Just extremely lucky today? I don’t know; I completed Champion first today, I think (thank you, Champion Wolf Master), and ambient was the last or second-to-last.
I have not noticed this happening to me before. I completed ambient killer for today and have no champion credit. Maybe there is one, or there are a few, ambient “champions” out there for some sort of joke. Maybe there was a glitch. Either way, it is not normal for ambient killer to count towards champion slayer.
It’s possible you got a hit on a champion in passing and someone else finished killing him at the same time you finished the rabbit.
Believe me it’s easy to attack some champions while running past without knowing it. It’s even worse if you have pets sometimes, like minions if you’re a necro. They can attack stuff and you’’ll not even know it.
Sometimes I’m just running around on my ranger and I get the experience gain message because something attacked my pet and my pet killed it.
No, you’re mistaken. Sometimes it lags and shows you completion mark right after you complete something else, like heart, or vista, ETC. So when you killed champion, or rabbit both achievements were shown at the same time.
Champion Rabbits

Ambients are the little white-label critters that wander around the landscape – rabbits, sparkflies, crabs, raccoons, some kinds of fish, etc. They aren’t hostile and die instantly when you hit them, or accidentally catch them in AoE damage.
I got an achievement for killing a bunch of them by accident because I use a lot of attacks that either cover a large area or bounce between enemies. Like elementalist staff effects, thief shortbow autoattack, guardian hammerjump, etc.

I’m in Southsun a lot, and quite often I would kill the kittens out of the ambient crabs there by accident. I’d be running towards my next karka pinata, buffing myself so that my next attack is going to hit fast and hard. As soon as I’m in range, I attack, aaaaaaaand I six-figure the ambient crab that I didn’t notice was blowing water bubbles in front of the karka. -_-
I type pretty good for only having seven fingers left. I’ve also learned how to open cans of Fancy Feast very very quickly.

Yes, my kitty will not allow me to remove it, and I don’t want to risk losing fingers :\

I’ve never run into this issue of getting Champ credit from offing an ambient, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that is what happened.
Also, if you off a bunneh, you may want to hit your ‘look behind’ key frequently, as at any time there may be an army of furries behind ya ready to fluff-smother you at any moment.
