the same phonetic transformation as calf and calves.

For those who find the word odd, consider also that the long thin pieces of wood that make up the walls of a barrel are also “staves” and a crushed barrel or ship hull is “stove in”, referring to the broken staves.

I think what you really mean is “Will everyone please put on his or her own jacket?”

Regarding the OP, it should be “Staves” for full formality with no objection regarding grammar/spelling. I can’t really say it’s bothered me, but it is one of the first things I noticed using the TP filters when they were released some time ago.
